to not understand why people buy this cheese?

My fridge currently smells like the toilets in a cheap nightclub, after a bout of D&V has made its way through the patrons. I blame DH's stilton, camembert and unnamed holey cheese. Urgh. It makes me want to vomit every time I open the fridge (not to the extent of actually losing weight though)

I love stinky cheese. Especially French cheeses - faves being blue d'auvergne and cantal.

But this thread reminds me of an old MN thread where someone bought home some very ripe cheese from France - when they opened it after they had drove back from France it was heaving with cheese mites

Hecate if you think cheddar is tasteless you need to try Godminster. The proper stuff, I mean.

DP and I bought about 100 grams of that once and nibbled it on a walk home and had to stop due to Massive Cheese Hangover.

Oh a nice blue cheese it the best.

I'm not eating cheese at the moment due to the fact I'm turning into a fatty bum bum and it's The Cheeses fault i tell you.

StealthPolarBear are you blaming The Cheese for the D&V? or is it the smell bothering you after the D&V?

Get him to stick it into on of those clippable tubberware container thingies and stick a small bowl of bread soda in your fridge maybe?

JustHecate · 16/04/2012 20:24

Never tried that, RP - is it good?

I can't believe nobody has commented on my link Grin

But which cheese is the problem? Holey cheese like emmenthal is not very stinky at all, it's creamy and nutty. If the camembert is stinky it is probably OTT. It should have no ammonia smell whatsoever. It can be a bit farmyard-y if it is unpasteurised -- think cows and grass. But any ammonia pong - chuck it.

JustHecate it's because I'm trying to forget I ever read it...

I like a nice bit of Camembert and don't mind slightly stinky cheese but I really can't be doing with the blue stuff. DH has it as an occasional treat but he has it to himself. He once persuaded me to try a bit of Roquefort because he insisted it was so lovely I really must give it a chance.

Bleugh!! Spitting it out wasn't good enough I had to go and wash my tongue.

Mind you - once on our early married life I wanted to cook him a special meal for his birthday. He isn't really a pudding man so for a dessert I did him grapes stuffed with Stilton. I had to force horrid smelly Stilton through a sieve to make it creamy; then carefully slit open and de-seed the grapes before piping the Stilton inside and finally rolling the finished items in finely choped nuts. Took me ages and really turned my stomach but I did it. How's that for romance!

We too once bought a beautiful small whole cheese back from france - Pavé d'Affinois, really creamy and lovely. (kept in a cool bag, btw) We started eating it a day or so later but then found that it was crawling with bloody hugemaggots. Haven't touched that particular cheese since. The stinkiest cheeses seem to be ones from Northern France, like Livarot or Époisses. We had bought some of those back once and were stopped by a customs officer who asked us to open the boot. The poor man absolutely REELED back, coughing and spluttering. They are eye-watering.

Casu Marzu Envy Envy Envy < definitely NOT envy face

I had forgotten all about halloumi and mozzarella. I'm not as dull as I thought. I'm practically witty, urbane and wordly!

AmberLeaf · 16/04/2012 22:33

Casu Marzu OMFG! No I draw the line at that, I watched a programme where they showed that and I was very nearly sick.

Just wrong
