Im from the uk but have recently moved to Brisbane. I was pleased to find they have mothercare over here but shocked to find they are selling gollie dolls. I thought they stopped doing these years ago.

Blimey - I thought you were going to say something utterly shocking like a helpful staff member!!

You can still buy Gollies in the UK too.

Lehman · 28/04/2012 14:47

God no...that would make the evening news here...they are just as useless ...but very few places here for baby stuff so stuck with them. I hope I'm not just being pc but I think those dolls are awful and wouldn't expect mother are to sell them or any mainstream shop.

Dont buy them then??

Loads of stuff in Tesco I find weird (not shocking) to have on sale.

Like Frankie Boyle's autobiography.

McPhee · 28/04/2012 14:57

I've got a gollie - it's just a doll in my eyes.

Who on earth is frankie Boyle? I remember the jam, I think it was robinsons but they stopped doing that collect the token thing.

I cant be the only one who finds them offensive?!

SunflowersSmile · 28/04/2012 15:26

I doubt very much that mothercare in the UK would sell them. I am a bit shocked actually.

lolajane2009 · 28/04/2012 15:38

charlie bears do gollies in the uk alongside their dollies. dont see the issue. i find some of the girls clothing sold in various places more shocking tbh.

hairylemon · 28/04/2012 15:38

I dont find them offensive, Ive never had one because I just didnt like how they looked but my Nana had a few bits of golly things

WorraLiberty · 28/04/2012 15:43

I love gollies, they remind me of my childhood too.

Having said that, there are loads on sale around here in various high street shops and markets.

quoteunquote · 28/04/2012 15:46

How lovely, racism alive and happening in Oz who knew(sarcasm off)

I can't stand racists, just so unnecessary,

when will people give up this nastiness it causes so much unhappiness.

ask anyone who has spent a childhood being called golliewog, and it doesn't stop when you get to adulthood.

how anyone can embrace them when they are used to inflict so much misery, is beyond me,

but bullies often like to pretend that they mean no harm and all in a bit of fun, but sad pathetic people like to put people down as it the only way they can feel superior ,in reality anyone who thinks golliewogs are a good thing are lower than a dog turd.

CleopatrasAsp · 28/04/2012 15:49

I think their offensive too OP, you aren't the only one.

I'm astonished that they are still sold - but utterly astonished that anyone would want to buy them. Why would anyone want an object like that in their home? They're racist parodies of actual human beings, their intent is to mock and humiliate.

WorraLiberty · 28/04/2012 15:52

The irony of that post has just given me a huge, full on belly laugh quote

Thank you so much, I needed that Grin Grin Grin

Conflugenglugen · 28/04/2012 15:53

I find golliwogs offensive. I'm surprised how many posters on here don't.

LentillyFart · 28/04/2012 15:53

Very poor OP. Formulaic and strikingly unoriginal. Oh - and Friday night is bunfight night. Try again and try harder. 1/10

Why would you live in Brisbane though?

SunflowersSmile · 28/04/2012 16:18

Is Brisbane a 'problem' are then TattyDevine?

Alinta · 28/04/2012 16:19

My daughter was given a Maori doll. Is that considered racist?

ginmakesitallok · 28/04/2012 16:21

I once posted on here about what to do with a gollie which MIL gave DD2 - the resounding response was to bin it. Funny how different threads go.... (Oh and I binned it - I find them offensive)

SunflowersSmile · 28/04/2012 16:24

I am surprised at the way this thread has gone so far. I would expect uproar if Mothercare/ Tesco or the like started selling Gollies. Think about the full name of these dolls. I am not even going to type it.

Aribura · 28/04/2012 17:00

Some people are so preoccupied being offended on other people's behalf to the point where they desperately need to get a fucking life.

PS) Being in an interracial relationship, I do care about racism but find outrage of it best reserved for shit that actually matters.

ApocalypseThen · 28/04/2012 17:05

You think you're the only person in an interracial relationship? You think no-one posting here is part of a minority? And you think you get to decide what matters?
