You know...all that competative posting and showing off stuff?Another thread got me thinking....all of the extroverts that I know are prolific "sharers" of their stuff...dinners, nails, kids, new clothing...what say you?

HalfPastWine · 08/04/2012 21:48

I agree but then I hate Facebook !

Sparklingbrook · 08/04/2012 21:48

I would say so. This is why I don't have FB.

WorraLiberty · 08/04/2012 21:49

I see it totally the other way around...I think they're very boring.

I've got some brilliantly witty/intelligent people on my Facebook that don't just make me laugh, but they often give me food for thought.

The prolific sharers of dinner pics, nails, kids last shit, new clothes, Husband being wonderful for making a cup of tea, endless photos of cupcakes....

Well they're as boring as fuck to be honest...not extrovert at all.

Ragwort · 08/04/2012 21:50

I'm another one who doesn't see the need for FB (did anyone see the article about it in the Telegraph yesterday Wink?) - makes me glad I don't bother with it Grin.

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 08/04/2012 21:51

I don't want to knock it...I love a perve on other people;s lives...but isn't it funny? It could have gone the other way...introverts could display their lives without actually DOING it iyswim.

OP posts:
Kayano · 08/04/2012 21:51

Depends how you use it.

I use it how I like to post endless pics of myself in a boob tube with pouty lips

disclaimer that is a lie

And you can use it how you like

And me and worra can both bang our heads on our desks and say 'what does it even matter?!' if you don't like it or certain users... Don't use it or block them

And don't moan about it here cos it is a total pet hate of mine

Tee2072 · 08/04/2012 21:51

I'm an introvert. I love Facebook because it means I don't have to actually talk to real live people to keep my family up to date on my life.

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 08/04/2012 21:53

Worra that's an interestng take on it...I wonder...I DO like it because it keeps me in touch with friends far away...but I'm an introvert and very rarely post...so I suppose I'm going on me a lot.

OP posts:
Babylon1 · 08/04/2012 21:54

I have a Facebook and I love checking out other peoples pages, but I very rarely post anything on my own page! I can't imagine why anyone would be interested in the colour of my socks etc!!!

I do like a good nosey around others tho!!!!

2ombie5layer · 08/04/2012 21:55

I often wonder if those that post all the time on FB have a great life so have lots to share or have no life therefore more time for being on FB. not mentioning anything about those including myself who spend a bit of time on MN

To me all these bragging pictures are just boring and I just ignore all pictures. I hardly ever see notice them let alone click on the videos where their PFB is now crawling/sitting/talking or whatever.

I understand though that lots of people use FB as a means to communicate to family members and close friends that they hardly ever see due to distance, but there does seem to be a lot of boasty stuff on there too. I actually ditched a friend as she was always boasting about how much she made on ebay (usually buying things in sale for 50p and selling them on for near enough full price)

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 08/04/2012 21:55

Kayano I'm not moaning! I said how I like it for perving purposes.

Tee Do you post pics of your recent purchases or flowers you've been sent?

OP posts:
pointythings · 08/04/2012 21:56

I think FB is a tool like any other - you can use it to let the world know every time you've farted, or you can use it to keep in touch with family all over the world, plan holiday meets with the children of other working mums, manage the schedule of one's hobbies, arrange dinners and BBQs. The messaging thing works really well, and people who don't always check their emails do tend to check their FB accounts.

FWIW I have the most restrictive privacy settings possible and very few friends, but within those limitations I find it enjoyable and useful. I'm an extreme extrovert, but I'm also a geek.

HalfPastWine · 08/04/2012 21:56

I hate it when I meet someone new and they say ' Are you on Facebook' and then give me the Confused look when I say no.

manicbmc · 08/04/2012 21:57

Posting a picture of my latest baking exploits has become a bit of a Friday ritual on fb. Grin

I'm a bit of an introvert really and don't mix well in large groups. Fb means I can take my time to respond to things and, generally, don't end up coming across as a stuttering arse.

HalfPastWine · 08/04/2012 21:58

Maybe I need to get on there and have a snoop Grin

Can people tell if you've been looking at their page/profile?

blapbird · 08/04/2012 21:59

I go through phases of liking it and not, my family are all very dispersed in various places round the world and having lived abroad myself, friends are too. I like being able to keep that thread of contact without having to send great big emails.

I used to, when it first came out, say whatever was on my mind and perhaps made myself more vulnerable, now I very rarely write status updates because over time all these 'do's and don't's have emerged.

I can't stand loads of things people write, especially when they're really obviously courting praise/respect/the envy of others.
Or when they write passive aggressive status' 'I know real friends will repost this' blah blah help for heroes'

On balance I think, like any thing, if it's used appropriately and not as a replacement for social interaction in real life it's harmless.

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 08/04/2012 22:00

HalfPast People do that to me when I tell them no...I don't have a mobile phone. Grin

Manic see thats not a bother to me...it's when people put the meal they've been served in a restaurant that bugs me. Don't you ever think though...who wants to see my pie if they can't have a slice?

OP posts:
AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 08/04/2012 22:01

Wine No! but many are private so you wont be able to see unless you "friend" them.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 08/04/2012 22:01

And me and worra can both bang our heads on our desks and say 'what does it even matter?!' if you don't like it or certain users...Don't use it or block them

That's so true Kayano Grin

What's annoying me at the moment (YY one of many things!) is that a lot of MNetters are using Facebook 'statuses' to start controversial/racist/anti disabled/etc threads.

There seem to be more and more "Ohh guess what I just read on Facebook, AIBU to think it's disgusting?"

When it's quit obvious they just want to start a thread that's going to kick off.

Until recently it was always 'FIL' or 'MIL' who apparently said shocking things to cause a bun fight Grin

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 08/04/2012 22:02

blapbird Yes! I just ignore those...the ones about real friends I mean. Anyone who knows me properly would know that I just wouldn't!

OP posts:
manicbmc · 08/04/2012 22:03

I post cake to taunt people. Grin

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 08/04/2012 22:04

Worra yes...I see that now you've pointed it out. It's like regurgitating other peoples vomit isn't it?

OP posts:
BubbleBobble · 08/04/2012 22:04

Not at all, I'm an introvert and I use it to keep connected to people without having to go through the agony (for me) of face-to-face contact. It stops me from being the awkward one in the corner who is stuck for things to say.

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 08/04/2012 22:04

Manic is it homebaked cake? Or Mr Kiplings?

OP posts:
ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 08/04/2012 22:07

Yes but you don't HAVE to act like that on FB. It's not compulsory.

I love it as it's a good way of keeping in touch with old friends and people I don't see much. Anyone who writes drivel like that gets hidden or defriended.
