AIBU to think that our environmental awareness seems to go by the board

where children's toys are concerned.

I am guilty myself so I am not being judgemental but I am thinking that we should collectively be more responsible. I use my recycling bag when I shop and I cycle or walk my children to school, I try to reduce water and energy waste in the home BUT my house is full of plastic crap toys.

Aibu to think that we should totally stop buying plastic toys and stick to environmentally friendly ones even if it means our kids will have far less of them. And should we ask grandparents etc to stop too.

As for plastic toys, im not going to stop buying dcs what they have asked for at Xmas (within reason) just because its not environmentally friendly. If you want to moan about toys maybe you could direct it at the bloody endless packaging it comes it

Mosschops, no offence, but attitude like this are the reason why no one takes any responsibility for any kind of environmental damage. Have you considered that because of the demand you and your DCs create, the stuff is produced in the first place? It's like when people refuse to try and conserve water because water companies haven't fixed leaks. Or they refuse to try and save energy, because China has lots of power stations. And as for the phrase "just because it is not environmentally friendly", well you and your children are part of the environment. It is not some separate thing which you don't need to worry about as long as you have your John Lewis dress (and by the way, you don't need to take your Asda bag to JL you know. There are plenty of naice bags out there if you are concerned about it.)

Why are you not going to stop moss? It's a very short sighted view and the people that will suffer most (apart from the wildlife) are your own children.

moss
Also i am no way environmentally friendly as I said in my own post and I do not live in Wales BUT I have a lovely big bag I bought for shopping. It's Vair pretty indeed and I do all my shopping clothes included without feeling the need to a plastic bag!
And John Lewis bags are hardly beautiful are they, green basic plastic!

helloclitty (great name Grin) looks like i will have to buy a naice reuseable bag.

ariel no i dont really care about the wildlife, i have 3 dcs and a busy job where i see all sorts, whether badgers survive is the least of my worries
I dont think anything has changed in 30 years, just look at the argos catalogue from the 80s.

I spend oodles of time splitting stuff into 4 different collections for the refuse, im convinced it all goes to the same bloody place.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 09/04/2012 16:14

ariel no i dont really care about the wildlife, i have 3 dcs and a busy job where i see all sorts, whether badgers survive is the least of my worries

Fucking lovely. No wonder the world is so fucked up. What a lovely attitude to pass onto your children.

mosschops30 · 09/04/2012 16:15

Absolutely the world is fucked up because people buy their children plastic toys.

Get a grip on reality please, the world is fucked up for far worse reaons!

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 09/04/2012 16:17

No, and stop deliberately misunderstanding me. I was referring to your sentence above. The world is fucked up because people refuse to care about anything beyond their children and their job and don't capable of understanding that they don't live in a little bubble and things are in fact linked.

helloclitty · 09/04/2012 17:11

no i dont really care about the wildlife, i have 3 dcs and a busy job where i see all sorts, whether badgers survive is the least of my worries

The problem is there are wider consequences to fish and birds dying or ingesting plastics. Consequences that your children or their children will have to deal with.

YANBU helloclitty.

I cared about the environment before I had a child, I care about it even more now. Amongst all the other things that I care about in this 'fucked up' world.

McHappyPants2012 · 09/04/2012 20:14

children toys are often reused by other siblings, sold or passed down.

plastic is easy to clean and generally last.

i think other areas should be looked at, such as pop bottles. Glass is 100% recyclable and the packagine of food ect.

MadameBoolala · 09/04/2012 20:18
Hmm

arse.

LumpyLatimer · 09/04/2012 20:28

Did someone just openly say they don't care about wildlife?! Shock

Don't think I've ever heard someone actually say that. I mean - what on earth (literally!) do you think you're passing on to your children to inherit?!

This reminds me of the invisibility field in the Terry Pratchett books. The SEP field. It's always Someone Else's Problem...which means no-one can see it Sad

I agree with the OP and Ariel and helloclitty obvs!

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 09/04/2012 20:38

I think she thinks she is being refreshingly and bluntly honest and no nonsense, and is only saying what loads of people think anyway.

mosschops30 · 09/04/2012 20:59

Nope i absolutely dont care about wildlife.

I have nursed ITU patients who are obese, have drink/drug problems, have had catastrophic haemorrages, have ended up dying after doing a good deed, have been assaulted, have cancer

I could go on but i wont bore you with why i couldnt give a flying you know what about wildlife. I see horrendous things and maybe if you lived in the real world instead of knitting a cardigan out of your own hair you wouldnt be that bothered about badgers and squirrels either.

And yes i sm just saying what most people think

MadameBoolala · 09/04/2012 21:19

Mosschops, in my career I have worked with children who have been abused, children who are dying and have died, and their families.

I still care about wildlife. Caring about people and caring about animals and the environment aren't mutually exclusive!

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 09/04/2012 21:20

Your argument is nonsense. Utter nonsense. You think that because you are a nurse then you can't care about other stuff too? Well done for being a nurse and all that. My mother is a nurse - she finds it within herself to care about all sorts of other things as well. This does not make her a saint. It just makes her normal.

You are not saying what most people think. You merely sound selfish and blinkered.

MadameBoolala · 09/04/2012 21:20

ooh, it's dead soft and silky, this.

mosschops30 · 09/04/2012 21:23

I care about lots of things, wildlife isnt one of them.

Selfish and blinkered? Meh!

SuePoiblybilt · 09/04/2012 21:27

You can be forgiven for thinking that worrying about the children you work with trumps worrying about individual badgers mosschops - I do see what you mean.
But the bigger picture is that if, for example, the entire species of badgers is wiped out - we just don't know what will happen. Every part of nature is connected - what if badger poo was the host to an insect that had evolved to only live there? Then curtains for badgers is curtains for Poo beetle. No big loss? What if poo beetle was the only natural prey to a particularly nasty biting parasite, one that carried disease? Or the only pollinator for the kind of apples that grow in our climate?

I don't think you can just say 'I don't care' if you think about it, nobody can. Because you can't be sure what you're not caring about.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 09/04/2012 21:30

But who the fuck has mentioned badgers specifically?????

Thank you sue. You said what I was trying to say.

Well, this thread has made me think. Second time tonight, do stop it MN.
There IS too much coloured plastic in my house. Lots of it secondhand, but lots of it not. I will attempt to think a bit harder in future.

I did laugh out loud at "knitting a cardigan out of your own hair" though Blush
