AIBu to think the school should be letting the chiildren in the school hall at breaking times it's been raining almost everyday for three weeks now and ds came hime the other day and his cost was soaking wet for standing in the rain all day his books were wet we had to put them on the rad Hmm

They have a shelter but it's very small and very open
he loves school and this isssue is making him dread it what happened to wet break ffs

I think in weather such as these they should have a little pity and stop being so tight

Also only year 7 and 8 share brake and luch so it's not even going to be the whole school

Are you sure the school are refusing to let them in? Do they not have a form room they can use?

I only ask as DH is a teacher and he is always telling me about daft children choosing to be outside at break in the rain, some of them have no jackets.

Certainly am! What does "tight" mean nowadays, then?

Debsbear · 08/05/2012 15:42

I used to misbehave just so I coud get a lunchtime detention when it was raining! Grin He'll learn!

Most secondaries allow students to use the Library during lunches and breaks...maybe on a wet day he could go in there and get a head start on his homework or something?

There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.

Leather shoes won't let rain in and you can get little waterproof covers that go over backpacks.

madwomanintheattic · 08/05/2012 15:51

hmm. i too appear to be out of touch wiv da kids. assume that these days 'tight' is no longer merely a pecuniary term...

how odd.

i have no particular issue about the rain, tbh. here they get compulsory outdoor play unless it is below -20 (and that is from kindergarten). we dress them accordingly. no-one has yet died, afaik. school is optional below -40 (if you normally walk to school) because of the danger of cold injuries. and occasionally they cancel the buses if they can't get through because of the snow.

kmdwestyorks · 08/05/2012 15:53

even if you get the school to let them in, IME the wetter the weather the more determined my form group used to be to stay out.........A nice warm, dry day and i was tripping up over the beggars!

The school probably has wet weather provisions, every school i worked in has had something in place so it might be worth checking what they are as your son just might not know.

I'd be grateful, our lot have had nothing but wet playtimes (= watch dvds) this term and it's driving them berserk!

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 08/05/2012 16:42

It means 'mean'!

They used to say it in The Royle Family: 'you was dead tight on Antony then, dad'.

Anyway, I think it is a bit crap if they can't go inside. But I'd check this is the case.

OutInAllWeathers · 08/05/2012 16:49

He's not made of sugar right?! IMO (I seem to be in the minority though!) we all need fresh air during the day.

There must be somewhere for him to leave his bag inside though surely?

oopsi · 11/05/2012 07:33

'He's not made of sugar right'
what a ridiculous thing to say! even if he is in the minority of teenagers who will wear a coat, his trousers and shoes will be soaked through. It will be very uncomfortable all afternoon and 'a barrier to learning' I believe they call it!

jamdonut · 11/05/2012 07:42

At my kids school they go in the hall and watch a movie, apparently, if it is raining at lunchtime. No-one is trusted to go to form rooms. :( such a change from when I was at school...we were even trusted to have a kettle and make tea and coffee. My kids were astounded when I told them this!! (1977-83, lol)
