I know she's being unreasonable but I kind of see her point ... what would you do?

DD1 (age 13) has a face like a cross between a slapped arse and a wet month of Sundays.

She does athletics. She's always in the school squad.

Except not this time.

Because we were at a funeral on the day of the try-outs (Thursday) and there's no exceptions the team is picked.

But it's not her fault she wasn't sick, or dodging practice, it was a genuine family funeral.

She's saying she's fine, but she's not really.

WWYD?

So far I've tried to be sympathetic but I'm losing patience, and at the end of the day I do think the school are being a bit harsh. But I've not told her that lol.

Thank fuck for a teacher with a bit of compassion and some common sense!

So glad it worked out op.

Thumbwitch · 02/05/2012 10:58

Oh hurrah! I am also glad that it worked out for her. And a bit peeved that her form tutor was so "suck it up" instead of "go and have a word to the PE teacher" about it.

hathorkicksass · 02/05/2012 11:00

Form tutor is about as much use as a chocolate chastity belt ...

It's a GRRRRRRR but a learning experience too. Secondary school is like this. We have had the same with DS re claskes of commitments (even within school with different departments- why oh why can they NOT hold a concert on the day of a crucial rugby match for senior team selection etc etc).

Ultimately you and your DD made a (correct IMHO) choice to prioritise family. THere are going to be a lot of similar hard choices in life and it's OK to be sad/grumpy about the bits that can't have an easy solution.

Like the idea of out of school athletics too- but be are there eill be more conflicts with this too!

hathorkicksass · 02/05/2012 11:04

Oh we've had netball and hockey matches on at the same time.

She's in both A squads ....

Personally I think school are being absolutely vile and I would tell them so!

It's not the way to treat a pupil who always turns up and works hard.

Sarcalogos · 02/05/2012 13:55

That's great, so just one idiot at school (form tutor) and not the whole lot of them being crazy! A victory for the PE department. chokes as thinks that's the first time in my life I've held a positive opinion of a PE teacher

imnotmymum · 02/05/2012 13:58

I do not think anyone is being unreasonable. Poor kid, poor you, poor school for missing out on a top athlete.

hathorkicksass · 02/05/2012 13:58

Yip basically she spoke to form tutor who said tough - and DD decided to leave it and not take it any further she's obviously not as stroppy as her mother

And the PE teacher passed her in the corridor and said "DD1 stop right there. Why weren't you at athletics?"

That's fantastic news! Very pleased for your daughter :)

startail · 02/05/2012 14:00

Grin sorry, much easier to scan the thread on the PC with the OP highlighted, glad PE are nice and sensible.

hathorkicksass · 02/05/2012 14:02

Yes, I can say it's the first time in my life too that a PE teacher is in my good books Grin

Although the cynical bit of me says it's only because they want to win Wink

Oh just read update !! hurray for common sense good luck to her!

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 03/05/2012 00:25

Great news for DD.

Don't think about the PE teachers motivation too hard!! Grin

Form teacher is a prat.. it's something DD needs to think about/be told... asking the right person (ie the organ grinder and not the monkey Grin) not the nearest person!

verytellytubby · 03/05/2012 08:18

Thank good for common sense Grin

scrablet · 03/05/2012 13:13
