Should I email ASDA about "especially for mums" twatishness

AvocadoAndFitch · 01/05/2012 11:26

ASDA junk mail came through the post. Normally I ignore it but today it has a red love heart on it with especially for mums written inside the heart [yuck]

So I read it, apparently P&T spaces, ASDA deliveries, baby changing/feeding facilities, free cafe baby food and bag packing are all "especially for mums"

No they bloody aren't, most are for anyone with a baby/child and the others are for all customers. Don't start pretending you treat "mums" any different.

I was going to email to say, stop trying to exclude fathers/grandparents etc and pretending being a mum makes you entitled to anything special over and above other customers.

But then I realised I am hormonal, bored, tired and avoiding the gym so may be getting on my high horse about nothing.

Should I email or get my arse off to the gym?

yabu
mainly mums use those things
do you really care that much?

Debsbear · 01/05/2012 11:28

Oh go for it, it's got to be better than going to the gym! Grin

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 01/05/2012 11:30

I'd email them, they'll probably send you some vouchers Grin.

Siddhartha · 01/05/2012 11:31

Yes! asda are horrible horrible

do they think people still fall for that?

and while you're at it - send a copy to Proctor and Gamble "Proud sponsors of Mums"...wtf?

BaronessBomburst · 01/05/2012 11:32

I'd email them. It'll make you feel better and they won't care.

WyrdMother · 01/05/2012 11:32

Perfectly justified reaction, there's nothing wrong with them providing adequate facilities for coping with shopping with children but they're not "especially for mums" .

OatcakeCravings · 01/05/2012 12:36

Do you people actually have time to care about this Grin

Anypointinseeingdoc · 01/05/2012 12:42

Email them and then post the response here. I get in a murderous rage jolly irritated when I see things like this but I can never be bothered to do anything about it.

Bluegrass · 01/05/2012 12:43

If they sent out a flyer saying that they had new lounge areas with coffee, games consoles and big tv's "especially for dads" you would think "fuck off, why exclude me and what are the mums supposed to be doing".

This sort of stuff just reinforces the idea that child care (and shopping) is women's work which isn't helpful for anyone.

Tokamak · 01/05/2012 12:44

This exactly.

LimeMilkshakeForAlbertoFrog · 01/05/2012 12:44

You're not wrong about being bored, are you. Grin

Flisspaps · 01/05/2012 12:47

Yes, email!

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 01/05/2012 12:52

Gets on my tits as well and completely misdirected since its DH who takes both kids shopping.

I'll have to remind him not to change DD while he's at ASDA though as the facilities are especially for Mums.

and yy to whoever mentioned the Proctor and Gamble patronising bullshit advertising campaign. Sponsor Mums indeed.

Really P&G? How do you do that? Pay female employees well, Give good parental leave or just make branded cleaning products? I think we know the answer to that.

Goolash · 01/05/2012 12:52

yanbu

FreudianSlipper · 01/05/2012 12:59

Waitrose have started this rubbish too

yesterday i was able to buy 2 fairy washing tablets for £6 you know to help mums out Hmm wtf

HipHopOpotomus · 01/05/2012 13:03

yes and please tell Procter and Gamble to fuck the fuck off while you are at it ("proud sponsors of Mums" - do fuck off P&G, you are nowt to do with me)

Just saw something similar in Sainsburys too (can't recall what though - I deliberately look the other way :))

NoraHelmer · 01/05/2012 13:03

Yabu. Junk mail goes straight from the doormat to the recycling box without being read.

Anypointinseeingdoc · 01/05/2012 13:04

Not Waitrose too! I am already looking up lists of P&G products so I can avoid them because the adverts make me want to scratch my own eyes out.

Surely Waitrose's target market have housekeepers to deal with things like dishwashers and laundry?

bettybat · 01/05/2012 13:11

Yes, do it.

And while you're at it, send out a blanket email to any sex-enforced specific product company that is a "proud sponsor of mums" (*vomit), and any product company that insists on making adverts that a) make the mother the know it all in cleaning/food shopping and b) make the father ridiculously hopeless at basic household tasks.

FreudianSlipper · 01/05/2012 13:14

had to give mine the day off as she has come down with scurvy

now i am wondering if it was part of a products adversiting that i spotted, i did get all tutty

MsVestibule · 01/05/2012 13:27

For those sneering at the OP and asking if she's not got anything better to do, please desist. That's the politest way I can put it Hmm.

As said up thread, this does just perpetuate the stereotype that childcare and shopping is the "Mum's" responsibility. As a feminist and SAHM (proud to be both), it's offensive. Surely the marketing department can do better than this dross.

loobeylou2012 · 01/05/2012 13:29

I've geen trying to avoide P and G too; Then it occured to me that they make one of my prefered perfumes and also the sanitary towels I like. Must admit I gave it up rather sharpish after that... Wink HATE all of those targeted "mum" things though, if I could avoid them all I would!

startail · 01/05/2012 13:43

All this Mum's are martyred heros stuff, really gets on my nerves.

All the supermarkets do it. Their free-be mags are vomit inducing.

I especially hate it because it constantly reinforces the idea to the my DDs and other peoples DCs of both sexes that all child care is women's work. Constantly seeing the word MUM next to nappies and on magazines full of recipes along side perfect smiling DCs must reinforce stereotypes.

Species8472 · 01/05/2012 14:34

Asda's own-brand bog roll has a 'voted best by mums' thing on it - what, only mums wipe arses then? Just bizarre.

istanbulconstantinople · 01/05/2012 15:00

For those sneering at the OP and asking if she's not got anything better to do, please desist.

Been on Mumsnet long, have you? Grin
