I'm sure a lot of you will know but many wont, that the laws surrounding cosmetics being tested on animals are still worryingly loose. Lush cosmetics are leading a new campaign to get this sorted. Have a look at the site and if you feel compelled to do so, please sign the petition. More needs to be done.

Many thanks

do you know what fucks me right off about that....the fact that they symbolise animal testing with a conical flask.

that is a symbol of scientific/chemical testing which is actually the obvious ALTERNATIVE to animal testing.

but yeah just keep jamming in the 'evil scientist' stereotype why not...

PeppaTwig · 17/04/2012 13:27

I see your point. It's unfortunate to say the least but you have a voice to speak out about your objections on that (and I'm sure they would be interested to hear them).

The animals do not.

I am bitter due to having to go to work through an animal rights demo and getting abuse hurled at me when I was in fact working on science aimed at replacing animal models with synthetic based 3D tissue culture.

At least some of the animal testing currently being done is aimed at massively reducing animal use in the future.

But this has nothing to do with this campaign which is aimed at the cosmetics industry who contribute nothing useful to society and in fact do a great deal of damage to a lot peoples self esteem.

entropygirl · 17/04/2012 13:35

I just reread that and it sounds like I have participated in animal testing - I have not. Our system was entirely animal free and 100% synthetic.

I did once see someone kill a mouse though...

Paiviaso · 17/04/2012 15:22

The petition says: ?I believe that animals shouldn?t suffer and die to test cosmetics or their ingredients. All cosmetics should be cruelty-free and I support a ban on cosmetics animal testing and on the sale of new cosmetics that have been tested on animals.?

This is already illegal in the UK, and in the EU. I looked through the website and mostly just ended up reading about why Lush thinks Lush is awesome. Besides this being one big advertisement for Lush, what are they actually doing, and who is this petition aimed at?

PlinkPaSta · 17/04/2012 15:42

My biggest concern atm is the amount of cleaning products tested on animals and that Tesco is the only supermarket operating in Britain whose own brand products are completely free from animal testing.

I don't know Lush but if they are under the arm of certain large companies they are still attached to animal testing.

There's a lot of financial gain for the UK government to allow animal testing in the UK. I'm too jaded to think anything will change. I'm not an activist, I just shop wisely.

AutumnSummers · 17/04/2012 16:12

YABU. I don't want my attention drawn to inflammatory bullshit.

Debsbear · 17/04/2012 16:14

Not commenting on th epetition as such because i haven't read it yet, but Lush are sooooo Lush! Grin

PeppaTwig · 17/04/2012 17:44

Paiviaso... I'm afraid it isn't illegal in the UK and EU. This petition is to try and make that happen.
Plink... Lush don't fall any other larger companies however they run the risk of having to adhere to global governing bodies who insist on animal testing in certain situations. Something they are passionate in avoiding. Compare this to the body shop who proudly display the cruelty free bunny logo but actually belong to the L'Oreal chain who are one of the biggest culprits of animal testing.
I'll shut up now. Can't please every one.

Totally am not connected to lush (can see why you might think that though). Sorry, do what you need to do. :(

TheMonster · 17/04/2012 17:55

That came up on my FB today (because I have Lush updates) and I signed it and shared it.

TheMonster · 17/04/2012 17:57

I don't see why anyone would think you are connected to Lush. Anyone who shops in Lush regularly knows their ethics.

PeppaTwig · 17/04/2012 17:57

Yay Eyeore! Well done for not missing the point! Grin

OP posts:
SarahDoctorIndyHouse · 17/04/2012 17:59

Just to clarify...I am not saying Lush are right or wrong or anything else, just that this MIGHT be a mole-ish advert for them.

As you were.

SarahDoctorIndyHouse · 17/04/2012 18:00

And I NEVER miss the point Grin

PeppaTwig · 17/04/2012 18:04

I'm a regular (ish) poster, music teacher from Hampshire if you must know! My previous posts will confirm this...
Oh and I do t believe animal testing is necessary in any shape or form!

dont damnit!!!

Infuriating isn't it when bad things happen to good points Wink

PlinkPaSta · 17/04/2012 18:22

Peppa, The bad ethics of the body shop is exactly why I'm jaded with all this.
Thanks for clarifying lush's position though, I'll go and have a proper look at the company.
As you know what you're talking about, I'll say YANBU :o

entropygirl · 17/04/2012 22:18

hmmm so animal testing of cosmetics is banned in the UK. I guess that this is different from saying that products which have been tested on animals are banned in the UK. So l'oreal can test in France and then import to the UK?

makes fuck all difference to me as I don't think animal testing is even close to being the most evil thing done by the cosmetics industry...I am just trying to understand why what should be a straight forward fact seems to be muddled up.

blapbird · 17/04/2012 22:24

A friend of mine (aged 20) is in Jail for demonstrating against animal testing, she isn't violent just very clued up and intelligent and a true activist, she is still serving her sentence now, it is very sad but big drugs/cosmetics companies are EXTREMELY powerful, I beleive the only way to stop this is, to stop creating a demand.

sashh · 18/04/2012 06:51

It is completely pointless banning animal testing in the UK/EU when other countries demand animal testing.

So although lush do not test on animals in the EU if they want to export to China (and others) then the products they know are safe have to be tested on animals.

Paiviaso · 18/04/2012 10:58

PeppaPig, it states right here on the European Comission Affairs Website ec.europa.eu/consumers/sectors/cosmetics/animal-testing/index_en.htm that:

"The testing ban on finished cosmetic products applies since 11 September 2004; the testing ban on ingredients or combination of ingredients applies since 11 March 2009. The marketing ban applies since 11 March 2009."

And according to the RSPCA, "The RSPCA has campaigned long and hard to end the use of animals in cosmetics testing. In the UK, we welcomed the government‟s announcement in 1997 of a ban on the use of animals to test cosmetic products, and on cosmetics ingredients in 1998."

So why are you telling me its not banned?
