To think that Asda opticians have neglected their duty of care?

Charliefarlie1192 · 04/04/2012 18:36

I have been wearing contact lenses for approx 6.5 years, using Asda opticians. I have had consultations free of charge and had to pay only for my lenses - I never thought it would be any different elsewhere.

I have now moved 30 mins away and found a new optician for convenience. I was at first shocked to discover a consultation is £30 (covering you for 2 appts a year)

I now realise why ASDA dont charge - I have been advised by my new optician that I have damage to the surface of my eye due to misuse of my lenses, doing things I never knew were potentially dangerous to my eyes and in some cases sight threatening. Have ASDA neglected their duty of care?

Am laughing a bit at the muddle this thread has got into already...

sorry OP

TheDetective · 04/04/2012 18:56

Nope, never been told any of that. I don't think its true either tbh. Unless someone would like to correct me. I have used several different opticians too. An independent optician, Boots, D&A, Specsavers, and Asda.

I've been wearing lenses since the age of 12. Thats 15 years of lens use, and I over wear them, wear them swimming, in the shower etc. I clean with bleach regularly, even accidently getting bleach in my eye once.

I don't have any damage to my eyes.

Charliefarlie1192 · 04/04/2012 18:56

bree I am saying ASDA should be telling people not to wear their lenses in the shower etc as how else would you know not to?

If you have had damage to your eyes as a result of not being told what to do properly by your previous optician you should go to a solicitor.

I have never been told the bleach thing. I have worn them for years and used several different opticians. I think your new one is trying to stop you going to asda. LEAVE THE BASTARD (optician) :)

TheDetective · 04/04/2012 18:59

I think you should go to a different optician and get a second opinion OP. That is the only way you will know if this is true or not.

BreeVanDerTramp · 04/04/2012 18:59

Just realised like everyone else you meant that you should not use bleach while wearing contacts! Have checked my Domestos bottle and it does not advise against contact lens wearing, perhaps you should contact them also? Confused

Charliefarlie1192 · 04/04/2012 19:01

She said it isnt going to affect my eyesight and its superficial, and as long as I dont continue the misuse my eyes should be ok

By the way, my Asda optician did tell me not to wear the lenses when swimming. I just nodded and wondered if they lived in the real world.

With -5.25 vision in both eyes, how do you expect me to safely care run round shouting at for my children while out swimming. I'd not be able to tell if it was them, or an inanimate object! And glasses - you can't swim properly in glasses! And if you only go swimming 2/3 times a year, who the fuck is gonna pay for prescription goggles.

Sounds like your new optician is just having a bit of a rant against asda. I have a very good optician and have never been told not to use bleach. I don't think I have been told not to swim in them but it is common sense that it is probably not good to get chlorine on your lenses.

DPrince · 04/04/2012 19:05

So its damage, that could be sight threatening? But your ok. Hmmmm and it 'can' be so bad its not on a bleach label as a warning?

gordyslovesheep · 04/04/2012 19:05

I wear dailies though - chuck em out after showering/cleaning !

Charliefarlie1192 · 04/04/2012 19:06

my new optician didnt know where I had been going beforehand she just advised me of dangers etc and then I told her I have NEVER heard any of this info before. She WAS shocked though....

OneLittleBabyTerror · 04/04/2012 19:06

I have been told about the water thing by multiple opticians. But I take risk and swim with goggles instead. I am also extra careful when showering in the gym.

Have never heard about the bleach thing.

Ivytheterrible · 04/04/2012 19:07

I'm -9.50 and -10.25 in my eyes and have worn my lenses for swimming up to 6 times a week (competitive swimmer) for around 20 years. No optician has ever told me this is a bad idea and I have no damage.

I am so blind I would have never been able to persue my talent and hobby without doing this! Prescription goggles didn't go up to this power when I was a child!

AuntieMaggie · 04/04/2012 19:08

Were you given any paperwork? What lenses do you use?
