To not want cheap, nasty, Iceland type party food

At my Son's Christening meal?

Yes I probably am being very unreasonable, but Dammit! I am putting a lot of effort into making a nice meal for the family for after DS's christening. Nothing fancy, but decent quality food - Naice Ham, decent beef, salads, posh bread (as opposed to sliced white Wink) etc.

I am already getting a particular brand of beer for one member of the family, another has already mentioned they are quite partial to another brand.

Now, a request has been made for sausage rolls, mini sausages and drumsticks - just the cheapy ones, they won't eat the posh ones.

No one has any 'dietry' requirements, this is all just being fussy. Then someone asked what the kids were going to eat, as most kids aren't like my kids (WTAF? Most kids will eat a ham sandwhich) The only addition I have made for the kids is some Pom Bears (of course) and some fairy cakes.

Am I really being unreasonable?

Dh said he would do sausage rolls but let the dog lick them all first. Then sit with a big smile while they all tucked in.ShockGrin

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 05/04/2012 10:07

How lovely it would be to go to a gathering and not be served sausage rolls nuggets and all that cheap crap that's pretty damn vile cold. :)

GrahamTribe · 05/04/2012 10:11

KnackeredWoman, I don't know which idea appeals to me most, yours to serve food you know the checky fuckers don't like or your DH's to serve sausage rolls which have been pre-licked by your dog.

On the whole I think I might go for the second one. I'd like to think that your dog is a slobbery Newfoundland. Grin
I'v always done things like Queen, a polite note to warn the host that there are non meat-eaters in the family but to say not to do anything special and children told that they eat what's offered or go hungry.

Animation · 05/04/2012 10:16

Agree that that Iceland food does look a bit cheap and nasty! Grin

MissKeithLemon · 05/04/2012 10:19

Hmm I agree with chippyminton.... whats wrong with sausage rolls and drumsticks etc??! I think you are being snooty OP and you know it

I'd hazzard a guess that as another member of your family have offered to buy the food you consider beneath you the kids prefer, that you are known for being this snobby way.

They do sell this type of party food in places other than iceland you do realise? You sound like the sort of person who my rl friends and I would call 'all fur coat and no knickers'

YABU

Mrsjay · 05/04/2012 10:21

wow @ people putting in orders , ignore them and make the food your making if they dont eat then tough, yanbu

lesley33 · 05/04/2012 10:23

Well Keith, in that case I am all fur coat and no knickers!

But since we are talking about stereotypes...what does that make you?

LoveHandles88 · 05/04/2012 10:27

Tell them all to get over themselves. The day is not about them! If they don't want to eat what is provided, they can stop off at McDs for some nuggets on their way home, cretins.

AFuckingKnackeredWoman · 05/04/2012 10:28

MissKeithLemon why be so rude?

You and your rl friend sound lovely. Stick with them, with that crappy attitude you wont make any nice new ones...

LoveHandles88 · 05/04/2012 10:29

Not all Iceland food is crappy tbf. And you can make any food look nice with a bit of garnish or added extras. But, that's not really the point. I hope the day goes well.

marshmallowpies · 05/04/2012 10:30

I mainly agree with you & the food you have planned sounds great, but I do think where children are involved, chipolata sausages are essential...fussy kids that don't want to eat anything else always seem to eat those!

I usually make sure I have them on hand when my nephews come round (along with things like carrot sticks and cucumber sticks, and/or breadsticks with dips) but at the last family gathering I organised, I forgot the wretched sausages, and sure enough, the nephews grumbled that they didn't like any of the food. (although luckily in my case some breadsticks my DH had bought as an emergency back-up came in handy, plus they ate all the biscuits :))

zookeeper · 05/04/2012 10:33

Your food sounds great but a large plate of small sausages wouldn't lower the tone too much Wink and I bet they'd get eaten by all.

DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 05/04/2012 12:09

Damn, forgot my knickers again!

Sorry, the request was not for the children, but it was mentioned that at least the children would then have something they liked (or words to that effect)

I actually have nothing against Iceland (actually that is a lie, it is fucking madness in there!) But I wanted to provide a nice meal for family members especially seeing as a lot of them have travelled.

Anyways, I have just been and have purchased sausage rolls and cocktail sausages.

You sound extremely reasonable OP.

Put out a few things from Greggs while you're at it.

DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 05/04/2012 12:33

:o

Luckily, they are my family and I do love them but what is wrong with a ham sandwich :o

lesley33 · 05/04/2012 12:33

Keep your knickers on OP Shock.

I was assumin of course you will have Fruit Shoots and Greg sausage rolls. After all, think of the children!

HTH

BusinessTrills · 05/04/2012 12:34

I'll come and help you eat the nice stuff - when is it? I'm even nearby!

Salmotrutta · 05/04/2012 12:34

Unless you have a medical condition with dietary requirements (or an actual allergy) you have no right to enquire what is being served when invited to something.
Rude, rude, rude.
And I don't think you sounded "snobby" at all - you want to serve nice food that's all.

DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 05/04/2012 12:36

Well Trills, there might be a fair bit leftover..... :o

OP posts:
Debsbear · 05/04/2012 12:36

YOUR party, have what YOU want! If they don't like it then they can stay at home. I'm a reasonably fussy eater but wouldn't dream of EVER putting in "orders", thta's plain weird!

Pandemoniaa · 05/04/2012 12:37

If it's snooty to not want to serve Iceland buffet food then I'll join the club. I dislike their food because it tastes shit. Not because it is cheap. In fact I'm very partial to cocktail sausages and sausage rolls but not Iceland's version.

But I still think it is unreasonable of guests to assume that there will be nothing for children to eat if you choose not to provide platters of Icelandshyte.

thestringcheesemassacre · 05/04/2012 12:37

I can't stand all this food enquiry stuff when eating at other peoples dinners/parties etc. It's so rude. I just show up and eat, if I'm not a big fan of whatever it maybe, I just politely pick around it.

lesley33 · 05/04/2012 12:39

Agree massacre. And I have been to things where I really don't like any of the food. But I would never have been rude and put in orders.

thestringcheesemassacre · 05/04/2012 12:40

I know Lesley, veges/vegans aside its blardy rude.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 05/04/2012 12:43

agreed pande the box tastes better than alot of their stuff :o
