Ysl nail varnish lasts ages.

But I've given up and get gel varnished at the salon every two weeks now and it almost never chips.

ENormaSnob · 27/04/2012 21:13

yabu

IMO chanel = shit

nails inc = shit

OPI = pretty good

DaisyMaisyJessicaEmily · 27/04/2012 21:15

Rimmel 10 day one isn't bad although doesn't last anywhere near 10 days. I prefer nailfinity by Max Factor

r3dh3d · 27/04/2012 21:26

Yabu. Base coat, any-old-thing, decent top coat. Sorted.

Fwiw, I generally go with Rimmel for the any-old-thing because if you are putting that many layers on, it helps to use something that dries fast, and their 60 secs stuff probably takes more than 60secs but is genuinely quite quick.

I tend to take a few days to do it properly - I'll do base coat one night, colour the next, another coat of colour the next, top coat finally - but if you do put a fair coat on each time and let it dry completely it lasts ages. My current pedi went on in mid March, and hasn't chipped yet, a month is pretty average.

I'll tell you a wee secret. My friend's mum works in a nail varnish factory, the same factory and same machines make Marks & Spencer, cheap nameless brands and Nails Inc, generally to the same formula. They will soon be making L'Oreal.

Biosculpture gel nails are the way to go.

Tucktalking · 27/12/2012 21:08

cheap nail varnish of all types and brands and colours is available for much lesser online on fragrance direct. I ordered about 7 different colours and it cost me just £7. some of the bottles were just 50p each, collection 2000. sally hansen hard as nails is a good brand for me. I however just try to top it up with a clear coat after every 2 days.

BinksToEnlightenment · 27/12/2012 21:17

I love the term false economy. No one has ever said anything unreasonable that included the words false economy.

Although I do hear told that nail varnish that doesn't chip easily isn't good for your nails.

Buuut we'll all grow new ones, right?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/12/2012 21:22

Well, I think the best nail varnish that I've tried - for coverage and durability - are from George (Seahorse, is lovely) and any of the Max Factor little dinky bottle range (Violet Diva is my alltime fave). I've tried Estee Lauder and Dior and they're not worth the money.

meditrina · 27/12/2012 21:24

I've always used cheap varnish (obscure brands, often from market stalls), and I've found from chatting to friends that mine lasts better than expensive ones. Remember you are paying for the brand, and packaging, not a better product.

The thing that is most likely to make a difference to durability is attention to application, and not using your nails as a tool kit.

trixymalixy · 27/12/2012 21:29

YANBU. I bought Essie nail polish for the first time recently and it has been a revelation. No more cheap crap nail polish for me.

ravenAK · 27/12/2012 21:30

Barry M are good. Illamasqua are brilliant! (but not the cheapest). I also like Miss Sporty & Rimmel.

Agree you can get away with any cheap brand if you use a good topcoat.

Dandelion75 · 27/12/2012 21:33

If you don't want cheap nail varnish, maybe invest in this?

EllenParsons · 27/12/2012 21:49

Out of the cheap brands I find maybelline is really good. It dries quicker than most and doesn't chip as quickly. Also like OPI from the mid range brands.

EmmaBemma · 27/12/2012 21:55

I read threads like these, and wonder if I'm missing a vital section of chromosome. Is just greek to me. I paint my toenails in summer so they look pretty with my flip-flops but that's it.

LynetteScavo · 27/12/2012 21:57

I think nail varnish is one of the few things where you don't get what you pay for.

Expensive varnish is no better than cheep varnish.

BinksToEnlightenment · 27/12/2012 21:58

Shitting hell, dandelion!!

Not in stock! I can't believe they sold one!!

Dandelion75 · 27/12/2012 21:58

Extra fiver for delivery too binks Grin

BinksToEnlightenment · 27/12/2012 22:02

Five pounds delivery?

Ooh my, you wouldn't trust Yodel with that would you! I'd want the director of Selfridges to deliver it to me while dressed all in black in the dead of night!

BOFingSanta · 27/12/2012 22:02

I can't see a price on that- how much is it?

Remotecontrolduck · 27/12/2012 22:04

BOF, only £160,000.00.............

No words really Xmas Shock

BOFingSanta · 27/12/2012 22:06

Blimey! It's only got diamond dust in it- you can buy it bags to mix with paint, FFS! And what's the point in decorating the lid with diamonds? It isn't jewellery Xmas Confused.

Merryouchmas · 27/12/2012 22:08

Another Barry M fan here

BinksToEnlightenment · 27/12/2012 22:18

I wonder if they'd have change for £200,000?

trixymalixy · 27/12/2012 22:29

Low stock, clearly there are at least a couple of people with more money than sense!

Glossynotflossy · 27/12/2012 22:32

I like 2 True nail varnishes and love the Chanel colours.

TK Maxx seem to be getting loads of nail polish in lately. Top brands like Essie etc can sometimes be found.
