To not understand the term "Meh"

boringnickname · 27/04/2012 15:03

what does it mean? is it just a general expression of disdain? or sort of like "D'oh" Do not know when it is appropriate to use either and consequently whether it is appropriate when folks "say" it to me. I have never actually heard anyone say it - just on face book or on here. My DD went through a phase of using it (shes 21).

Kladdkaka · 27/04/2012 15:04

It's a written shrug.

Kladdkaka · 27/04/2012 15:05

Like 'whatever' but without the aggro undertones.

Solo · 27/04/2012 15:05

No idea! but my 13yo Ds uses it and I hate it...I'm a bit of a stickler for good English though, so he gets the Hmm look from me!

boringnickname · 27/04/2012 15:06

i was just about to post, like "whatever"?? Grin So it means "i dunno" or "i don't care"?

OP posts:
boringnickname · 27/04/2012 15:07

My DD has used it to sort of say "eewwww" i think. I don't like it because i just don't think it would sound nice Hmm

That's interesting

I've only ever seen it written too but never heard it being said

I hadn't realised that til now

Kladdkaka · 27/04/2012 15:10

I use it when my husband asks me something and I can't be bothered to given any sort of coherant answer whatsoever. :o

Psammead · 27/04/2012 15:12

It means 'I have heard and understood what you have communicated to me, and in the nicest possible way, I couldn't give the smallest of shits'.

catseverywhere · 27/04/2012 15:12

Kladdkaka explains it exactly like my DD says it. There's no aggression, it's just a 'whatever', or even 'you think that if you like, I don't, but never mind', or even a bit of boredom on the part of the 'meh'er :o

valiumredhead · 27/04/2012 15:24

It's a shrug.

slug · 27/04/2012 15:57

It's a verbal shrug.

foosty · 27/04/2012 16:01

they all say it on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm', at least that's where I first heard it a few years back

Chilenachica · 27/04/2012 16:31

My DDs, especially DD1, say it. Seems to mean just about anything depending on the context, as far as I can make out from the various facial exressions. They even use it in Spanish conversation, which sounds really oddConfused

usualsuspect · 27/04/2012 16:35

meh means indifference, to be used when you just don't not care

usualsuspect · 27/04/2012 16:35

stray not there

mythical · 27/04/2012 16:35

i only use it in writing..for example
"how was your day?"
"meh, nothing much happened.."

MMMarmite · 27/04/2012 18:08

Yeah, it

shows un-enthusiam ("D'you wanna go to the cinema?" "Meh" = I'm not really bothered)

or not caring one way or the other ("What do you want for dinner?" "Meh.")

or unexcitement about something ("I can't believe he did that, isn't it awful?" "Meh.")

or it can be an adjective that means so-so : ("How was school?" "Meh." "How's it going?" "Meh"?)

Unlike "whatever", or "I don't care", it's not rude or aggressive - you'd use it in the middle of a conversation to a friend without them taking offense.

ninah · 27/04/2012 18:10

it's goatspeak

Mrsjay · 27/04/2012 18:12

its a written noise its when you are not fussed about something you say meh and i love it and wil use it even if i sound like a goat MEH Grin

usualsuspect · 27/04/2012 18:30

Sometimes 'meh' is the only answer.

AutumnSummers · 27/04/2012 18:59

What Usual said.

Ninah That is Goatist!

boringnickname · 27/04/2012 19:39

MrsJay am i to assume by your post the pronunciation is more of a "Meeeeehhhh" than very quick and dismissive "meh"?

OP posts:
throckenholt · 27/04/2012 19:43

I think it is used to mean a shrug - but I personally think of it more as turning your nose up a bit, not too keen on something.

LynetteScavo · 27/04/2012 19:45

It's a shrug/ whatever in Jewish (I think)
