to wonder whether On the Buses should still be allowed on the television?

DGM is watching ITV's British comedy 'celebration' [buhmm] We currently have On the Buses on the television. DSis and I are agog that it is sooooo sexist. Obviously we know that in a bygone era this type of comedy was the norm, but is it really appropriate for 2012?

I think I probably ABU as DGM is quite happy, and obviously enjoys the nostalgia...

Yes it is pretty awful.

And it may be responsible for the continued belief by some ugly, middle aged, grey-haired men with teeth that would frighten a yeti, who still live with their mum, that attractive scantily dressed young ladies find them irresistible.

However I love quite like Carry Ons, so I fear your suggested ban might extend to them, as they are much the same.

YABU. On the Buses was filmed around 40 years ago. Different times. I love it. Got DVD's of the films. Holiday on the Buses is my favourite.

Mrsjay · 06/04/2012 18:21

Im sort of on the fence too I guess its comedy of old and people still find it funny , i do like a bit of oooooooooo matron myself Grin carry on is very sexist . at least they dont show love thy neighbour anymore Shock

GreenEyesAndHam · 06/04/2012 18:24

God OTB was shite.

I thought it was shite even as a child. Even as a nipper, I 'got' that there was no way on this earth that those two fellas would have been able to pull attractive young women. No matter how many free bus rides they had to offer Hmm

BelleDameSansMerci · 06/04/2012 18:25

It was awful at the time and it still is, IMO... But I like the Carry On films too especially Carry On Up The Khyber

mummytime · 06/04/2012 18:44

It always was awful, but we also had Benny Hill then. Maybe that's why I'm more feminist than my nieces?

OldGreyWiffleTest · 06/04/2012 18:51

How did I know from the title that this was going to be another 'ist' thread! Get over it, if you don't like it then don't watch it. End of.

MargueritaaPracatan · 06/04/2012 18:57

Oh I LOVE 'On The Buses' - as does DS1. I adore all the 70s politically incorrect comedies. Are they going to show the Bless This House film? I hope so!

EightiesEasterChick · 06/04/2012 18:59

It is interesting, actually, that we still get OTB but not Benny Hill (whose stuff was incredibly commercially successful). I don't really like either on feminist grounds but it's a useful tool to show how far we've come. Or not.. TBH you could argue for it to be taken off on the grounds of crapness without even having to take up arguments about offensiveness. It is desperately unfunny. And yes, get real with the notion that any young attractive woman is going to touch old sideburne bus conductors with a bargepole!

Nancy66 · 06/04/2012 19:01

..i like the way everyone spat out their tea when somebody said anything vaguely shocking.

MargueritaaPracatan · 06/04/2012 19:01

It just harks back to a simpler (or so it seemed) time, just harmless nostalgia that hurts no-one.

EightiesEasterChick · 06/04/2012 19:02

Margueritaa The Likely Lads film was on earlier. Now that's class.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 06/04/2012 19:02

I loved OTB - can't wait to get TIVO so I can get stuff like this :) I do watch it with a face like this >>> Shock now, but it's still funny in a '70's way Grin

EightiesEasterChick · 06/04/2012 19:04

I'm not sure the 70s was a simpler time. In many ways it feels a bit like we're back there now. But yep I can see the nostalgia thing. I actually think the Carry Ons, for instance, are often funny, whereas I have rarely raised a chuckle at OTB. But ITV3 show it constantly so there is clearly an audience...

MargueritaaPracatan · 06/04/2012 19:06

I was never really into the Likely Lads, Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement are great writers but not my bag, along with Carla Lane (though I did like Solo and Butterflies)

cocoachannel · 06/04/2012 19:08

OldGrey, I didn't choose to watch it. Am spending time with GM and she had it on!

I'm in Holiday on the buses!

I was four and i ran round the corner and bumped into someone and shouted 'eeeee, its Blakey'

apparently he ws so chuffed that someone so small recognised him, he bought me nan and grandad drinks all night!

MargueritaaPracatan · 06/04/2012 19:09

Now THAT is a claim to fame!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 06/04/2012 19:10

Its a load of old toss.
Ugly men and blousy, giggling women acting like they left their brain cells at the bus stop.

Bleugh.

TwoIfBySea · 06/04/2012 19:11

I was only little when OTB was on but those two men used to creep me out something awful. Just couldn't bring myself to watch it even though I used to laugh at Benny Hill and Carry On films.

whatsallthefuss · 06/04/2012 19:11

i might add that DD and DH have just settled down to watch carry on camping, and are heartily laughing and it hasnt even started yet!

MargueritaaPracatan · 06/04/2012 19:12

Compared to what's on the old box nowadays it's telly gold. I won't even have ITV on any more.

Angiefernackerpan · 06/04/2012 19:12

My dad once told me I look like Olive from On The Buses, now if I see it's on I feel like a little cry and a paper bag over my head.

cocoachannel · 06/04/2012 19:14

We studied the Likely Lads on my English degree. One of the Professors was a fan. Can't remember the exact course but also studied 'The Satanic Verses', 'My Beautiful Laundrette' and 'Oranges are not the Only Fruit' on the module so must have been something to do with evolving attitudes/ culture.

As a child I liked Butterflies and Bread. Even then hated Last of the Simmer Eine and Dad's Army.

I like the episode where they have to look after the fish whilst Blakey was away.
