www.gumtree.com/p/jobs/part-time-assistant-nanny-4-hours-per-day/100842117

The job is offering a salary of £170 every 2 weeks for 20 hours work. This works out as £4.25 an hour, which is under minimum wage. Not only that but the two week trial is UNPAID. Surely that isn't legal?

I have increasingly been seeing jobs advertised at less than £5 per hour. Surely this is exploitation?

YANBU. Yes it's exploitation.

Reminds me of the thread a few weeks ago where the OP had advertised for someone to go on holiday with her and her friends in order to (amongst other things) drive them to the beach and get up early in the morning to prepare their breakfast Hmm - she couldn't understant why nobody had applied ...

WorraLiberty · 21/04/2012 17:17

That's crap money.

I also hope the person who wrote it isn't helping other people's kids with their homework, given her poor spelling and weird fetish for exclamation marks Grin

SauvignonBlanche · 21/04/2012 17:20

I don't know much about Gumtree, is there anyone you can report this to?

Tinwe · 21/04/2012 17:26

Think it's gone now - I can't open the link, it says that the ad has been removed

hardboiledpossum · 21/04/2012 17:27

I'm not sure. I will have a look though and will report it if possible. I've been using it to look for jobs at the moment but am getting pretty fed up, the majority of nanny employers are not interested in paying income tax and NI contributions.

DSS was offered a similar job, they told him that he could carry on claiming JSA whilst he trained. Does seem a bit odd though.

hardboiledpossum · 21/04/2012 17:31

That's interesting it's gone. Maybe someone did report it.

OP posts:
SauvignonBlanche · 21/04/2012 17:31

I replied, I asked if they were serious.

FreudianSlipper · 21/04/2012 17:34

i would hope it is not legal

they are probably hoping for someone here who is illegal or in a desperate situation that they can exploit

hardboiledpossum · 21/04/2012 17:45

Did you get a response?

OP posts:
SauvignonBlanche · 21/04/2012 17:46

No

hardboiledpossum · 21/04/2012 17:46

I saw one in Chelsea once offering under minimum wage for a 60 hour week.

OP posts:
TwoIfBySea · 21/04/2012 17:47

Herein lies the problem. There are sadly people who will take these jobs, thus keeping the wages low. It is going to be a massive issue in years to come.

hardboiledpossum · 22/04/2012 10:48

It's back up.

And a 2 week trial period without pay. That's truly shit.

5318008 · 22/04/2012 10:57

that new ad requires the person to pick up the 2 yr old from the CM and the other children from their local schools all at 3pm

jenfraggle · 22/04/2012 10:58

I reported it. There is a report link in the top right. If it keeps getting reported then something should get done. If they just keep doing a new advert each time and it gets reported then their username may get banned.

madmouse · 22/04/2012 10:58

Don't think you need to worry. No one will apply for it. What they are asking for is ridiculous and unworkable.

Flimflammery · 22/04/2012 11:03

Does the minimum wage apply to part-time hours, though?

madmouse · 22/04/2012 11:18

the minimum wage is an hourly rate so it doesn't matter whether you work full or part time.

The links supplied led to whole pages of ads and no single specific one so I did a search based on what you've said above, OP. Is this the ad? www.gumtree.com/p/jobs/wanted-flexible-childcare-provider-for-family-in-chadwell-heath/100011890

samandi · 22/04/2012 11:21

"Does the minimum wage apply to part-time hours, though?"

Yes of course it does.

margerykemp · 22/04/2012 11:33

Omg that is less than £2ph!

They cannot seriously think they can get someone to pick up their child from home at 6.30 am and keep until 5.30pm, bringing them back for only £100pwk?! What planet are they on?

A London nanny is more like £30k pa iirc. They are so deluded.

What is the penalty for this?

titfortat · 22/04/2012 11:45

All (apart from GrahamTribe's link has been removed. Sounds like they was completely ridiculous.

And also, £100 a week for the last one? In London? People would seriously HAVE to be desperate to accept that. Which is a shame considering some ARE that desperate :(

GrahamTribe · 22/04/2012 11:47

I don't think I'd ever be desperate enough to want to care for some-one elses kids! My own are bad enough! Grin
