To wonder when the neighbours will give me my parcel?

Been waiting for delivery of an out of stock item.

It came on Monday whilst we were both out so it was delivered to a neighbour. We got back pretty late Monday evening so presumed they'd call over on Tuesday with it.

It's now Thursday and they still have it. YES I know I could have called across for it and will be sending DH for it this evening but I just thought it would be interesting to see how long it would take them to give it to us. In the 2 years we have been living in our house they have never spoken to us, despite our efforts to be nice, friendly and neighbourly. They don't appear to speak to anyone so don't think it's just us.

If I take a parcel for a neighbour I always take it to them - I know I have it, they may not know it's been delivered, card telling them so could have gone astray, not been posted etc. In fact the only reason I know the neighbours have my parcel is because I retrieved the card from the dogs mouth in time!

What do you do if you take a parcel for a neighbour?

We take delivery of parcels for neighbours all the time.

Whatever the delivery person says, I will also drop a note (which includes our phone numbers) through the neighbours' door to say we have their parcel.

That way the neighbour knows we have it and they can come and knock on our door to collect it - or phone us.

Why on earth are you 'waiting' for your neighbour to bring your parcel to you?

HateBeingCantDoUpMyJeans · 03/05/2012 16:57

Sorry yabu it's up to you to go to them, they could have refused to take it in.

gafhyb · 03/05/2012 17:01

well, if all your friends, relatives, workmates etc are like you, like must attract .

Here on MN we have manners

EmmaCate · 03/05/2012 17:02

I wait. If it's it been a week then I keep an eye on their house to see if they're on holiday; once I see signs of life I drop round.

I did this once and the neighbour concerned was incredibly apologetic - turned out they'd received another parcel from the same company and thought the card saying it had been delivered to me was a mistake.

MrsSnow · 03/05/2012 17:03

Do your neighbours moonlight as postal workers?

Surely it is for you to go and collect your parcel and most importantly to say thank you to them.

Bluebell99 · 03/05/2012 17:04

I agree with everyone else but see you have acknowledged yabu :) . However. Whenever I take a parcel in for my neighbours on either side, they hardly ever bother to come to collect, and I usually have to take it round.

gafhyb · 03/05/2012 17:05

Perhaps neighbours have fallen dreadfully ill. How would you feel then eh? eh?

peugotgringo · 03/05/2012 17:05

hmm, I've just spoken to DH asking him to go across for it (he works shifts and is at home at the moment) and he told me he called for it on Tuesday he's obviously not as lazy as me when he knew she was in having just seen her arrive and she ignored the door.

He put the card back through their letter box with his mobile on it saying call me when it's convenient for me to collect the parcel.

He's still waiting!!

a) hang about waiting for a parcel containing something I must want since I ordered it
b) go over and get the parcel and have that thing I wanted

not too difficult, is it now? Don't be daft, scuttle over and get it.

ZZZenAgain · 03/05/2012 17:06

oh I see. You will get it in the end

gafhyb · 03/05/2012 17:07

The plot thickens. Perhaps they have a phone phobia. Perhaps they hate you. Perhaps they can't be arsed to call you because they deeply resent having to take it in the first place (some people don't like taking in parcels if they haven't consented to do this)

SerendipitousHarlot · 03/05/2012 17:09

Nah, I don't believe that second bit, sorry. You just don't want everyone knowing you can't be arsed going to get it.

diedandgonetodevon · 03/05/2012 17:10

ooh, intriguing. Was it something lovely in the parcel? Maybe she's keeping it for herself.

gafhyb · 03/05/2012 17:11

was it a leather pouffe? Perhaps someone shat on it?

ZZZenAgain · 03/05/2012 17:11

do you think she has left it too late then?

KaraStarbuckThrace · 03/05/2012 17:12

Maybe when she got in she needed the loo and that is where she was when your DH knocked Hmm

Just go around and get it will you. She may have small children that she doesn't want to leave alone just to drop off YOUR parcel.

peugotgringo · 03/05/2012 17:13

They appear to hate everyone on our street gafhyb and to be honest now i've started this thread and thought about it all a bit more I'm truly surprised they did take it in for us.

OP posts:
ZZZenAgain · 03/05/2012 17:14

are they in the phone book? Call and ask if you can come round at 8pm tonight or whenever it suits.

Merrylegs · 03/05/2012 17:17

Perhaps she had just got in and was busting for the loo and he knocked at the wrong time.

Also, lots of people don't like ringing mobile numbers.

Are you at home? Go and get it now!

Blimey, you'll be able to dine out on this adventure for years.

Merrylegs · 03/05/2012 17:18

(x post loo theory!)

BBQJuly · 03/05/2012 17:18

Phone the delivery company and tell them you are unable to retrieve your goods.

KatieMiddleton · 03/05/2012 17:18

Seriously? Get off your backside and go and get it yourself!

peugotgringo · 03/05/2012 17:19

harlot - you already know i'm (in mumsnet eyes) a lazy arse, so why the hell would i bother to make something up? I'm not that bloody creative for a start!

starbuck - he thought she might be on the loo, hence why he left his number

No babies or small children - no kids in the house at all at the time, her daughter was down the street playing.

And nothing particularly exciting in said parcel.

SerendipitousHarlot · 03/05/2012 17:19

Just go and knock! If she ignores you and she knows you're there, then you can get your knickers in a twist.

alwaystheblacksheep · 03/05/2012 17:19

I usually take it round but don't expect that of my neighbours.
