To not agree with moves to ban alcohol in a University as it may be best for Muslim beliefs

Surely, if you don't agree with alcohol consumption you keep away from such establishments? The campus has lots of facilities to accommodate everyone including cafes.

Is this just taking things too far?

Yes, it is.

Sorry, bad link

I'm no fan of drunken behaviour and can understand that when it spills out of bars into public areas then non drinkers (for any reason, not just religious) may have grounds for objecting, but yes.....This is going too far (puts colander on head)...

overmydeadbody · 18/04/2012 20:08

That is taking things ridiculously too far.

For Goodness Sake. Whatever happened to free choise?

This isn't even a muslim country.

CrunchyFrog · 18/04/2012 20:10

Ooh, I went there!

I would be surprised if it was actually credible, rather than some weirdo deciding to do something to make themselves look culturally sensitive.

But I'm bored of religious types tramping all over my fun times (cf: the very heavy handed police presence across the Easter weekend, purely because the churches insist the heathens must be prevented from drinking after 10pm on their Special Day. Not sure why 10pm is important, but still.)

As with everything, if your religion demands that you don't drink, then don't.

overmydeadbody · 18/04/2012 20:10

And it's not even like all muslim students don't drink alcohol. Plenty of them do, and it's good that they have the choice. FFS. Such a stupid stupid idea. Talk about controlling.

Aboutlastnight · 18/04/2012 20:11

I am sure the vast majority of Muslim students do not have an issue with a university bar. I am sure they walk past all manner of pubs, clubs and bars on their way to university without fainting.

If you look at the comments below it seems there have been aero complaints about the bar from Muslim students.

Springforward · 18/04/2012 20:12

Blimey. How about letting people make their own choices?

I don't recall anyone forcing me to go into a bar at uni....

Birdsgottafly · 18/04/2012 20:12

There is still going to be plenty of 'free choice', a complete ban isn't propossed and some of the cut in subsidised bars is because of the increase in liver disease in younger people directly as a result of excess drinking.

It's part of the overall initiative totackle the binge drinking culture that we have in the UK.

Aero??? 'Zero'

thekidsrule · 18/04/2012 20:13

hardly seems worth going to university if this happens, lol

Bluestocking · 18/04/2012 20:13

Look at the BBC version of the story. All London Met are considering is some alcohol-free areas of the campus. Would you still think that an unreasonable proposal?

MoreBeta · 18/04/2012 20:14

I strongly disagree with this. Only 20% of students are Muslims and threfore why should the other 80% not enjoy a drink.

The idea of female students being chaperoned by a male relative at university also does not sit well with me either. This is the UK.

If you don't want to experience UK society don't enter university in the UK - and that goes for any race or religion, not just Muslims.

HalfPastWine · 18/04/2012 20:16

The Vice Chancellor is proposing it for 'cultural sensitivity' issues. Alcohol today, no pork in the restaurant tomorrow. Where will it end. Plus, if Universities do this then who next?

OP posts:
Squeegle · 18/04/2012 20:16

I think there is a lot of "media blowing it out of proportion to make a good story" going on. All to try and drum up a bit of anti muslim fervour.

BonnieBumble · 18/04/2012 20:17

(Makes mental note to cross London Met off list of possible places to study MA).

HalfPastWine · 18/04/2012 20:17

This surprised me too. Very controlling imo.

EdithWeston · 18/04/2012 20:18

The BBc article is much more balanced. There is no (known) call from any Muslim group for this, but NUS spokesperson says that many Universities do have alcohol-free zones, for a variety of (unspecified) reasons an that they support such proposals.

It'll make no difference whatsoever to the reported 6 other pubs within 200m of the campus.

AKissIsNotAContract · 18/04/2012 20:18

I used to live near there. There is a bar across the road and several more within walking distance. If people want to drink they have plenty of options. There is no need for a bar actually in the university.

Birdsgottafly · 18/04/2012 20:18

Could posters try reading Blue's link (mine didn't work) before posting, so they stick to the facts.

If you don't want to experience UK society don't enter university in the UK

Excess drinking in the UK is becoming a major problem and if alcohol free zones are wanted, then they should be provided. The whole of the UK doesn't binge drink.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/04/2012 20:20

I like a Wine but why should educational establishments be associated with drinking and cheap, large amounts of it? Two things I remember from my fresher weeks. No means no campaigns and enormous amounts of drinking (nights out, organised and not). I don't think setting University up as a massive binge drinking session is entirely useful anyway. I cannot understand why this has to be blamed on the Muslims (except that everything seems to be nowadays).

HalfPastWine · 18/04/2012 20:20

This isn't about binge drinking though. It's about attracting more Muslim students to the University.

I really doubt it is as reported in the OP. More shit stirring going on me thinks.

PurpleRomanesco · 18/04/2012 20:25

I think you are 100% spot on Squeegle.

Exactly how many of the 6000 Muslim students were asked what they thought of this?
