www.gumtree.com/p/jobs/part-time-assistant-nanny-4-hours-per-day/100842117

The job is offering a salary of £170 every 2 weeks for 20 hours work. This works out as £4.25 an hour, which is under minimum wage. Not only that but the two week trial is UNPAID. Surely that isn't legal?

I have increasingly been seeing jobs advertised at less than £5 per hour. Surely this is exploitation?

I almost choked on my toast when I saw the salary!

GrahamTribe · 22/04/2012 12:14

I think I may have hit the wrong button on my laptop. I was looking at the government's National Minimum Wage website when I accidentally c&p'd the link into the box where you can reply to that Gumtree advert.

GrahamTribe · 22/04/2012 12:14

Sorry for the terrible grammar above.

StealthPolarBear · 22/04/2012 12:23

It put me off by starting dear madames

FrankWippery · 22/04/2012 12:37

It's a little over two quid an hour. Are they fucking mad?

GrahamTribe Grin easy mistake to make..

hardboiledpossum · 22/04/2012 17:39

GrahamTribe That's the same person but the ad is a bit different and the wage is different!

This is insane. But of all these people I feel the worst for the poor "lovely and energetic 2 year-old" who is destined to be looked after five whole days a week by a stranger who is getting paid peanuts for it. This smacks of child neglect. Poor little boy.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/04/2012 21:50

I live in Romford -2 miles from Chadwell Heath.
I drive and have car

I used to be a Mothers Help (in 1984)
I've had CRB check.

They wouldn't like me at 6.30 am - I struggle to get up for my own DC at 6.30 am (and that's the time they want pick up)

Do you think I'd get offered the job? I'd be the only one who applied Grin Grin Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/04/2012 22:03

If it's 4 hours a day
Child picked up 6.30am/7.30am
Drop off 4.00/5.30

depending on which week/parents shifts:

where is the 2 year old for the rest of the day? Nursery? Other family?

Even in Darkest Essex we don't send 2 yo to school Shock

Up chimneys and down coal mines yes, but not school. Grin

crazynanna · 22/04/2012 22:11

I actually replied and asked her if she was aware of the NMW.

She replied to me to "go and be a Ghandi somewhere else" Grin

Was Ghandi on the NMW,then? Confused

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 22/04/2012 22:27

Gumtree must breed stupid employers that think they're above the law.

I applied a couple of days ago for a position on my local Gumtree, and have received a reply tonight stating that I would have to work the first 2 weeks in the job for no pay as a 'trial'. Erm no thanks! Fuckwit!

saintlyjimjams · 22/04/2012 22:33

It's not 4 hours a day is it. Pick him up from their home at 6.30/7.30, then drop him back at 4/5.30.

Not sure what planet they're living on. (poor kid)

Ebb · 24/04/2012 11:20

Gumtree seems to bring out the worst parents who seem to be totally unaware of the NMW and can't see that people don't want to look after their precious darlings for a pittance.

How about this one? £400 a month and you get to share a bedroom with the baby! Shock On what planet can anyone think that is acceptable unless you're paying for a maternity nurse? Would you be expected to deal with the baby if it woke or would you have to put up with the parents wandering in whilst you're in bed trying to sleep? Hmm Seriously!

Evilclown · 24/04/2012 11:35

Googling the phone number brings up this advert.

anyone brave enough to ring?

Dozer · 24/04/2012 11:40

Good for you crazynanna, what a weird response! They sound hideous.

ScarlettInSpace · 24/04/2012 11:59

There's one on there, £150 pw live in [£200 live out], 40-50 hours pw minimum Shock

saintlyjimjams · 24/04/2012 12:01

I like the look of the job with the ponies, own cottage, bills paid and £250 a week! Honestly don't some of the slave drivers read that sort of ad and wonder why anyone would want to work for them

saintlyjimjams · 24/04/2012 12:03

sorry £250 to £350 pw plus ponies, looks a great job. I'd go for that!

But some of the others, pah. ebb the £400 baby room sharing job has gone.

Ebb · 24/04/2012 12:27

Saintly it's back up now. I did wonder whether it was posted by a Mumsnetter as it had disappeared briefly. Shock Grin

The ponies one looked fab. If I didn't have kids of my own....... Grin

squoosh · 24/04/2012 12:33

What are these 'live out nannies' they speak of? I presume they mean babysitters.

LulaPalooza · 24/04/2012 12:42

You can call or email the Pay And Work Rights Helpline to report someone advertising a position under NMW if you feel really strongly about it, but I guess people will just keep putting new ads up on Gumtree.

here

I might just link them to this thread!

LeBOF · 24/04/2012 12:47

Evilclown, am I right in assuming that this is an agency who are charging parents £7 an hour, but paying staff less than NMW then?

mamij · 24/04/2012 12:49

Omg. Can't believe the adverts! I bet the ppl who put up the posts think they are being generous! Esp the live-in nanny looking after three children, cooking and cleaning and getting to sleep in the same room as the baby! Confused

LeBOF · 24/04/2012 12:55

That live-in one sharing a room, where they aren't arsed if the worker speaks English sounds like actual slavery, tbh. It does happen.

squoosh · 24/04/2012 12:58

The £400 a month, share room with baby and look after two other kids is out-fucking-rageous.

'must be flexible, work on as needed basis, no hrs counting, as part of the family'

I'd say the family dog has a better deal than which ever poor sod has to take this job.
