AIBu to think the school should be letting the chiildren in the school hall at breaking times it's been raining almost everyday for three weeks now and ds came hime the other day and his cost was soaking wet for standing in the rain all day his books were wet we had to put them on the rad Hmm

They have a shelter but it's very small and very open
he loves school and this isssue is making him dread it what happened to wet break ffs

I think in weather such as these they should have a little pity and stop being so tight

Also only year 7 and 8 share brake and luch so it's not even going to be the whole school

Year 7 and 8? Why arent they allowed in their form room?

McHappyPants2012 · 07/05/2012 21:45

Yanbu. Poor kids

CrispyCod · 07/05/2012 21:48

The same happened to me as a child at school, thrown out at break times come rain, hail or snow! We used to try and sneak back in to hug the radiators.

AKMD · 07/05/2012 21:49

YABU, send him with proper waterproofs.

Mrbojangles1 · 07/05/2012 21:50

Sarcalogos his school have a staggered day

So it's year 7&8 then year 9&10 then 11&12
It actually works really well And because their would only two years in the hall at any one time I can't see the issue

I might raise this with the shool govners I just think its really mean they only fault I have with the school really

Need a better coat and bag.

It's character building. Grin

Mrbojangles1 · 07/05/2012 21:52

AKMD he can only go so far as the uniform is very strict

He has a rain coat

But his back pack still gets socked and also his feet,

They don't have lockers in his school and he then has to carry wet things round all day gurr they have cubby holes in each class room

OP posts:
RustyBear · 07/05/2012 21:53

But if break and lunchtimes are staggered, maybe the hall is being used by other year groups at that time?

fluffypillow · 07/05/2012 21:53

YANBU. The Primary school my oldest ds went to used to make the kids go out in the rain, but the 'On duty' Teachers stood inside, and watched them through the window! So cruel.

Aribura · 07/05/2012 21:54

To be honest it is harsh but they'll live as we all did.

Mrbojangles1 · 07/05/2012 21:54

Oh was not help started

That song

If its raining it's raining tears from my eyes :)

Mrbojangles1 · 07/05/2012 21:55

RustyBear but if they just had lunch in the hall why can't they just sit for anther 30 minutes

OP posts:
carols9995 · 07/05/2012 21:56

Yadnbu. They'd soon be chasing it up if the kids went off with colds.

YANBU

We were allowed in our form rooms and the Prefects would keep an eye on us.

My DS2 (year 8) his school do this at lunch and then they work through their afternoon break and finish school 15 minutes early.

TattyDevine · 07/05/2012 21:58

Arghrrr there should be somewhere they can go even if its outdoors but "under cover"...or library or whatever.

In "our day" (different country and private school if that makes a difference) we could go in the "East Wing" which was heated and it were just the corridors but we'd just sit on the floor or whatever, at least we were warm. This was in Oz though where it wasn't cold much (but still got cold). Plus we had the "girls locker rooms" if nothing else, no heating but it was under cover.

And we smoked. That warmed us up.

Mrbojangles1 · 07/05/2012 21:59

I don't think I will be recommending the smoking lol

PandaNot · 07/05/2012 22:06

Tell him to eat more slowly Grin

AKMD · 07/05/2012 22:28

Ah, just get him a poncho that will cover his backpack, waterproof trousers, gaiters, a wide-rimmed hat, wellies and a fishing umbrella. He will be dry and the teachers might get the point that they either need to allow for sensible outdoor clothing in the uniform policy or make alternative arrangements for wet break times.

And make sure you get a photo of him in his playtime outfit :o

startail · 07/05/2012 22:44

UANBU

One of the nicest things about DDs secondary is they are not chased outside at break or lunch, whether it's raining or not.

For DD, who finds making friends a real struggle this is lovely. She can read, do HW go to a club.
Standing in the rain talking to your friends is bad enough, stuck on your own is far worse.

Having to stand in the rain getting your books wet is just downright stupid.

Softlysoftly · 07/05/2012 23:46

Yanbu but he will be fine, we had this at school it made us cunning, we slid past distracted prefects and hid behind curtains in our form room, joined chess club so we could pretend to play at lunch near a radiator. Set us in very good stead for sneaking out to smoke and meet lads in latter years.

Oh, actually....

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 08/05/2012 00:08

Y must be BU. Don't you know that on Mumsnet, schools are NEVER in the wrong?

mockingjay · 08/05/2012 06:12

YANBU. Sure he'll live, but why should he have to put up with it? No way would I want to stand out in the rain, proper rain gear or not.

I'd call the school and ask where the kids can go to stay dry at lunch. Is he sure there isn't somewhere? Seems like most of the kids would just end up sitting in the toilets otherwise!

seeker · 08/05/2012 06:25

This sounds weird. Are you absolutely sure about this? My whinge with schools is usually that at single drop of rain they an't allowed outside!

Why is is "tight" by the way? Are they renting out the form rooms by the hour at lunchtime or something?

oopsi · 08/05/2012 13:52

YANBU.It sounds dreadful!
At my DS's sec ondary school they put a sign up to say 'IN' (have to stay in ) 'OUT' (have to go out) or 'IN/OUT' they can choose. Each form has a room assigned to go to on and a 6th former supervises the Y7-9 forms. The kids just leave their bags in the cloakroom at lunchtime.
