Pampers / Huggies pricing requires A-level maths to work out best value.

Ok, so it's not A level maths. But it's always very, very confusing.

Always, at least one size of pack is on special offer, usually a multibuy special offer. The little labels which tell you the cost per nappy apply only to a single buy, so don't help you here. I was on Ocado a minute ago, looking for size 4+ nappies, and had to work out whether 3 lots of 28 for £15 was better than 30 for £4.32, or 74 for £9.85, or two lots of 48 for £16, or two lots of 70 for £22....

This is not obvious. Not easy. I have a maths degree and am not afraid to use it, but I resent the cynical and obvious marketing strategy which is to bamboozle parents as much as possible.

(Disclaimer: this is not a big AIBU, just a minor irritation like having your digestive disintegrate in your coffee. Just wanted to share the moan. Thank you.)

Agreed! I remember when I was sleep deprived with newly found baby brain trying to work out if it was better to buy a mega box of pampers for £15 or two jumbo boxes for £20. I was stood on Asda for ages totally confused!

ihatemycat · 18/04/2012 14:45

If someone makes an "app for that" for smart phones they'll rake it in... I've stood in the nappy aisle with my phone calculator before tying to make a decision before...

SuzysZoo · 18/04/2012 14:46

I always worked on the principle that my target price for Pampers proper (not Simply) was 10p a nappy. If you find that, but a truck full!

SuzysZoo · 18/04/2012 14:47

I mean buy a truck full!

DrowninginDuplo · 18/04/2012 15:05

Drives me demented as well. (I too have a Maths degree). I'm stood in the isle looking like a complete muppet going

so that's.. Multiply by.. Divide by... Subtract the number you first thought of.. Screech at children. Sod it. Start again.

GrumbleAndGrouse · 18/04/2012 15:12

YANBU.

I once had to phone dp at work to get him to do the maths. Blush I was stood in the aisle nearly in tears of frustration at trying to work out whether the huggies on offer were a better deal than the asda own brand ones!

In my defence we had 3 in nappies and I was very sleep deprived!

I go to mysupermarket.co.uk and you can compare prices on there across all supermarkets as well as Boots and Superdrug if you use the Beauty section. It gives you the cost per nappy for the offer. You have to keep an eye out as occasionally there are mistakes (like I once saw it showing a Mega box offer at Boots with Jumbo boxes for other shops) but it is really really helpful to see the best offers on at the mo.

You can use if for any shopping but I only really use it for nappies.

MilyP · 18/04/2012 15:14

I always buy the same nappies and compare prices across the different shops. Sounds like you guys want to find the cheapest nappies and a particular shop. Would work for that too I think.

TeWihara · 18/04/2012 15:21

I've noticed as well that for some reason the boxes of newborn nappies are often 4/5p more per nappy than the bigger packs.

Highly recommend Kiddicare, order online & they deliver to your door, enough to last a month. You do have to pay delivery unless you buy two months worth though.

I think the nappies are better than pampers (& cheaper.)

toobreathless · 18/04/2012 15:42

Grin at 'I have a baths degree & am not afraid to use it.' thanks for making me smile.

toobreathless · 18/04/2012 15:42

Oh for goodness sake MATHS degree, silly iPhone!

StripyMagicDragon · 18/04/2012 16:00

Supermarkets own brand are even cheaper, we moved to asda's own until potty training.

I also used mymoneysupermarket to find the cheapest and best offers :)

But YANBU, they do it to bamboozle you!

SalopianTubes · 18/04/2012 16:04

yy, Stranded! Aldi nappies are cheapest by far & never leak!

Mibby · 18/04/2012 16:07

Amazon sell pampers, free delivery, and show you the price per nappy in the offer. You need to plan ahead tho

wigglesrock · 18/04/2012 16:08

I use Tescos but my friend swears by Lidl.

stressheaderic · 18/04/2012 16:13

It is definitely done to baffle often-stressed-already parents. 'Carry pack' (aren't they all? what else do you do, kick them along the floor?), maxi pack, jumbo pack, mega box.... I gave up and just bought Aldi's, £4.99 for a big pack, no leaks.

Although Morrisons have got Huggies on offer for £4.99 at the mo so I 'treated' DD to some Smile

fhdl34 · 18/04/2012 16:15

Another vote here for aldi nappies

Mrbojangles1 · 18/04/2012 16:19

Stopped buying both bought wilko nappies when desprate one day and never went back hold in the wee fad and they are a really good fit not to tight or o loose and the price is very good value.

noblegiraffe · 18/04/2012 16:21

Calculating best buys is C grade GCSE maths not A-level. HTH Wink

HalleLouja · 18/04/2012 16:27

I use resuables as much as possible. Also own brand are usually fine [polishes halo].

Lidl nappies are far cheaper! I always aim for 10 p per nappy.

Starwisher · 18/04/2012 17:47

Kiddicare nappies are about 8p each
