to think nearly £1,000 is too much for a child's bed?!

A very kind relative has offered to buy DS a new bed when he grows out of his toddler cot-bed, which will be fairly soon. this one

While on the one hand I'm delighted (and not half as much as DS would be!) it costs the best part of a grand! That's more than I think any of our possessions actually cost!

We spent less than that on our last car (about half as much on the one before.)
We're pretty skint atm. It seems obscene to spend so much on a bed! Our own bed was £300 and that was a luxury purchase for us. Most of our furniture is off ebay or from IKEA and cost under £40.

Would it be churlish to say "Thanks but why don't you buy a cheaper bed for DS, and spend the rest on some other useful stuff for him? Or put it in an account for him perhaps?".

That sticks in my throat though, it seems really unkind to turn a gift down.

I suppose I can see the funny side of DS's bed being the most expensive item in the house! I wouldn't resent it one bit, it just seems obscene! I didn't know you could spend a grand on a child's bed Shock

I would have that bad myself! Grin

You could ask them to get one cheaper as there's a few similiar ones that don't cost as much.

TheSinglePringle · 05/04/2012 00:39

Bed*

WorraLiberty · 05/04/2012 00:40

Send them a link to the Argos ones, perhaps they genuinely don't know they can get the same thing cheaper?

Duckypoohs · 05/04/2012 00:42

I think a bed (well at least the frame) which would last all the way through childhood, might, just might may be worth the price, not that I would pay that much. That bed looks quite cheap imo, why not search out good quality beds that will last, at a more reasonable price, would be a shame to look a gift horse in the mouth but that bed at that price is ridiculous.

threeleftfeet · 05/04/2012 00:45

I don't want to just ask them to get a cheaper one, unless they're going to spend the difference on something else for DS.

It would be really mean to not let him have something really expensive just because I haven't got anything like that!

The same relative bought DS a children's table and chairs from the same place a while back and they're really good quality, they're sturdy enough for adults. Actually that's a point, the bed would probably be strong enough for me Wink good suggestion! Grin

I'd really like to say, thanks, why not get a cheaper bed and some other stuff for DS, but that seems kind of wrong - is it?

I suppose what's on offer here is a bed, isn't it? Not £850 to spend as we direct.

This one is similar.

startail · 05/04/2012 00:47

DD1 had a bed with a slide, Argos I think. It didn't cost that kind of money.
Also she only used the slide between 3 and 5 because she careered into the radiator.

WorraLiberty · 05/04/2012 00:48

I don't want to just ask them to get a cheaper one, unless they're going to spend the difference on something else for DS.

Why? surely the fact they want to pay for his bed is enough? Confused

It would be really mean to not let him have something really expensive just because I haven't got anything like that!

Does he know the value of money to that extent? I mean surely he'd be just as happy in a bed he likes no matter what the cost?

threeleftfeet · 05/04/2012 00:48

Not keen on Argos sorry. They're fine for toys, but I think the quality's of their furniture's not great and overpriced for what it is.

I'd rather buy second hand, or shop around for a bargain than get big items there (we got our bed from a sale at a factory outlet. Was nearly half price!)

OP posts:
threeleftfeet · 05/04/2012 00:50

No, DS won't know the difference, but if the quality's better it'll last longer surely?

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 05/04/2012 00:51

I've got two Argos beds here that my DS's have been sleeping in for 7yrs and almost 14yrs...they're as sturdy as anything (the beds...not the kids!)

threeleftfeet · 05/04/2012 00:51

Ooh yes, that looks nice MonsterBookOfTysons!

OP posts:
threeleftfeet · 05/04/2012 00:52

OK OK I'll have a look Grin

OP posts:
winnybella · 05/04/2012 00:53

There must be cheaper ones to be had, surely. It's just pine and simple design.

But, as worra said, it would be really, really in bad taste to suggest the relative buys him something else with the rest of the money/puts in to an account for him. The point is that she/he wants to buy him a bed, not that they have allocated 850 pounds for him iyswim.

threeleftfeet · 05/04/2012 00:54

OK I looked at Argos. Nothing with a slide!

MonsterBookOfTysons · 05/04/2012 00:55

threeleftfeet · 05/04/2012 00:55

MonsterBookOfTysons · 05/04/2012 01:03

:o Glad to help!
Check ebay out too. They have more choice on there and the beds are mainly new :)

Bogeyface · 05/04/2012 01:07

Research it. If you think that as a piece of furniture it will last many many years then I would accept it. Better to have it now and not have to think about it again than have a panic when his cheap bed falls apart in 5 years.

If you think that it isnt that good quality (although it does look good at first glance) then thank them, say that you have seen reviews and perhaps you could look at a different bed as you dont want their money wasted.

StarlightMcEggsie · 05/04/2012 01:41

what about this one?

threeleftfeet · 05/04/2012 08:30

Shock wow, that really is obscene, Starlight! Good find!

It's got a double bed though, it could last him a few decades I suppose! Wink

Do people really spend ?7000+ on children's beds? I guess they must do!
