AMBU not to tip the Domino Pizza delivery guy?

Mummywheel · 25/04/2012 19:42

As a special request by my DS we ordered pizza for a treat. We waited 50 mins for it to arrive. For this reason I didn't give a tip. I partly feel guilty but surely tips are for good service are they not?

YANBU, I usually tip but have never had to wait 50mins.

AgentZigzag · 25/04/2012 19:44

It's up to you whether you tip or not.

I thought that was the point.

CallMeAl · 25/04/2012 19:44

Well yes, but I doubt it was the drivers fault it took that long.

I drove for Dominos for a while. They don't pay you properly and hardly anyone tips for pizza like they do for chinese.

Birdsgottafly · 25/04/2012 19:46

I wouldn't hold the delivery person as being responsible for the delivery time, so i would have tipped.

Companies such as Donimo's are good at giving vouchers if you email them complaints, instead.

aquafunf · 25/04/2012 19:47

tip?

phone them and have a moan- you will probably have a free pizza

MarysBeard · 25/04/2012 19:48

I don't tip as I usually pay online by card. On the odd occasion I have paid for a take away on my doorstep, I'd say they can keep the change, as long as it's not more than a couple of quid.

DizzyKipper · 25/04/2012 19:49

YANBU, being tipped isn't a right.

Springforward · 25/04/2012 19:50

Erm, it has never occurred to me until reading this thread that the delivery driver would expect a tip. Blush

boringnickname · 25/04/2012 19:52

you have to tip them on top of paying stupid amounts of money for a pizza? Oh but their boneless ribs are divine!!

Funny though, as someone mentioned that people tip the chinese - i always give the delivery lady a couple of quid but it has never occured to me to tip the pizza delivery person.

bitofcheese · 25/04/2012 19:52

i always tip as i guess the poor sod who delivers in all weathers probably gets paid a shit wage whilst delivering something that puts a smile on my face, i don't mind tipping as am pleased to get my pizza :)

faintpinkline · 25/04/2012 19:53

YANBU we only tip when the service is worth tipping for We nearly always tip our pizza delivery person because the pizza arrives quickly and still properly hot - don't use Dominos as in our experience it arrives late and cold. Try Papa Johns if you have one nearby

pethaubach · 25/04/2012 19:56

YANBU.

Aren't you supposed to get free wedges/side/something if your pizza arrives later than a certain period of time?

McHappyPants2012 · 25/04/2012 19:58

Dominos by me have gone crap, there wedges are hard and pizza cold.

Don't order from them anymore.

Yanbu you wouldn't tip the refuse collectors for emptying your bin or the cashier in the supermarket for packing your bags, so why tip for a meal

Shakirasma · 25/04/2012 20:00

I never tip the delivery people.

I know they probably only get minimum wage, but so do I! A takeaway is a rare treat and I can't afford to be paying any extra to subsidise someone else's pay.

NoVeggiesBeforeEggies · 25/04/2012 20:03

I never tip- for the same reason as Shakirasma!

TidyDancer · 25/04/2012 20:04

I will order Dominos online if we get it, so don't tip, but I generally will tip if paying cash at the door. It's just a nice thing to do.

I tend not to get Dominos much anymore, as their wedges are always undercooked with black bits on them. Their waffles are nice though.

Heavensmells · 25/04/2012 22:26

I've never tipped a delivery driver. It's never occurred to me to do so.
Is tipping for a takeaway a regional thing? I'm from the north west and I don't think that it's the done thing around here.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 25/04/2012 22:28

I've never tipped either - why would I?

minimisschief · 26/04/2012 01:05

why do people feel the need to tip. Very well if you think someone has done something particularly above and beyond their role to make something pleasent for you but why is it the done thing to tip all the time for certain services?

Spermysextowel · 26/04/2012 01:18

We had delivery pizza tonight. They warned me that the bad weather had made traffic terrible (the reason I couldn't fit in trip to shops in first place) so could be 50mins. It arrived in 35 which may or may not've been due to the driver's nifty skills, but either way I was so grateful that it was him & not me out on a night like tonight that I bunged him the 75p that I could scrape out of all our loose change. Hardly Lady Bountiful but he prob gets paid a crap wage so every little helps.

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 26/04/2012 01:24

DP and I are stupid tippers - (if we get takeout) we will generally tip ?4.00 on top of the cost of our meal. If we are out for dinner, we will tip 30 - 40%. Having worked in the service industry, I understand how shite it is. So we tip accordingly. We once left a 50% tip at a restaurant in Philly. The service was excellent.

Spermysextowel · 26/04/2012 01:26

Maybe it's because my mum always used to give the bin men & the post man a 'Christmas envelope'. I think both are supposed to decline 'gifts' now, tho it wasn't so long ago that the bin men would make a point of actually knocking on the door to hand you the leaflet re Xmas Bank Holiday collections in a very pointed manner. I know what it's like to be paid a crap wage in the employer's expectation that you'll get a tip, but even if I hadn't got the tips I'd've had to accept the rubbish wage anyway.

Spermysextowel · 26/04/2012 01:28

Wow! 30-40%! That's incredible!

Birdsgottafly · 26/04/2012 10:00

but why is it the done thing to tip all the time for certain services

It was traditional because these jobs were very low waged for a lot of work.

I'm from the north west and I don't think that it's the done thing around here.

I'm in Liverpool, everyone tips.

porcamiseria · 26/04/2012 10:01

i dont tip, why should I? I dont get it?

supermarket cashiers are not paid alot either?
