To be annoyed that DS gets hardly any homework in YR 5?

That's it really. Wondering what is a normal workload for yr 5 pupil. He gets 1 piece of literacy homework a week where he has to research something on the Internet without any indication of required length so he's over in 15 minutes. Sometimes he gets a few maths exercises too. Some weeks he gets nada.

This was a few years ago, but it was a good price. We got a wood rather than upvc one, and had their special base (metal girder type things) rather than having to dig foundations. That means that you can put them up yourself rather than paying the extortionate amount for the fitters, it is usually about the same cost for putting it up as it is for buying it in the first place.

I have been really happy with it, negotiated free blinds too!

Would just like to say that my DS is also in year 5 and has had no homework since before Easter. When I questioned this recently his response was "the reason the year 5s aren't getting any homework is because last year the year 6s didn't do very well in their SATs because they weren't prepared enough so this year all the work this term is for year 6 [it's a mixed year 5/6 class]". I was pretty pissed off with that! Not that I think homework per se is necessary but for the school to have a policy of "we'll just more or less ignore one whole year group for several weeks in order that the year 6s - who provide a key performance indicator for our school - can boost the ratings" is really quite shit.

My DS would probably get on really well with yours olimpia, as he really only likes doing activities if a friend is doing the same thing. The only thing he really wants to do on his own is PS3 and like yours, he really only wants to play shooter games. I don't let him play anything with the words "Strong bloody violence" on the warning, but apparently that is, like, SO UNFAIR, because everyone else's mums let them play anything, for hours.

Really though I do think you have to be tough in the face of "there's nothing else to do" and "I'm bored". Of course 10 year old boys just want to play video games. You have to set the boundaries. If he's bored, he's bored! I always say to my DS "well if you're so bored you can clean my car". That usually has him scarpering off to his room and a book.

We have the lean-to type as it was the only one big enough, and we paid extra to have windows in every panel, which is worth it on hot days :)

ooh i like the idea of the metal base, its the doing the foundations that has been putting us off, i didnt even know that was an option! our current one is wooden and has literally rotted throuhg in places, it was on its last legs when we bought the house and it was a make do type thing built by the old couple that lived here, not by a kit or anything a bit of a bodge job tbh, so if we could replace it that would be great!

adn we want the lean to type, i need to measure and see what size!! excited Grin

bogeyface · 09/05/2012 23:36

Yay!!!

Hope you get one, i think every family should have one tbh, but if you have a large family then play rooms should be on prescription :o

bogeyface · 09/05/2012 23:36

Oh, there is a much bigger range in-store afaik, so worth a trip :)

backwardpossom · 09/05/2012 23:44

I love how this has turned into a conservatory thread Grin

bogeyface · 09/05/2012 23:52

:o!

Yes, you dont need homework for your children but you do need a good quality, value for money conservatory!

Finocchio · 11/05/2012 09:06

lol, it's so mumsnet Smile

We don't have a conservatory OR a playroom. We do have a "library" (perfect for doing homework in) and a half-finished "art studio".

CrumpettyTree · 11/05/2012 13:06

We tend to use our ballroom as a playroom when we are not holding balls in it. Wink

bogeyface · 11/05/2012 13:10

YOu must have really big balls Crumpetty, if you need a special room for them Wink
