"New Face of Ferrero" competition - only white children should apply?

RedApple11 · 20/04/2012 14:17

Just bought a pack of Ferrero treats for my DD and was shocked at what looks like a blatantly discriminatory campaign. The new "Faces of Ferrero" (ie, the winning children whose images will be used to promote Ferrero products) are all white and fair featured. Five boys, one girls. Are only fair white children attractive enough to be the Face of Ferrero then?

I contacted Ferrero about this and was told:

"We would like to stress that the competition was judged purely on the basis of the children's responses to the question which was: "what they want to be when they grow up and why?".

So I investigated further and discovered that actually, what a crock that was. In fact, all entrants were required to upload their children's photos in order to have a valid entry and these images were then displayed in a gallery. See www.faceofkinder.com/terms.php and scroll down to section 9.3 which states:

"The photograph must have been taken within the last 6 months before it is sent as an entry in the competition. The child must be fully clothed. Whilst entrants may crop and enlarge photographs, they must not submit a photograph which has been substantially altered. By entering into the competition, the entrant agrees that the promoter can visit the child to check that the photograph is an accurate representation of him or her. No changes will be permitted to photographs accepted into the Gallery after the voting period opens on 30th May."

Anyway, the wonderfully white and photogenic winners can all be found here: www.faceofkinder.com/gallery.php

Don't get me wrong, these kids are all gorgeous and this isn't sour grapes - I had no idea about this competition and wouldn't have entered my DD into it anyway.

That said, I think it's outragous that in this day and age, a company like Ferrero can get away with promoting the idea that only fair white children are attractive enough to be the Face of Ferrero. This seems wrong on so many levels.

One day, people will realise that a variety of skin colour is no more a measure of "diversity" than is a variety of shoe sizes.

giveitago · 20/04/2012 14:21

Can you see all the entrants on this site or just the winners.

londonone · 20/04/2012 14:22

Lol- those kids were clearly not chosen for their looks! You are paranoid.

ginmakesitallok · 20/04/2012 14:22

Just because they had to upload a photo doesn't mean that they were judged on it?? Unless you know that lots of non-white children had also entered the fact that it was white children who won doesn't automatically make it racist?

SarahStratton · 20/04/2012 14:23

I can't see that it's any different from any company that goes to a model agency and asks for X Y and Z, tbh.

DonInKillerHeels · 20/04/2012 14:23

Maybe only white families entered their children in the competition? If you don't know the makeup of the applications, you can't tell whether this is discriminatory or not. So untwist your knickers a little bit.

NiniLegsInTheAir · 20/04/2012 14:23

Shouldn't it also be outrageous that there are 5 boy winners and only 1 girl? And I wouldn't class them all as 'fair featured', there's one blond, 3 dark haired, one mousy brown and I think one redhead.

Psammead · 20/04/2012 14:23

YABU. Why would you assume that skin colour ever came into the minds of the people doing the competition?

LentillyFart · 20/04/2012 14:24

Help me out here. Where exactly is Ferrero promoting that only fair white children are attractive enough?

DonInKillerHeels · 20/04/2012 14:24

And also, shouldn't you be getting on your high horse about the fact that only one of the six is a girl?

Petsinmypudenda · 20/04/2012 14:24

'this isn't sour grapes' - I think it is...

nothingoldcanstay · 20/04/2012 14:25

They have two black children in their advert for face of 2011 though (on the link you sent). Isn't it done by voting public anyway?

LentillyFart · 20/04/2012 14:25

This thread is nothing more and nothing less than a stupid attempt at starting a bunfight

Kerryblue · 20/04/2012 14:25

Luca, Jack and Dillan all have brown hair!

Are you colour blind?

Blacksquirrel · 20/04/2012 14:25

YABabitU & taking it personally.

Your thread title suggests that they only asked for white children, which isn't the case & you have no idea what the rest of the children (who applied) looked like or what their backgrounds were.

thatisall · 20/04/2012 14:26

Only two of them are white and fair?

A couple have fairly dark, 'olive' complexions.

I'm not saying you're wrong OP but I would hate a company to discriminate against the entry of one of these six children because they felt they had to include at least one darker skinned child.
If these 6 had the best entry then they are the 6 finalists end of.

lynniep · 20/04/2012 14:26

well the boy taking up most of their homepage clearly isnt 'white' so I dont think they're that discriminatory...

Ephiny · 20/04/2012 14:26

It's surely difficult to judge without knowing how many non-white children were entered, it's quite possible (in fact very likely!) that there weren't nearly as many.

I'm not sure what you're suggesting here. Do you think the winners should have been picked to meet some diversity quota rather than on the quality of their entry?

What do you think about the fact that there was only one girl among the 6 winners?

RedApple11 · 20/04/2012 14:26

If the children's image was a non issue, why all the fuss about the photo and that it had to be a true likeness, unaltered etc? Of course the children's images were used to judge this competition or why would you need an image to enter the competition?

What?? You investigated?? Seriously, find something constructive to do and stop getting your knickers in a twist about something that clearly isnt an issue!!

SarahStratton · 20/04/2012 14:28

To ensure they were children.

Ephiny · 20/04/2012 14:28

So once they've picked the winners they don't have to chase up to get photos sent in etc? Often it's simpler to make things like that an entry requirement.

SarahStratton · 20/04/2012 14:28

Can't believe some of the stuff people get wound up about. I'm almost tempted to trot out that sodding 'first world problem' phrase.

But then I'd have to shoot myself.

lou2321 · 20/04/2012 14:29

These are the sort of opinions that make things very difficult for people nowadays such as employers or teachers etc as everyone is so paranoid about making sure people are included even if they have to go over the top to do so.

At my DSs school there is one non-white person about of 150 children, its just the area we live in, would you say that if he wasn't picked for something along with 5 others who were white would this be discriminating. Surely if you picked them just because of the colour of their skin then it is discriminating the other way round.

This sort of stuff makes me so cross!!!
