I have stolen the neighbour's cat.

About three years ago a little tortie cat appeared and started trying to get into the house. She would get through open windows and sometimes pounce on us in the night. Occasionally we would return and find she had been in the house all day having snuck in the front door without is noticing.
At first I wasn't sure where she was from and she was scrawny. She was also riddled with fleas so I thought she might be a stray. We didn't actively encourage her by feeding her but we didn't spray her with water or anything.

Anyway as time went on she was spending more time sat outside the house and our bedroom window crying to come in. At the time I was heavily pregnant and on mat leave so was in a lot. In the end I flea treated her primarily because I did not want my house infested with fleas and also because she was twitching and scratching. I also wormed her and at this point we started to feed her.

Subsequently I found out from a neighbour where her owners lived. Apparently they had several cats and two big dogs which is maybe why 'my' cat moved out? Since she first started appearing she has now pretty well moved in, when we go on holiday my mum comes over twice a day and feeds her and the cat now has a cat flap Blush.

My problem is that her owner's have split up and the house has now been sold. Do you think I should go round and speak to them or offer some money for their cat? I've kind of been at some weird halfway house with her the last couple of years where she isn't really mine yet appears to live here! I actually don't think she has been back to her owner's house for over a year.
Or should I just leave it? I'm fairly sure they know she has moved in with us and they've never said anything.

I am an awful cat stealing person. I never even wanted a cat.

You saved her from a horrible life, don't give them the chance to take her back.

My aunt and uncle found out they had a six dinner Sid on their hands after they neutered and vaccinated him. First time he was let out he came back with collar and name tag. Turned out he had about four sets of "owners".

ChristmasFluff · 29/07/2017 20:24

Keep quiet. NOT frowned upon - if her 'owner' cared, they'd have said something to you by now. I remember when the neighbour's cat moved in with us, and I went over with him in my arms after a week or so and said, 'I thought you might want to know your cat has moved in....' and the bloke said, 'you're not expecting us to take him back are you?' They know where they are welcome. I have a wanderer who goes in various houses, but he comes home every night. That's their home.

ChristmasFluff · 29/07/2017 20:24

Oh, and I also had a cat who moved out and lived down the road. No hard feelings. They know what they like.

Cats are intelligent creatures and chose a better life if one presents itself to them. Why not - I would want to move away from a flea infested home filled with lots of animals!

She has a cat flap, if she changed her mind she wouldn't have chosen to stay with you Smile

You must of had a fleainfestedhome 😂

Daydream007 · 29/07/2017 22:28

The previous 'owners' clearly didn't look after her very well if she was scrawny and riddled with fleas. She found you for a reason, keep looking after her she has never known it so good!

THIS IS A ZOMBIE THREAD!!!!

Talk to the owners.
My cat ended up quite ill because two of the neighbours on my road decided to encourage her into their houses and feed her (terrible) food. Her coat became dull and greasy and she was listless. Because she is super active/healthy but very old (18) she has been mistaken for a younger, neglected animal, but this is definately not the case! We've explained this to neighbours and they now leave her alone and she's back to her shiny coated, happy self again.
No one meant any harm - really they thought they were helping - but these incidents caused much stress to my cat and me.
Though if the cat really has been neglected/owners don't care they'll say you can keep her, guilt free?

This is a difficult one as both a cat owner and animal rescuer too. I have 2 cats one is 16 and has renal failure so is very skinny ( if I saw her in the street I may think she's been starved) she eats like a horse but vet said she is old and will not be her best weight with her medical problems too. I also have a very handsome, castrated Siamese cat who is still a very friendly, sociable boy with the lady cats. He will visit my neighbours and being a large, active boy will never refuse food ( Dreamiest are his guilty pleasure) but my neighbours will fuss him and give him the odd treat or three and he'll sun himself and come home intermittently throughout the day IF a new neighbour moved in I would be devastated to think that they'd see my boys visit as he's unhappy at home, not wanted or he'd 'chosen them' without at least enquiring with us. He could have a medical issue that the 'finders' would not be aware of and if he was a female cat the 'finders' would not know if the cat had been spayed so may end up with a litter of kittens they don't want. The cat you have found could have got fleas from sleeping in a shed .... all may not be as it seems.

We've got a little tortie just like that! Neighbour's cat, but spends most of her time in our garden with our 2 cats. She'll sneak in if a window or door is open and I must confess, I have let her in a few times when the weather has been awful. She shelters on our windowsill getting soaked and I feel sorry for her that she thinks that's a better option than going to her proper home! She's not flea infested thankfully but is a tiny little thing and eats anything she can get. I don't want to take her away from her real owners, but I really don't think they care! They had an old tom cat who would go wandering and some friends in the next village took him in and got him done, thinking he was a stray. It was over a year before the neighbours started looking for him! They took him back, but when we moved in he would come round all the time. He was lovely, just like Mog from the children's books. Then one day he disappeared, never to be seen again. He was old, so guess he died, but I always wonder if someone else took him in. Our neighbours have dogs as well, and I just don't think the cats are too keen on them.
Sorry, really long post, but you're not alone. It is hard, because you don't want to 'steal' other people's cats, but you don't want them to be neglected either.
