To think that Asda opticians have neglected their duty of care?

I have been wearing contact lenses for approx 6.5 years, using Asda opticians. I have had consultations free of charge and had to pay only for my lenses - I never thought it would be any different elsewhere.

I have now moved 30 mins away and found a new optician for convenience. I was at first shocked to discover a consultation is £30 (covering you for 2 appts a year)

I now realise why ASDA dont charge - I have been advised by my new optician that I have damage to the surface of my eye due to misuse of my lenses, doing things I never knew were potentially dangerous to my eyes and in some cases sight threatening. Have ASDA neglected their duty of care?

What have you been doing that you weren't advised not to?

I have switched to Asda 3 months ago, after years with D&A. There is no difference in the care offered, except Asda is much cheaper. I have had 3 after care appointments already, which I paid £15 for the initial appointment. There after all aftercare is free.

Depends.

What were you doing that you've now been told not to?

Bangtastic · 04/04/2012 18:42

Confused Were you not shown how to put them in/take them out/wear them properly? What were you doing that were dangerous to your eyes?

Ask Asda for a copy of your records - you might need to pay for a copy. Then you can see if any issues were noted and not acted on.

If you are paying for CL appts then there is no pressure in the optician to cover their costs from sales, which has to be better where eyesight is concerned.

Well, I never thought things like cleaning with bleach or other similar chemicals was dangerous when wearing lenses, or getting water in your eyes, can cause irreversible damage and eye disease. My new optician was very detailed in the advice she offered and advise me I do have some damage to the surface of my eye

YOU USED BLEACH TO CLEAN YOUR LENSES ....YABVVS

hathorinareddress · 04/04/2012 18:51

You really need to go and get advice from a solicitor in that case.

Bangtastic · 04/04/2012 18:51

BLEACH? Come on now. Common bloody sense applies here surely? Why on earth would you bleach something you put in your eyes?!

juneybean · 04/04/2012 18:51

Bleach, are you taking the piss?

Charliefarlie1192 · 04/04/2012 18:51

Gordy - no i cleaned kitchen/bathroom etc with bleach whilst wearing my lenses............

OP posts:
juneybean · 04/04/2012 18:52

Oh hang on, do you mean cleaning the house with bleach and the fumes getting in your eyes? I've never been told that either?

Bangtastic · 04/04/2012 18:53

I take back my above post and read the post properly... Grin DD distracting me Wink

Using bleach when wearing them is dangerous? Hmm Never had any problems in the 9 years I have worn them and used bleach, and I am forever getting water in my eyes in the shower.

Charliefarlie1192 · 04/04/2012 18:53

I didnt put bleach in my eyes everyone - wow, I cleaned my house using bleach whilst wearing lenses and apparently the lenses absorb the chemicals and is apparently something opticians should advise against

Feenie · 04/04/2012 18:53

You are having a laugh, no way!

Bangtastic · 04/04/2012 18:54

Also was never told it can be dangerous. I'm off to sue Specsavers...

Charliefarlie1192 · 04/04/2012 18:54

well bangtastic - apparently wearing them in the shower is dangerous too - really this is the advice me optician has offered

juneybean · 04/04/2012 18:54

As for the water thing, I think it's not generally a great idea as the water gets stuck between your lens and your eye, i.e. I've been told I shouldn't go swimming with them in, but I still do Confused

Think it's your new optician that's a bit daft.

gordyslovesheep · 04/04/2012 18:54

WELL 15years of lense wear and I have never been told that Grin maybe there is a reason

DPrince · 04/04/2012 18:54

With all due respect, what are you talking about?

BreeVanDerTramp · 04/04/2012 18:54

Seriously? Are you saying ASDA told you to do this, or that they neglected to tell you not to?

Where the actual fuck has all the common sense gone from this country?

Bangtastic · 04/04/2012 18:55

I need to wear mine in the shower, my glasses steam up and without them or contacts, I can't see what I'm bloody shaving!
