to have a jaw-drop moment at a 6-month old drinking Diet Coke

This may be my first AIBU, im not sure, but not my first thread. I am wondering whether I am either:

  1. correct to hoik up my judgy pants or
  2. out of touch with what is now normally accepted

6month old DNeice given a sip of Diet Coke at my house by her father, firstly from his finger which he dipped into his glass and second a sip from the rim of the can onto which he had poured a little of the diet coke. I did a bit of a shocked face but I do think it was taken as a 'wow, impressive' face by her father who said "ah she loves it, watch she'll be begging for more" cue him taking the can away from her and watching as she did a bit of a mini strop.

DNs mum was out of the room at this point, but when she returned, DN was crying and SIL was saying "why is she crying, she never cries, what's wrong?".

I am taken aback at a 6 month old drinking Diet Coke as surely they only need milk and a bit of water and, to me, there's just no need to give it (apart from in SILs DHs case where I do think he was doing it to try and impress).

I feel half guilt that I have a judgy pants wedgy and half frustrated that I just didn't agree with it.

I wouldnt say anything to SIL or her DH unless they actually ask my opinion, but wondered is it wrong of me to be so shocked?

There's a family picture of me supping a bottle of Guinness at the age of 4mths. I'm now teetotal.

undercoverPrincess · 18/04/2012 17:06

I personally wouldn't do this but wouldn't be shocked either.

manicbmc · 18/04/2012 17:06

Is he trying to impress upon you that he is an idiot?

RuleBritannia · 18/04/2012 17:07

It's not wrong of you to be shocked that your DN is being given a rubbish drink that will do her no good. However, it's nothing to do with you how she is brought up.

If the parents ask for your opinoon give it - but not before.

DowagersHump · 18/04/2012 17:08

I never understand why people do stuff like that. Why would you want to give a baby caffeine and artificial sweeteners? Confused What's the point?

ObiWan · 18/04/2012 17:08

It was only a taste, the child can hardly be said to have been drinking the stuff.

It's probably not up there in the list of 'first foods', but it won't kill the child. I had great fun giving my lot tastes of stuff they wouldn't be 'eating' until they were much older (if ever).

Or have I completely missed the point, and this is actually a joke thread?

southeastastra · 18/04/2012 17:08

that's nothing, i drank half pints of stout at three months

usualsuspect · 18/04/2012 17:09

Diet coke is awful , he could have least given her full fat coke

gafhyb · 18/04/2012 17:09

He sounds like a bit of a twat TBH. It reminds me of people who give alcohol to small children to show of (something or other)

I would be annoyed. It's totally unnecessary, and whilst not directly harmful, it's not putting the child's needs first.

gafhyb · 18/04/2012 17:09

show off

Hopandaskip · 18/04/2012 17:10

wearing a large fluffy pair of pants.

gafhyb · 18/04/2012 17:10

Diet Coke is awful.

Hassled · 18/04/2012 17:11

Will no one think of the children? It should have been Coke Zero. Far nicer.

Labootin · 18/04/2012 17:12

I was given old navy rum, in my nighttime formula bottle to make me sleep through and on my gums when i was teething

Never did me any harm

twitch

Debsbear · 18/04/2012 17:12

I thought you were talking about a 6 month old being given a whole can of diet coke from the thread title! I think you may be over-reacting a little. It's obviously not the best thing to give a 6 month old, but neiter is it going to kill them. People smoke around kids everyday, I know people who have given alcohol to babies (dipping dummies in pints of beer and even one who gave his baby sips out of a glass), a lady who used to fill her babies bottle with "full fat Coke" and a friend of mine who could down a bottle of vodka in one after being given vodka in her bottle as a baby. I think you maybe need to keep a bit of perspective on this - it really isn't child abuse on a grand scale. As I say it's a "double take" moment rather than a full on "jaw dropper" Grin

MissVforVendetta · 18/04/2012 17:12

Wasting Diet Coke? On a baby?

Please, save it for those of us that appreciate it.

MadameChinLegs · 18/04/2012 17:13

Not a joke thread, promise. Am a far too regular poster.

I would never say anything, unless asked, and yes, I agree it won't kill her, I just think that at 6 months old there's no need for it. The way I see it, she has nothing to gain from even a sip and the potential for her to be given it at larger quantities at a really young age.

I do try not to be PFB with DD but I just cannot see what would be the benefit of her having even a sip.

I agree manicbmc he has just shown himself (in my eyes) to be a bit of an idiot.

I used to give my kids a squeeze of lemon - the slice that was in my diet coke in the pub I worked. Funny.:o

MadameChinLegs · 18/04/2012 17:15

Debs sorry if the title was in some way misleading, thats not what I intended. Yes, while there are kids all over the place around smoke or having beer-dummies etc that doesn't mean that we should be ok with it, just because it happens.

Hmm

I thought you were talking about coke in a bottle too. A little taste is hardly jaw-dropping.

Itsjustafleshwound · 18/04/2012 17:18

But if you look closer at the products marketed for babies they do contain some unnecessary sugars!!

He is an arse, but then I have perhaps done some things I shouldn't have ...

YouAREworthIt · 18/04/2012 17:21

I can't believe people think it is okay. She is 6 months ffs.

entropygirl · 18/04/2012 17:22

YANBU particularly if the kid has already learned to strop in order to get more....

Snakeonaplane · 18/04/2012 17:22

My mums friend gave 4month old dd baileys Hagen daz when she was EBF, she is 7 and alive to tell the tale.

This actually makes me feel better as yesterday I was feeling guilty as I gave 4mo dd2 a piece of apple to suck as it was the only thing that would stop her screaming

FlamingGalar · 18/04/2012 17:24

YANBU

I had a friend who from 5mths gave her ds a bottle of tea in the afternoon and a bottle of Horlicks before he went to bed - every day. She wondered why he never slept well!

Some people are just plain daft imo.
