To want a bigger diamond?

Beaverfeaver · 21/04/2012 16:59

My engagement ring is an old 0.1 carat diamond which I am currently having a wedding band made to fit.

We couldn't afford a fancy engagment ring when we got engaged and this one was in the family.

We were thinking that the wedding band could be inset with diamonds instead.
However , we have just been at the jewellers to discuss options and are now thinking about increasing the size of the 0.1 diamond in my engagment ring with a 0.25.

As soon as she showed us the 0.25 diamonds I couldn't believe how lovely it was and fell a bit in love with it, but just because its bigger.

I do have a niggle in the back of my head that it's wrong to do this though.

Am I being unreasonable to now want a diamond bigger than 0.1?

No way! My engagement ring is precious no matter the size and I think it's quite shallow to care tbh

Blush sorry

My Mum got a new (bigger) engagement ring, she loves it. Why not? She has been happily married to my Dad for 30 years so I don't think upgrading said anything about their marriage or relationship.

My engagement ring diamond is not huge but it is very very sparkly so I don't think I will ever change it.

BarredfromhavingStella · 21/04/2012 21:56

My 1st engagement ring was exchanged for a pint many years ago so when we were looking at platinum wedding rings it just didn't look right so sorry, yes I did pick a beautiful new ring which did suit the wedding band & I adore it. I kept the original though & it sits happily in my jewellery box.

Nothing wrong with wanting a pretty & bigger diamond :o

Mummy2FE · 22/04/2012 12:03

Changed mine to mark a milestone in our relationship and also rather than having an eternity ring as my finger is small and 3 rings would have looked stupid.

In addition, when we got engaged my DH didn't have lots of money to spend on the sparkly rings that had caught my eye. We both agreed at the time that I would change engagement ring at a later date and a LOT of years on we did, when our finances were a bit healthier.

I love my first ring however and I now wear it on my other hand everyday. When I look at both rings it makes me proud to see how far we have come as a couple both in terms of duration of relationship (which has had tough times) and also due to working very hard.

By the way, when I chose the new ring the jewellers said it was quite common to do so!

TheFallenMadonna · 22/04/2012 12:17

How long have you been engaged?

I'm never sure about making a wedding ring to for the engagement ring, probably because I usually only arse my wedding ring, and it would look odd.

TheFallenMadonna · 22/04/2012 12:19

Oh my good at autocorrect!!!

I of course wear my wedding ring, and on my finger...

TheFallenMadonna · 22/04/2012 12:19

I give up...

MrsShitty · 22/04/2012 12:22

YANBU my DH has always said we would get me another stone if I wanted it when we can. Im not sure as I do want to keep my original but I might do something elese with it...open minded!

IBlameThePenguins · 22/04/2012 12:22

My engagement ring cost 80th pounds. It has 5nr tiny diamonds, but I wouldn't swap it for all the world. As someone said upthread, it tels our story. We got.engaged when we had no money because we loved each other. Maybe in the future I'll get a fancy eternity ring.

Beaverfeaver · 22/04/2012 12:47

Mummy2FE What sort of ring did you go for in the end?

TheFallenMadonna - We have been engaged for 2 years. Been together for 12.

I have been looking at diamonds & diamond rings online to compare prices and qualities between the main retailers, and places like Bluenile, and I have confused myself silly.

The diamond the jeweler showed me (the one making my wedding band) was a colour E, 0.25 carat, brilliant cut and would have been about £690.

It looked gorgeous and very sparkly. And for something that doesnt sound large, was much bigger than my current one.

However, having looked online, 0.25 18k white gold rings vary between £500 and £2000. Even the £2000 are colour type of I and are generally not as good quality.

I keep thinking I should be going for quality over size, but expected that if you were spending £2000 on a smallish 0.25 ring, that you would get the best diamond available, but this doesnt seem to be the case.

Had a quick look on tiffanys, and although they aren't a bad price, the smallest they go to seems to be 0.5, however this is not much more money than the smaller ones in Beaverbrooks.

Local independant jeweller (although not as cheap as Bluenile) seems to be best value of the shops where you can actually see before you buy.

Now we just need to decide whether to keep and add a new ring at a later date, or change the existing.
I dont ever not want to be wearing my engagement ring, so adding new rings seems silly when you have small hands.

I actually laughed out loud at the idea of arsing your wedding ring TheFallenMadonna

Beaverfeaver · 22/04/2012 13:38

I also forgot to mention - this is a family ring, but not his families, but mine.

It was left to me and was a ring I have had in my jewellery box since I was 19.

It didnt get worn as it was in such a bad state and was too big.

When we started talking about getting engaged, we couldnt afford to get a new ring, so I suggested he could use that ring and get it restored sot that I could finally wear it.

So thinking of it in this way, maybe it is better to just get a completly new ring, that would be from DP completly, and wear my current ring on my other hand.

I agree with notactuallyme...........its all just stuff.

Get what you want.

Ive 3 rings for my wedding finger yet for my 15th anniversary im getting one 4 stone ring-a stone for each of my kids as thats what I want now. Think one ring looks better on my hand too.

nkf · 22/04/2012 16:44

I think there's something rather sweet about cheap looking engagement rings and flashy eternity rings. Tells a story to me.

dementedma · 22/04/2012 16:45

I guess I'm not very sentimental. My engagement ring no longer fits and to be honest, I have no idea where it is. My original wedding ring was stolen so I chose a new one that I liked. I quite often don't wear that which pisses DH off immensely, but I don't need a knick-knack to be married. I'm still his wife if I wear it or not.

Ephiny · 22/04/2012 16:47

I would get a new ring, if you're unsure about changing an old family ring. That's probably easier anyway, and lets you choose exactly what you want.

For me there's no problem of 'it wouldn't be your engagement ring' - e.g. I'm having a cheap wedding ring for the ceremony, as I've never worn a ring before and am not sure how I'll get on with it, but if I end up wearing it often I might well get a nicer one. It doesn't bother me that it won't be literally the exact same ring we used in the ceremony, for me it's the symbolism that counts.

Ephiny · 22/04/2012 16:51

Actually I just realised you're not in fact married yet OP - in that case I'd probably rather spend the money on the wedding than on new diamonds!

HateBeingCantDoUpMyJeans · 22/04/2012 17:13

I'm glad I got to help pick mine and increases the budget by 50%

YouAREworthIt · 22/04/2012 17:33

I don't understand why some of you got a wedding ring that didn't match your engagement ring. Why didn't you have the ER with you when you bought the WR? Confused.

Angelico · 22/04/2012 17:44

The way I look at it, you want to love your engagement ring because you wear it every day. I think whatever ring my DH picked I would love it sentimentally BUT you are the one wearing it day in day out. I love my ring and it was expensive but I don't care because it is the only nice jewellery I own or will ever own (I'm not a jewellery person). It is beautiful, gets loads of comments, people asking to try it on etc and I love that because tbh I am a bit of a scruffbag clotheswise :o It kind of stops me looking like a complete vagabond :o

thatisall · 22/04/2012 17:48

I'd never change my engagement ring. Im lucky that I really like it!! But its the fact that this is the ring my dh proposed with that makes it beautiful. Each to their own though

Mummy2FE · 22/04/2012 22:20

My second engagement ring is princess cut with diamonds on the band too.

The second ring is not a huge rock or anything like that, it just has a bit more sparkle and detail.

We didn't need to change my wedding ring, it matched perfectly which was very important to me.

As in my earlier post, I still wear the original ring and will always do so as I don't want to forget those special early days when we were planning our future and it was all exciting and new!
