To not want to be my dogs 'mummy'?

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 18/04/2012 07:46

I have a 10mo DD, I am her mummy. Not the dogs. Everyone seems to refer to me as his 'mum/mummy'. When I took him to the vets and the vet took him away to be weighed she brought him back in and said "Here you go, back to mummy." and quite a few other people have made other comments (can't think of any straight off the top of my head).

It just really bugs me.

AIBU?

I love being my dog's mum.

But I don't think YABU to not want to be called it yourself.

Bertrude · 18/04/2012 08:57

YADNBU

Its one reason I can't be doing with too much time at my ILs. BIL has a dog and all the time MIL is referred to as Grandma and we have Aunty (SIL) and they tried Aunty Bert. Thankfully I have a wonderful 'I Said No' face so that didn't get repeated again!

Its a dog. And it gets probably equal amount of babying that my nephew gets at my mum and dads

Mrsjay · 18/04/2012 09:00

YANBU i loved my dog when she was still with us and i miss her she died last year , but she was a dog not a child i was not her mummy and i didnt treat her like a 3rd child , I also hate pampered pooches in clothes your dog has a furry coat and fail to see what a pink tutu benefits the dogs ,

NervousAt20 · 18/04/2012 09:09

I'm my dogs mummy and he's the baby Grin

Mrsjay · 18/04/2012 09:10

nooooooo nervous the dog is not the baby Grin

ddubsgirl · 18/04/2012 09:41

i am my fur babys mummy the cat on the other hand owns us lol we are his servants!

Kladdkaka · 18/04/2012 09:44

I'm mummy and my dog is Babbiwoof. Blush

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 18/04/2012 09:56

Awwww I am 'mummy' to all our pets. I love it!

FunnysInLaJardin · 18/04/2012 09:57

oh my god there's loads of you, and Sarah he is not your baby boy Grin

I call my cat Minikins which is long for Mini, but she is not my baby. She would die a thousand deaths if I tried to treat her like a baby. Same with the hamster and the fish

aurynne · 18/04/2012 10:00

Our dog has a mother and a father... they are dogs too, and live an hour away from our house. My DP and I are her owners.

I find that "mummy and daddy" thing ridiculous.

GoGoBananas · 18/04/2012 10:04

YADNBU. I can't bear it. My MIL tried to refer to me as our cats' mummy once and I had to kill her immediately and bury her underneath the patio. It makes me cringe.

Ex-SIL used to have birthday parties for her dog, cooked it a whole salmon on the bbq, invited guests (who had to bring a present or wouldn't be allowed in), didn't feed the humans and got everybody to sing happy birthday. All before dressing the terrier up in a bloody dress (it was a boy) and rocking it to sleep. I judged her furiously.

PandaWatch · 18/04/2012 10:39

YABU to think that it in anyway takes away from your mummy-ship of your human baby. I think some people just don't like saying owner as it's a bit formal and doesn't really do justice to an animal that does, at least to a certain extent, become part of the family. It's also important to remember that dog's view their owners as their pack and so, like it or not, to them you are their famiy.

I don't refer to myself as my dog's mummy but other people do and it doesn't bother me. My nephews and niece refer to him as their cousin. But then one lot of nephews and niece also refer to the family tortoise as the oldest brother Grin

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 18/04/2012 11:24

I know it doesn't Panda but, irrationally, I can't help feeling that it does.

My mum sends my dogs birthday and christmas presents signed 'lots of love Nanny and Grandad' :o

PandaWatch · 18/04/2012 11:30

Well next time someone refers to you as your dog's mummy try saying, completely poker-faced, that you would never try to replace your dog's birth mother and that you find the suggestion you would offensive both to you and your dog. That should shut them up! Grin

Kladdkaka · 18/04/2012 11:32

Or put on your best chav accent and say 'You calling me a dog?'

boringnickname · 18/04/2012 11:33

What are you then? his owner??

boringnickname · 18/04/2012 11:34

I mean really - he has a toilet accident, you clean it up, you discipline him, feed him, keep him safe, worry about him, have cuddles and nice walks with him - of COURSE you are his mummy! sheeessh

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 18/04/2012 11:35

:o love the suggestions :o

"You callin me a dog? I ain't even a dog though."

YANBU.

I think it is that type of relationship though - you scold you dog when its good, reward it when its bad. If you get the dog as a puppy, you raise it to adulthood (except it never leaves home!)

So I can see where it comes from, but I still think its a bit cringeworthy.

wildfig · 18/04/2012 12:13

I would love to know what my dogs think my role is in their life. 'Attendant' is probably the most polite description.

technoduck · 18/04/2012 12:18

Ive got a 13 week old puppy and shes my baby, only had her a couple of weeks so she still needs a mummy.

CheerMum · 18/04/2012 12:23

My dog thinks that his role in life is to produce methane gas Grin

My dd is my baby girl and I am her Mummy
My ddog is my baby boy and I am his Mummy (and DH is Daddy and dd is Sissy). I get valentines, mothers day, christmas and birthday cards and gifts.

Dd is 10 and only allows cuddles every now and then.
Ddog is an 8 stone rottweiller but always allows kisses and cuddles - I even wiped his nose this morning as it was runny!

But YANBU, your family = your title choices

LittleMissMcFartyPants · 18/04/2012 12:28

I get flowers off fartydog for mothers day Blush

Is foster mum ok? Grin

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 18/04/2012 12:31

Hmph, I suppose I might be able to just about tolerate foster mum.
