To think that if a poster writes they have cramps, telling then to take a pill and get on with it is not nice.

When I was younger I suffered from terrible cramps when I had my period to the extent I was often in bed for three days, pain killers did not help unless they were very strong and prescribed for something else, now neuferon sometimes helps but not always.

I also suffer from IBS and half in the past had terrible stomach cramps again pain killers do not help. Many times I have read threads where people have told an OP to just take a tablet and get on wioth it and it really annoys me.

When I was a teenager most of my friends didn't understand what I went through every month so I understand why people may think popping a pill might solve the problem. I just would like people to think before they post before telling someone to pop a pill.

I think you should raise it on the original threads tbh.

Jinsei · 06/04/2012 19:03

Period pain can be dire. I used to find that painkillers would help if I took them early enough, but if I missed the "window", nothing would help. Also, paracetomol had no effect - had to be ibuprofen.

Gin & tonic was also surprisingly effective. Wink

I think people are just trying to help tbh. If they have never had bad cramps, they won't understand.

SuePurblybiltFromChocolate · 06/04/2012 19:03

Which threads? I've never seen this.

SparkyMcSparrowLaidMiniEggs · 06/04/2012 19:11

Maybe you should 'pop a pill' OP [buwink]

Pinkiemum · 06/04/2012 19:13

It has stuck in my head from over a week ago and I am not going to try and find the the threads as some of them goes back weeks. Wanted to get it out of my system I know this AIBU but I sometime think some of what I read is just plain nasty and wanted to get it out of my head.

Probably if I had commented at the time I would have been quite rude myself as it made me angry that such a rude comment was made to someone who was suffering, so would rather not comment than be rude to someone.

Have you ever tried just taking a pill and getting on with it? I've read on here it works.

NurseJennyLee · 06/04/2012 19:21

Are you the OP of that other thread op? [buhmm]

LentillyFart · 06/04/2012 19:22

Hey OP - I've heard that, you know, like, pain killers are really helpful when you have cramps. Have you tried them?

SuePurblybiltFromChocolate · 06/04/2012 19:26

Now did you all think before posting that? Did you?

RuleBritannia · 06/04/2012 19:30

Jinsei is right. Cramps can be less painful or even painless if you take quinine I do for night cramps. Natural quinine can be found in tonic water. Quinine tablets might well have to be on prescription though mine are.

Pinkiemum · 06/04/2012 19:37

No I am not the OP of the other thread, as I stated I have taken pain killers for my period cramps and they did nothing for mr, even one that that were prescribed by the gynaecologist, so sorry pain killers do not always work, which was the point of my post.

Yabu. Keeping active was another thing I was told to do sometimes it works, sometimes not but I would still recommend it.

ErikNorseman · 06/04/2012 20:23

YABU
It is perfectly reasonable advice!

scuzy · 06/04/2012 20:46

do whatever you want, pop a pill, exercise, stay in bed and moan, but basically its every month so yeah... in as nice as possible way ... get on with it.

LeBOF · 06/04/2012 20:49

I would always advise getting a small devoted spaniel to lie on your lap, and a pleasant teenager to bring you hot drinks.

SuePurblybiltFromChocolate · 06/04/2012 20:50

Are they available on prescription?

LeBOF · 06/04/2012 20:50

(Oh, and try to squeeze out a fart- you can always blame the dog.)

LeBOF · 06/04/2012 20:51

I think you can apply to Pets As Therapy, Sue.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 06/04/2012 20:54

Depends.
Sometimes if you are having moderate cramps and are feeling like you are ill but you are not (IYSWIM) a brisk 'take a tablet and go for a walk' can help to snap you out of it.
BUT
If you are having really awful cramps due to periods or IBS then YANBU because if all it took was a couple of paracetamol there wouldnt be a problem.

I am nearly 45 and have been through the whole range of periods from barely there to excruitating.

When they are bad they are fecking awful.

IAmBooyhoo · 06/04/2012 20:56

i dont get it.

someone asked for advice, someone posted a suggestion. for you that suggestion doesn't work. fine, so dont take that advice but for others it is a perfectly valid solutio to tehir problems. should people refrain from posting advice incase their advice doesn't suit someone else who might happen upon a thread? Confused

Jinsei · 06/04/2012 20:59

rule how interesting. I never knew why G&T worked so well!

DoomCatsofCognitiveDissonance · 06/04/2012 20:59

Sometimes people post because they're worried something is (medically) wrong. If you've never had bad cramps, it could be quite scary and it might be reassuring to know it may not be a medical problem. So I'm not sure whhy 'take a pill and get on with it' is bad advice?

As someone else said - take it up on the thread, it's rude to raise it off-thread.

LingDiLong · 06/04/2012 21:00

Oh come on OP, there was a lot more to that thread than you're implying here. The pain the OP on that thread was in increased in relation to how many people told her she was being unreasonable!!

People weren't being nice to her because she was being pretty unpleasant herself. If her response had been more reasonable and measured she'd have had a lot more sympathy.

CrystalMaize · 06/04/2012 21:14

I think you should raise it with said poster.

fuzzpig · 06/04/2012 21:31

What is the original thread please?
