Ok so there is a lady on a course I'm on who has really really strong stale sweaty smell. It's so bad that I'm finding it hard to concentrate. Not a one off unfortunately as she smelt last week too:( How do people not know when they smell? Would I be unreasonable to say something to her and what on earth could I say that wouldn't cause huge offence? Thinking of taking a 'plague type pomander' with me to smiff next week!

It isn't that rare. I suffer from it. I have to keep putting on deoderant, especially when I'm at work. I'm super paranoid about it, and often have to check myself. Since having my dd it's worse for some reason. I would though, rather someone (preferably a friend or family member), told me if I pong.

LoveHandles88 · 04/05/2012 18:30

Hyper hydrosis that is ^ (that I suffer from)

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 04/05/2012 18:36

Thumbwitch I like your style.

Whirliwig72 · 04/05/2012 18:53

Is there also a condition that makes you smell like rotting sprouts? I had a colleague that did and I always wondered what caused it? She was a very proper type and don't think she would have spent the afternoon trumping if she could have prevented it Grin

Botox can help sweaty palms and pits.

TheHappyHissy · 04/05/2012 19:01

OP, I lived in Egypt for 3 years... If the stench of BO bothers you, best to give that country a WIIIIIDDDEEEE berth. The BO there can stun, literally, at 20 yards.

I know some poeple do have medical issues, but in general YANBU.

I'm currently having a coffee before school pick-up, and at the next table are 3 cowboys. Proper, genuine wild west stylee Chilean cowboys, and the main thing I notice is no pong. The horses are a bit further off,, don't know if they stink, but their owners certainly don't.

NovackNGood · 04/05/2012 19:15

Fresh sweat generally only smells off once it has reacted with bacteria that takes time to grow. Washing her body and clothes 'properly' would change the odour.

She may bee eating far too much protein in her diet if he BO has a pee like whiff almost immediately to it in which case she needs to change her diet.

I think I have also seen that pee smelling fresh sweat can be indicative of kidney problems.

LadyWithEDS · 04/05/2012 19:20

I would speak to the course leader now, so that when you next go back, you and the others don't have to suffer again.

I was in a bank once, and behind me the hum appeared, I looked around to see a man who looked like Popeye without the pipe, he stank of stale sweat, piss and goodness knows what else. I got to the counter, after breathing in and out of my mouth, and sublty flaired my nostrils to the lady at the counter and motioned my eyes towards Popeye, he was obviously well known as she nodded and flew around to the main entrance with an airfreshener spraying away. Her colleague greeted Mr xyz without looking at the name on his card so they obviously were used to him. I never smelt anything like it in my life.

I was sat next to a strong smelling well groomed bollocks mantoday in a waiting room, he stank of male bollocks and male hormones very strongly, it is horrible to be trapped by strong bo people.

AKissIsNotAContract · 04/05/2012 19:37

Yuk, I've encountered lots of smelly people in my life, but I've never been able to smell someone's bollocks.

ilovesprouts · 04/05/2012 19:41

my fella sat nxt to a smelly man on the bus last week ,he said he smelt like off poo Shock and a couple of ladys got off the smell was that bad

ZZZenAgain · 04/05/2012 19:42

I'm trying to imagine the smell.

Better not

whiffy armpits etc not pleasant. We had a young woman at work once who wore the same top all week. It was bad. One of the other women had a quiet word with her, I think it had never occured to her to change her top. I am sure she must have washed but then she put on the same thing she'd worn all week and you could definitely smell the lack of freshness

Mrsjay · 04/05/2012 19:43

I ALWAYS ALWAYS get the smelly person on the bus i actually thought i had an aroma about me that they were relating too Grin

ZZZenAgain · 04/05/2012 19:43

I attract more the chain smoker

Mrbojangles1 · 04/05/2012 19:54

Te it when people who work in sops stink I mean why haven't their mangers delt with this

SCOTCHandWRY · 04/05/2012 20:22

For non medical causes of BO..... It's "Antiperspirant-deodorant" not "deodorantI ". Check the packet, deod doesn't stop you sweating. Lots of people don't seem to know the difference - but if there are wet patches under your arms, then you are probably not using Antiperspirant.

And wash your clothes, at 40deg minimum so that bacteria are actually killed. And then dry them properly!

I have a really sensitive nose (I always can detect "off" food, lots of strong smell make me feel sick), and I am amazed at the number of CLEAN people wearing DIRTY clothes - I can smell the clean person underneath, and the musty clothes on top (maybe I was a dog in a previous life?)!

I knew someone who REALLY stank - of fish, it happened over the course of a few days - they had a bacterial infection, and once treated they were no more smelly than anyone else.

Lots of people just don't wash and it's DISGUSTING that I can smell walk past someone and smell shit, piss, semen Shock (oh god it's rank smelling that on someones hand in the street), on the "unwashed" - the sweat is the least of it (did I mention I may have been a dog in a previous life Grin?).

talkingnonsense · 04/05/2012 20:30

Someone in the gym today seemed to have been on the cabbage soup diet- I was hoping everyone knew it wasn't me!

SCOTCHandWRY · 04/05/2012 20:32

AKISSISNOT - sadly I have smelt smelly bollocks, and indeed the equivalent female parts, off unwashed people in shops, walking about etc...... strong enough to make me feel ill :(

I worked with a woman who smelled very very strongly of sanitary bins. It was terrible.

LadyWithEDS · 04/05/2012 20:37

Scotch, do you have sensitive taste buds too? I can smell things before others too. I think it is a hormonal thing with the smelly bollocks. I was married for ten years to my exh, and no smelly bollocks, he had a vesectomy when we were together and no smelly bollocks. One day we were sat near each other waiting to go into a court hearing, and I nearly passed out with the smell of his bollocks, there was no one else sat in the waiting area. I later found out he had, had a reversal, I am glad I don't have to live with that strong wiff when I was with him Grin.

SCOTCHandWRY · 04/05/2012 20:37

LeQeen - same old stale chestnut, indeedy :)

That must be terrible Scotch, I know a lot if people who don't wash daily, you probably wouldn't want to visit my ILs. Now that you mention it, I think my late father must have been like you, he was for ever trying to identify that smell when no-one else could smell anything. He used to go around my flat sniffing only to declare 'Well, it's not in here, must be next door"

SCOTCHandWRY · 04/05/2012 20:40

Lady - YES, taste and smell - DH thinks my talents are wasted and I should be a perfume industry "nose" as I smell the layers of things, taste smells (think that's why the bad smell make me sick!). Not just me then Grin.
