Actually i know i an not being unreasonable. I don't know what's been done to it before it goes into its box.

Husband says its weird but no its not, he is just a filthy minge

I have never, ever heard of anyone sterilising a new toothbrush before. Being on MN opens my eyes to all sorts of strange behaviour.

I imagine that toothbrush manufacturers have to observe strict hygiene rules. After all, these things go in your mouth.

Sorry, but I think this is really OCD behaviour.

TheCunningStunt · 20/04/2012 08:36

Grin at sterilising then putting it damp in a case..op ...that is minge
Also minge me me laugh!!

FondleWithCare · 20/04/2012 08:45

Never, it wouldn't cross my mind.

Are you the same poster that washes yoghurt pots before eating from them?

Follyfoot · 20/04/2012 08:52

Sorry to be the harbinger of bad news, but boiling it for 5 minutes wont sterilise it anyway Grin

TanteRose · 20/04/2012 08:56

Follyfoot is right

you need to boil for at least 10 mins, and if you do that to a toothbrush, I would imagine all the bristles would fall out (the glue would melt or something)

you need Milton tablets if you are serious about this

Petsinmypudenda · 20/04/2012 08:59

The toothbrush gets dried before i put it in the case obviously.

trixymalixy · 20/04/2012 09:03

Your husband is right, it is weird.

Agree that toothbrush cases are minging.

Oh of interest, how do you get your toothbrush 100% dry? Hairdryer?

TanteRose · 20/04/2012 09:05

yes, but where do you dry it? what with??

there are germs EVERYWHERE

if you just leave it out in the bathroom, it will be covered in dust particles, poo particles, human skin flakes....I could go on Grin

Petsinmypudenda · 20/04/2012 09:05

No i use a little hand towel and dry it...Oh fuck, i admit that is a bit weird.

I stand by sterilising new toothbrushes though.

OP posts:
Mrsjay · 20/04/2012 09:06

they are sterillised and vaccum packed before they are sent out i saw it on How its made Grin i think you are behaving a tad strange tbh I dont think people sterrilise toothbrushes .

nagynolonger · 20/04/2012 09:06

My grandma used to pour boiling water over toothbrushes before the first use.
I don't think they came in sealed wrappers in those days.
The only time I sterilised a toothbrush was DS1 very first. I stuck it in the milton with his spoons etc. I didn't bother with DC2 - DC6 but kept them in the rack with any others.

Flisspaps · 20/04/2012 09:07

So is the hand towel sterile?

Petsinmypudenda · 20/04/2012 09:07

Mrsjay - they say it sterilised and sealed But how do you know they do that? They could be lying

OP posts:
helpyourself · 20/04/2012 09:08

eugh at the thought of putting in a little case. Nice and warm and moist and buggy from your mouth, then wrapped up warm to fester.

Kveta · 20/04/2012 09:11

do you lack an oral immune system? if so, YANBU. If you do have a normal immune response, then you are quite simply paranoid and mad. HTH :o

Petsinmypudenda · 20/04/2012 09:13

Its not the germs though.

Its not knowing what has been done to my toothbrush before it get put in its box and sent to the shop.

OP posts:
Mrsjay · 20/04/2012 09:15

they could be lying but it did look like they were sterrilising them but if you want to pour boiling water and milton on your toothbrush and if that helps your obsession then go ahead Grin but i think if toothbrushes were to be sterrilised dont you think some company would bring out a special cleaner for toothbrushes ? I just think its weird and cases are a breeding ground for germs ,

helpyourself · 20/04/2012 09:15

I x posted, that's better, but still a little wierd.

What I do is occasional blitzing. So I tend to not use bleach as a rule, but if we've got colds or upset stomachs then I'll thoroughly clean with bleach loo seats, handles, up the towels washing etc. Ditto with tooth brushes. If there's a cold around I'll tcp them all. But routine bug busting- nah you need thosee friendly bacteria.

Mrsjay · 20/04/2012 09:16

yes im sure the toothbrush factoryworkers scratch their bums with the toothbrushes befoe its packaged im positive that's what happens Grin

DaisySteiner · 20/04/2012 09:17

What will you do if you ever need an operation? They say that they've been sterilised, but maybe the theatre staff use the forceps to tweeze out their chin hairs before you get there?! You'd have to go in and boil them yourself to be sure. And stay awake throughout, just to keep an eye on them, obviously Grin

Petsinmypudenda · 20/04/2012 09:20

Hospitals are filth ridden death traps we all know that and accept it.

However toothbrushes should be cleaned when you get them.

GeraldineHoHoHobergine · 20/04/2012 09:22

I work in a theatre! Have you been watching me daisy?

sarahtigh · 20/04/2012 09:22

toothbrushes are in sealed packets for hygenei reasons, toothbrushes cases ok for travel to prevent bristles bending not a good idea generally as encourages bacterial growth

also you dry with towel ( i trust also sterile!)

I'm a dentist and would never sterilise a toothbrush at home, the most important thing for germs is making sure they are nowhere near toilet bowl

Boiling water will help but it is not sterlising

your toothbrush gets more germs from being in your mouth than it does from standing in toothbrush holder

most bacteria are good and of those in our mouth 90% are good help start food digestive process etc

sorry but its a bit weird and unnecessary

Mrsjay · 20/04/2012 09:23

I spose people have their own quirks thing so really if you are uncomfortable and have a bit of a freak at the thought of an ikky toothbrush then happy cleaning , I have alady at work who soaks fruit for half an hour before she will feed it to anybody even bannanas Shock [in their skin) I think she is loony she is happy ,

Mrsjay · 20/04/2012 09:24

see a dentist is telling you pets Grin
