Do have dyed my hair red?

I've blonde all my life, naturally when i was little, but increasingly with the help of chemicals. I've thought about going red lots of times. I went to the hairdressers this afternoon, I'd had a really bad morning with DD, and was getting annoyed with DH's parenting interference well-meaning support. Something just flipped when I got to the hairdressers, and asked her to colour my hair red. I love it, I think I look younger and it doesn't drown my skin out as much. Got home and DH hates it, apparently he's always hated this colour, although never mentioned it in previous discussions. He's sort of muttered "well. if you like it....." but has now gone off sulking.

AIBU to stick with the red? Should I be back at the hairdresser trying to get it toned down?

It is a perm colour, she tried with semi perm, but it didn't take properly. I'm happy to get it cut down to jaw length to help get risk of the colour when i want a change back

It'll probably be fine to get of tbh, if you had it done at the hairdressers and have only had it done once so far. I did mine myself, always left it on longer than it said and redid it every 8 weeks or so!

I loved being red and the only reason I am not now is because my favourite shade isnt flattering on anyone over 35 (well 30 if I am honest....:o)

SamuelWestsMistress · 29/04/2012 07:53

No way AYBU! Red hair is fantastic. My hair is red.

It is a bitch to maintain though because it washes our dead quick. If you can try to cut down this much you wash it and get some dry shampoo. I have to wash mine every day so I've had to start dying it myself every 3 weeks.

It's the most glorious thing when it's freshly done though! My DH prefers tamer colours I think but he's used to it now!

theonewiththenoisychild · 29/04/2012 08:09

My dp thinks red hair is sexy he would like me to dye it red again he hints regularly about it. YANBU its your choice what you do with your hair.

babyicebean · 29/04/2012 08:56

I am the only one in my family NOT to have had red or tones of red hair, my brother hates his while I hate my natural mousy hair.I have been dyeing it since I can remember.I have benn blue, green, purple, combinations of colours. For the last twoish years it has been RED.The upkeep is easier the longer I have been doing it as I wash it in the week as little as I can get away with and usually on a sunday once a month I reapply the dye.

The hubby has a thing for red heads and he will happily do the dying.

FartBlossom · 29/04/2012 09:04

I have red hair and its great. I do it myself at home with This

I love it. Ive often wanted to go different colours like blue, purple etc, but dont have the guts to do that.

FartBlossom · 29/04/2012 09:05

Oh god Im 33, so my hair looks shite does it :(

TattyDevine · 29/04/2012 09:06

If its that ginger colour of the benidorm wig (sort of a combination of gold and copper in equal parts) then it will be easy enough to get rid of if you want to at some point in the future - yes, it will fade a fair bit but actually copper and gold tones are much easier to cover with brown, which you can then highlight back to blonde, than actual red tones or mahogany tones etc.

So, this kind of colour easy enough to cover later, this kind of colour not so much.

FartBlossom · 29/04/2012 09:09

Just reading about getting rid of red hair. Ive been red a few times in my life and never had a problem changing my hair colour.

The first time I wanted to go blonde so I popped to the hairdressers who sorted it. OK so it was highlighted with bleach and it was a range of colours from dark red, to light blonde with a few bits of ginger strawberry blonde, but it looked really good.

The second time I dyed it black as I fancied black hair at the time.

If I wanted to change now Id probably dye it brown and just do that every 6 weeks or so. Its never been a problem to me TBH.

VikingVagine · 29/04/2012 10:00

I really want to do mine red too (even have a box of dye) but DH said I'm not 15 and it wouldn't be appropriate.

Red2011 · 29/04/2012 10:13

You've reminded me that mine is in need of a recolour. No prizes for guessing what colour though!

FartBlossom · 29/04/2012 10:36

I refuse to believe at 33 Im too old to have red hair just yet

AutumnSummers · 29/04/2012 11:04

I have the same colour of hair. I love it! But I wouldfn't expect my Husband to love it because I do. He does, but if he didn't I wouldn't change it just because he didn't like it. Especially not if he sulked!

Red2011 · 29/04/2012 11:12

Oops...over 35 too old for red hair? That's me buggered then! Smile

FartBlossom · 29/04/2012 11:43

Red I will be red for some time to come yet as it is my favourite colour of hair for me so bugger all those people that think Im too old for red hair Grin

PurpleRomanesco · 29/04/2012 13:18

VikingVagine, Tell your DH that you are indeed not 15 and therefore do not need anyones permission to dye your hair whatever colour you like.

Rollersara · 29/04/2012 13:31

I am just Envy, my hair is very dark and whenever I've tried red it's never really worked tries to wipe out memories of the bleached orange overdyed by purple episode. It's currently deep red black which is as close as I can get! Always wanted pillarbox red though.

ChaoticismyLife · 29/04/2012 13:47

"I loved being red and the only reason I am not now is because my favourite shade isnt flattering on anyone over 35 (well 30 if I am honest)"

When this poster said this, I assumed she meant her favourite shade of red rather than red itself.

I used to dye my hair various shades of red when I was younger. Then I started dying it medium/dark brown and due to the build up over the years when I dyed it myself red it only seemed to take at the roots. I did get it done at the hairdressers but I couldn't afford the upkeep, as you could see the roots after 3/4 weeks.

FartBlossom · 29/04/2012 14:39

You're right chaotic Though there does seem to be some opinion that red is not for the grown up settled down person.

Piggychunk · 29/04/2012 14:57

I spent a lot of money recently going from red to blonde. I hated it. It washed me out and really aged. So I went back to my copper/auburn colour and feel so much better. I am very pale and feel it looks more natural on me. What colour skin tone do you have? . If its on the pale side I bet that is why it suits you better

bogeyface · 29/04/2012 15:46

I AM NOT SAYING ANYONE IS TOO OLD!!!!

Just that the shade that suits me best is very "young", the sort of thing a uni student would have and tone down when they want to get a job :o

bogeyface · 29/04/2012 15:47

I am Countess btw! did a name change on another thread.

And chaotic is 100% right, thats exactly what I meant.

FartBlossom · 29/04/2012 15:59

Ok no need to shout Grin My hair is bright red though, not copper or auburn, but red. It was also the 15 years old comment that made me feeling a bit too old to be having red hair. I just dont want to grow older gracefully without people thinking Im trying to be something Im not ie someone in their teens/early 20's.

Sorry to make you thought I misunderstood, I knew you meant the shade and mine is a shade similar to what I think you might have just described.

lobsters · 29/04/2012 16:44

tatty it's probably nearer the second shade you've put up.

Viking DH did say I looked like a teenager with a bad dye job. oops. But now he's decided it's actually the fringe he doesn't look.

I think he's worried I'm having a mid life crisis, I probably am, but this is about as wild as it's going to get. I'm upgrading my car soon, but I'm so wild I'm getting a Volvo.

And I'm 36, so far too old for all of this nonsense, but I've been old before my time for too long

bogeyface - I have student colour red as I am a student (albeit a mature - at least in years- one). TBH I would not tone it down for a job. If they can't get past that, then they're not worth working for.
Though saying that, the type of field I want to work in are not likely to be phased by hair style/colour anyway.
