DGM is watching ITV's British comedy 'celebration' [buhmm] We currently have On the Buses on the television. DSis and I are agog that it is sooooo sexist. Obviously we know that in a bygone era this type of comedy was the norm, but is it really appropriate for 2012?

I think I probably ABU as DGM is quite happy, and obviously enjoys the nostalgia...

Steptoe and Son used to upset me as a child.
I thought they were really poor and it made me sad.

maras2 · 06/04/2012 20:52

MargPrak. Love your name. Was Paul thingy the hairdresser?(not gay)

crazynanna · 06/04/2012 20:57

Love/d it! "I 'ate you,Butler!" Grin

Steptoe was just brilliant.

Open all Hours' was genious.

They don't make 'em like that anymore

EightiesEasterChick · 06/04/2012 21:02

ODAMDV yes, up till they get married men are gagging for it and women want to avoid it at every possible opportunity. After marriage, wives always up for it, men scared and shrivelled Grin

harbingerofdoom · 06/04/2012 21:02

On the Buses was awful. I couldn't even stand it as a child. The Carry on films however are classics as are those films with James Robertson Justice (Doctor), loved them, just brilliant.
The same goes for those saucy postcards (McGill?) as kids we would spend hours reading them (or till the shop owner noticed us). Postcards and Carry On didn't have the sleazy feel of On the Buses.

WestYorkshirePudding · 06/04/2012 21:14

Damn, I missed On the Buses earlier and I do like a good old sexist British film Grin

I'm currently sat watching Carry on Camping and love the fact it's so un-PC. Films and TV today are so ridiculously PC it makes me mad, what's wrong with a bit of old-fashioned sexism now and then?

Bogeyface · 06/04/2012 21:35

"Sleazy", describes OTB perfectly.

I remember mind your language too, that was awful. STBX is black and said that Love Thy Neighbour never bothered him or his family as the black guy always won the argument and the white bloke just looked stupid. He said that many people just remember the racism but they forget that the racist white guy was always protrayed negatively and that even his own wife thought he was a total knob.

FreudianSlipper · 06/04/2012 21:44

The Goodies was hilarious to me as a child, we have a cinny film (before video camera for those born after the 70's) of my cousin and I watching it rolling about on the floor laughing. having seen it again recently i think the film of us is funnier

i may get it for ds i am sure he will find it as funny as we did

GwendolineMaryMagdaleneLacey · 06/04/2012 21:52

I love OTB

Great scene when Olive is changing the baby's nappy and she hands her miserable husband the used one. He said "that's disgusting". She said "you didn't say that when you were taking your pleasure". He replies "I did"

He was so horrible to her!

Bogeyface · 06/04/2012 22:01

How on earth did she get PG?! "Arfur" would never go near her! He was absolutely vile to her, and threatened violence on more than one occasion, thats why I wont have the re-runs on.

I dont give a toss about the sexism, but the abusive language and behaviour and her pussyfooting around desperate for some love from him makes me feel very uncomfortable.

FreudianSlipper · 06/04/2012 22:40

i agree bogey

its a good insight to how abusive realtionships often are :(

MrsBeakman · 06/04/2012 22:54

He does seem to hate her doesn't he. In Carry On and OTB, all married women are overweight and unattractive and a millstone around their husbands necks and all unmarried young girls are sexy.

Anyone remember American sitcom Married With Children. Al Bundy would do anything to avoid having sex with his wife Peggy and that comedy ran from "87 to "97.

Mrsjay · 07/04/2012 09:57

oh yes mind your language it had various IST in it racists sexist i didnt really like it it wasnt that funny even for back then ,

Mrsjay · 07/04/2012 09:58

Al bundy is now in modern Familiy it took me a while not to look for his wife peggy when i first started watching it ,,

KenDoddsDadsDog · 07/04/2012 10:01

Love Carry On. Used to be scared of OTB bloke when I was little so have never really watched.

Aboutlastnight · 07/04/2012 10:11

Steptoe and Son had a sadness to it, it's bitter. And I watch it now and it truly is a different world. I loved Porridge and Open All Hours.

As a child I watched all the Carry On films- carry on up the khyber is racist and sexist but there are very funny bits to it. And I always snigger at 'the kharzi'. Also Carry on Cleo ' infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me!' Genius.

CremeEggsandHam · 07/04/2012 10:18

YABVU. On The Buses was filmed in the 70's and marks a different time, but why shouldn't it still be shown now?
It makes a refreshing change to see something on the telly that might be politically incorrect, as you probably wouldn't get away with making stuff like that any more, more's the pity!
It's got a couple of lechy old men in it. So what?! It's harmless gags, nothing more.
Some of the stuff made nowadays is far worse.
I love On The Buses, even got the boxset. Grin

Bogeyface · 07/04/2012 17:23

CremeEggs, and what about the appallingly abusive behaviour of Olives husband? How is that in anyway funny or harmless? It totally legitimises insulting, shouting at, threating, withdrawing affection from and financially controlling ones spouse.

You think that is amusing?

happyinherts · 07/04/2012 17:27

I love on the buses and so does my 17 year old. Haven't seen such comedy in latter years probably because of the PC aspect. Once upon a time we laughed at ourselves, our body image, our personality traits, now we cant.

I think we have established the fact that it's acting and that makes it acceptable to laugh at behaviour we wouldnt agree with in real life. It makes a refreshing change.

Nanny0gg · 07/04/2012 17:38

Doctor in the House and Please Sir!
They were good...

I loathed OTB and anything Benny Hill related.

hackmum · 07/04/2012 19:13

Someone mentioned The Lovers up thread - I looked it up. It was Richard Beckinsale and Paula Wilcox - her first major part, though she's still going strong as the landlady in Sherlock. What a trouper. Amazingly, The Lovers was written by the great Jack Rosenthal (of Barmitzvah Boy fame).

I agree about Steptoe being unbearably sad. I can't watch it.

And agree with Freudian about The Goodies. When I was a kid it was the funniest thing I've ever seen. Remember the news story about the guy who literally died laughing while watching the Ecky Thump dance?

Bogeyface · 07/04/2012 19:20

Do you mean the Sherlock with Benedict thingy bob and Martin...Freeman(?) cos thats Una Stubbs not Paula wilcox!
