currently 37 weeks.. am really not sure how i will manage until my due date.. I've been averaging 3-4 hours sleep during the night for the past week or so, I can't get comfortable in any position, I am actually scared of going to sleep sometimes because i've woken myself up several times by nearly being sick due to acid reflux (am i going to choke to death? Confused ) - i get painful heartburn (no burning sensation just pain - i find it similar to the gallstone attacks i used to get). My back is absolutely killing me and my pelvis is very very painful, I'm shattered all the time due to lack of sleep and to top it all off i'm mostly home alone all day as my husband works full time.. It's my first pregnancy and i am very much looking forward to being a mum i just hate not having any control over my own body and how i feel!
i'm sure a lot of women get fed up with late pregnancy i just feel like it's hit me all at once after 2 uneventful trimesters... It's karma isn't it...
rant over...

Nighty night. I hope you sleep.

JaffaSnaffle · 05/04/2012 23:53

Poor you. I had grim heartburn and reflux. I found raising the head side of the bed helped. My FIL made some little blocks so I slept on a gentle slope. Helped a bit. Just make sure they are sturdy though- would be awful if bed crashed down on one side in the night.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 06/04/2012 00:23

I used to sleep sitting up on the sofa with my legs on the foot stool and a kind of pillow nest arranged around me. And a note on the living room door warning DH that I could and would kill him with the TV remote if he dared to so much as breathe too loudly near me.

He had this habit of creeping down the stairs to find out where I was and then gently poking at me and whispering "Are you alright" in concerned tones.

I was like a woman possessed at this point so the reply would be along the lines of "I was asleep wasn't I? For the first time in bloody hours! So did I look alright, yes I did! Don't you wake me again, ever! It's all-bloody-right for you!"

I was evil, but those times on the sofa were the only times I got any sleep in the last five weeks of pregnancy. I hope you get some rest OP.

differentnameforthis · 06/04/2012 10:53

i get painful heartburn (no burning sensation just pain)

PLEASE get that checked. It could be epi gastric pain & that can be fatal.

I put my back out at around 22 weeks trying to always sleep on my left. You really don't need this at your point of pregnancy. Change positions all night to be comfortable - both sides and back.

sashh · 06/04/2012 12:38

You could ask your doctor about Ranitidine. or buy over the counter as zantac - the prescription stuff is usually double the OTC so as long as you have checked with Dr / pharmacist / midwife you can just take double.

Disclaimer - no idea if it is safe in pregnancy - I would have thought so as all it does is reduce acid in your stomach.

I once went to a hydrotherapy session where a heavily pregnant woman had been sent to basically just float around - the physios had positioned those floaty bendy stick type things around her and basically carried on with their booked in patients

I realise a public pool would probably be too cold and difficult to manouver but how about looking at a local hotel with a pool / jacuzzi - you may need to take a friend to help you in and out.

mythical · 06/04/2012 16:06

I rang the ward to ask about the pain but they didn't seem very concerned and she said it doesn't sound like an "obstetric/midwifery" issue and she would normally advise to see my gp but being bank holiday everywhere's closed. I also mentioned the dark wee i had a couple of days ago (it went away with drinking more water so i assume it was just that - i'm not particularly good with drinking water!)

My next appointment with the midwife is thursday so i will let her know about these symptoms and see what she says.

Sleeping was okay last night but i did wake up several times and couldn't go back to sleep. I didn't get any chest pain though, the glass of milk and crumpets probably helped :) Back pain i get quite constantly now - there isn't a lot i can do about it - i'm just getting used to my back and pelvis hurting all the time

thank you for the suggestion about the pool! i do find water a huge relief and i would have definitely visited my local leisure centre more often if it wasn't under major renovation (pool reopens 2 days before due date...!!) as i don't mind public pools at all. i might try to coax husband into going to the next closest one at some point next week.. :-)

Just trying to keep positive now..still fed up but i want to finish washing the little one's clothes and get everything ready so i can just relax (i can't relax when it's always on my mind!) I've just been too lethargic to think about doing anything else!

Defo try and have a swim - I did it late in pregnancy with DD2 and it was A Slice of Heaven.
TBH in both pregnancies, when it got towards the end I slept much, much better on the settee than I did in the bed.

skybluepearl · 06/04/2012 16:19

About the acid reflux. I had it with my first two prenancies and used to carry a bottle of medicine with me. It was awful and really painful. Towards the end of my second pregnancy I was told by a medic to avoid wheat. It worked!! No bread, no pizza and no cake etc meant no reflux for me. As soon as I endulged, it came back. I went on to have a reflux free and wheat free third pregnancy directly as a result.

skybluepearl · 06/04/2012 16:22

what did I eat instead of wheat? Rice, lots of potatoes, corn flakes etc .. plus the usual veg/fruit and protein.

eggkr · 06/04/2012 16:26

bless! It may well be your gall stones playing up mine did when pg.
Also have you tried Ranatidine rather than crap gaviscon, its brilliant.
I had spd really badly and i did find osteopathy helped lots as did decent pain killers which your dr can prescribe for you.
I couldnt breathe either couldnt even walk the short school run i had to scoot along on my bike.
Baby is only 14 months and ive forgotten about it already.

mythical · 06/04/2012 19:51

Eggkr, i've no galbladder anymore! I did read it somewhere that you can still get attacks though..

OP posts:
eggkr · 06/04/2012 21:22

Really? Wow. Have you tried the ranatidine? Its quite safe ask your gp he prescribed mine,i cant understand why they still faff about with gaviscon tbh.

mythical · 06/04/2012 21:29

Yes i had to have it taken out when i went bright yellow and was sick for about a week non stop :o wouldn't like to repeat that!

I haven't bought anything over the counter yet but i might try and ring my midwife tomorrow to see if i can take anything before i see her on thursday as it really isn't nice :(

I wish I made it as far as 37 weeks, but can sympathise to a certain extent as I was enormous and experiencing similar by 30 weeks - DS was born at 32 weeks at 5lbs 3ozs and I'd put on 35lbs in the last 4 weeks!

featherbag · 06/04/2012 21:37

Meant to say by 31 weeks I was honestly wondering how it was physically possible to go potentially another 10 weeks - turns out it wasn't!

harassedandherbug · 06/04/2012 21:41

I was on crutches with my spd so you have my sympathies. But I went into hospital on crutches, and walked out without them. It was a huuge relief. The doc can prescribe you cocodamol, and a chiropractor was brilliant!

I also really suffered with heartburn, and a great tip I was given was Love Hearts. They really worked.

I also got more sleep after ds3 was born than before.... He's 14wks now Grin

PatronSaintOfDucks · 06/04/2012 21:42

Aaaww, I remember the days. It was hell. I did not dream about holding my baby in my arms, I dreamed about sleeping on my stomach again. Now I am hoping for another baby some day, but trying to figure out how I can ensure that my bump does not grow to the proportions of a zeppelin. Hold on there, mythical, it will be over.

mythical · 06/04/2012 22:02

I do watch those shows sometimes.. "i didn't know i was pregnant.." until they give birth.. IF ONLY!

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 06/04/2012 22:09

mythical - you do have to wonder 'HOW' don't you Grin

Lots of good suggestions, I hope some of them work for you!!

HybridTheory · 06/04/2012 22:19

Get omeprazole - from GP midwife probably won't/can't prescribe it. it is fantastic!

maddening · 06/04/2012 22:31

I was on the sofa for the last month due to spd and heartburn/reflux - more comfy and dps snoring was quieter, could go on laptop at 3am without waking dp and our bathroom is downstairs - it is soon forgotton.

hope it goes quickly for you

eggkr · 06/04/2012 22:33

Op dont wait to see mw ring gp and get a prescription for Omep or Ranatidine (or buy it) Also i read about a ome position you got into and wanted to say that the worst thing you can do for spd is open your legs wide, keep them together as much as poss.

Ther is an irony in that statement somewhere isnt there? Grin

Mummy2FE · 06/04/2012 23:31

I used Ranatadine too- after endless weeks of really struggling with reflux. I sympathise with you. The smell and consistency of Gaviscon sent me sick too.

Ranatadine was given on prescription and made a huge difference immediately. I even took it during labour when the reflux got much worse. Got if off Gp as my Midwife couldn't prescribe anything stronger than Gaviscon apparently.

Best of luck with the birth- I hope it comes soon Wink
