AIBU not to let my children have salt on their chips?

They have asked me to post on here to find out as they think I am Smile. I don't like salt, don't have it on anything (including chips) and don't use it in my cooking ever. They are age 10, 8 and 7 and I don't think they need it but am not sure if I am doing the right thing - I could be making them really want it. What do you think? Thanks

is this a stealth boast? Have a medal for not allowing your children salt.

stoatie · 24/04/2012 19:42

I don't - so they only get it they have Maccie D etc (bad mother image). Youngest and middle (age 8 and 16) not bothered by this but eldest (now 19) insists on loads of salt on hers now so Confused not sure what's best

satonawall · 24/04/2012 19:43

I only have salt on chips - not on any other food or in cooking. I don't think your chilldren will come to any harm if they only have salt on chips so URBU.

Catsmamma · 24/04/2012 19:44

I love salt.

Salt makes your brain work quicker!

AgentZigzag · 24/04/2012 19:44

It makes food taste better, if it didn't people wouldn't use it.

Just because you don't like it that doesn't mean they won't.

If they want it, let them have some.

Nospringflower · 24/04/2012 19:45

It isn't a stealth boast!! I really just don't like salt and so discourage them from adding it to things. Some folk at my work pour it on their food and am trying to avoid that but wondering if I am really making them crave it. I let them have it when we go out and they have chips - most recently at Ikea - and one of them poured on so much that he didn't like it and other two liked having it. But, they are unhappy with the rule that they can eat it when we are out but not at home.

'I could be making them really want it.'

That makes it sound like alcohol.

It's just salt.

Nospringflower · 24/04/2012 19:46

Not sure what relevance the fact that we had chips at Ikea has on anything Grin

We dont really eat a lot of salt either , dd2 will now but she is older dd2 doesnt put any salt on anything . yanbu

SuePurblyingoodVOICE · 24/04/2012 19:48

You have to have salt on chips. My DD doesn't have any added salt (as in I don't cook with it or use many processed foods) but I have to make an exception for chips. In fact she calls them 'salty chips'.
I'm fairly sure it's the law.

SydSaid · 24/04/2012 19:49

I think YAB a but U. I am assuming chips are an occasional thing, so a bit of salt on them won't do much damage. We need salt, too little can be a problem too, hyponatremia - although it's usually caused by too much water rather than too little salt, it CAN be caused by not enough salt in the diet.

amandine07 · 24/04/2012 19:50

Maybe let them have a little bit of salt on their chips, if you don't use it in cooking then it's not that bad it sounds as if you use it quite sparingly which is no bad thing.

My OH chucks salt over everything and it really annoys me...I don't want my salad, vegetables, chips ALL covered in loads of salt, I hate the taste when there's too much not averse to a bit of sprinkle :-)

So in answer to you question I think you are being a little bit U

kaylouise2184 · 24/04/2012 19:50

I now actually really want some chips. saltyones--

Naoko · 24/04/2012 19:51

It's just salt! Not a class A drug... I don't really use it in cooking either, but I do put it on my chips. It's a condiment for me, like I might put some oil on salad or a bit of ketchup if I have a burger. And it seems a bit unreasonable not to let them have a little salt on their chips just because you don't like it. You'll still be doing the cooking, so their 'normal' meals will still be made without salt - you're not 'opening the floodgates' or anything.

Mrsjay · 24/04/2012 19:52

you HAve to have salt on tomatoes though I think thats the law Grin

openerofjars · 24/04/2012 19:52

Doesn't the human body actually need a certain amount of salt to function properly?

PestoPenguin · 24/04/2012 19:53

Well, I'm really careful about salt, but I let the DCs put salt on chips and have a v small amount on plain popcorn. Neither of these things are eaten particularly frequently, so I don't think it's a big deal.

eurochick · 24/04/2012 19:53

Yes, the human body needs salt!

HumphreyCobbler · 24/04/2012 19:54

I use an appropriate amount of salt in my cooking. I see no problem with it. I would let them put salt on their chips.

Hulababy · 24/04/2012 19:54

My Dd is 10y and I let her put salt on her chips. And I cook with a little salt in some foods - not in cooking veg/pasta type food, but in bigger meals I include salt when seasoning. I don't use a great deal, but since DD has been a bit older I have used it.

Chips are more tasty with sat on them, and stay crispier too.

NettoSuperstar · 24/04/2012 19:54

Let them have salt
YABU.
Unless it's every night, it won't harm them.

Nospringflower · 24/04/2012 19:54

Laughing at kaylouise and Suepurbly Smile. I know lots of people who don't have salt on anything else but do on chips so maybe it is the law! But, I do think Naoko that I might be opening the floodgates knowing what my children are like - ''But Mum, we have it on chips, why cant we have it on .......''
