DP been ill with very high fever for 5 days, vomitting, headache, lerthargic and achey. Has come out in a rash, not raised, have done tumbler test. His temp is up again, rash is red all over his body and from googling looks a little like a german measles rash, his jabs are all up to date. What do I do?????

OOH needed or wait and see how he is in morning.

Apologies for posting here, need quick response

Has he taken some paracetamol or nurofen to get the temp down? What we automatically do for kids we often forget for ourselves.

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 06/05/2012 21:36

I would go to casualty now tbh...no point hangig around and stressing and potentially hm getting worse...can you get to casualty? Your DP is young enough to be a risk for meningitis and I would hate you to be sitting around waiting of OOF when you could be in casualty with doctors and nurses having a look now.

NaughtyElephantsSquirtWater · 06/05/2012 21:39

Am going to hang on for OOH if I can as we don't drive and I would have to go get money out for taxi (15min walk) leaving DP at home alone. 13month DD also would have to be woken and put in taxi etc so going to avoid that option if at all possible.

Its time like this I wish I could drive!!

Has he had regular doses of paracetomol/nurofen to get his temp down?

featherbag · 06/05/2012 21:39

How high a fever is 'high'? Does the rash blanch with the tumbler test? OOH GP or NHS Direct, I would lean more towards OOH GP TBH.

Just to correct an earlier post, if the poster who said NHS 24 can book a hospital visit meant so you don't have to wait in A&E, this is incorrect. It doesn't matter how you get there, all attendees at A&E are seen in order of priority, then order of arrival time. If you meant they can book an appointment with an OOH GP, then sorry!

MumPaula · 06/05/2012 21:40

After 4 days of fever it's not unusual to have a viral rash, both my boys have done that and both times I thought it was the measles even though they had the jabs. I'd call to be sure but don't be surprised if it's just a viral rash caused by whatever infection that he had that caused the fever.

landofsoapandglory · 06/05/2012 21:42

OP if you need money for a taxi, I would go now rather than later, just in case!

madmouse · 06/05/2012 21:43

It could be flu, as in influenza.

NaughtyElephantsSquirtWater · 06/05/2012 21:45

yes has had paracetamol to get temp down.

MumPaula Im hoping that's what it is.

Yes feather it does blanch with tumbler.

Taxi drivers will stop at an atm en route for you to get cash. Or detour to one.

vanimal · 06/05/2012 21:45

Call the taxi, ask them to stop at a cashpoint on the way to a and e.

thebody · 06/05/2012 21:48

Get him in the car or call a taxi and go to casualty u loon!!!

PenelopePipPop · 06/05/2012 21:48

Your poor DP. Sounds rotten. But before you schlep to A&E it is worth doing everything you can get a GP from OOH to spend 5mins on the phone to you checking out the likeliest explanations and hopefully giving you some useful advice on how to make him feel better. I would call OOH back and say you really need urgent advice on whether or not to take him to A&E because he has this rash and you are not sure if it is meningitis. Don't panic because it almost certainly is not (meningitis is rare, you haven't mentioned acute light sensitity or pain when he moves his head which would be warning light symptoms in an adult).

I would guess the most probable explanation is a nasty virus plus viral rash. 5 days of fever is a long time - if he hasn't been taking paracetamol or ibuprofen get him to take some now because it is important to see if the fever responds to anti-inflammatories.

confuzed90 · 06/05/2012 21:50

I hope everything is ok...I would go to a n e ..good luck!

McHappyPants2012 · 06/05/2012 21:53

Has he had those sachets diorite ( not sure of the spelling ) to replace salt ect as he must be getting dyhydrated

scarletforya · 06/05/2012 21:57

Hope he's ok OP.

Might be glandular fever, seems very similar.

Rubygloom · 06/05/2012 22:10

Sounds like mumps.Does he have pain in his throat when swallowing and earache?best to get it checked though

doormat · 06/05/2012 22:15

to be fair none of us can say it is x, y, z unless we are doctors and seen the patient...as it stands it is obvious her dp needs medical attention...hope he is ok op and he recovers fast xxx

youarekidding · 06/05/2012 22:19

noq glad your DS is better. It always amazes me how fast they go down and how quick they come back up!

naughty I would ring OOH back. Tell them about the testicle pain iof you haven't already because that in itself could be the cause or an effect and if you haven't mentioned it already it's a new symptom iyswim?

OOH called back and said it didn't sound too worrying - to monitor it overnight and book an appointment with GP in the morning if it hadn't improved. She also said to call OOH back if he got any worse during the night or if seemed much worse to go to A&E.

Bloody stupid idiot did a "man" thing though and made out he was fine and never got ill etc Angry
I have informed him I will be dragging him to the GPs first thing in the morning. he has gone to bed.

Thanks for all the quick replies Smile

OOH should do video conferencing or accept photos, IMO.

featherbag · 06/05/2012 23:56

Sounds like a sensible plan Naughty, hope your DP feels better in the morning, make sure he takes paracetamol religiously with plenty of fluids, and call OOH back if any new symptoms develop or his current symptoms worsen. Make sure you do yourself a cuppa every time you take him a drink too!

NicNocJnr · 07/05/2012 00:25

Poor you and DP, sounds totally rotten Sad
OOH do home visits, Dh works for OOH service and do many visits for things much less 'necessary' than this.

Viral things can be very nasty and time is what's required. But don't worry about calling OOH back if you get worried again. As it's a BH you may not be able to get to your GPs before they close. Do follow up with the out of hours service if this is the case. Honestly the amount of people they have to deal with calling about hangovers or mild heatstroke after a BH day out itt will make a change to get a 'legitimate' call.

Hope he starts feeling better soon xx

diddl · 07/05/2012 16:04

How did it go, OP-did he go to GP this morning?
