To not understand hide 'n' squeak eggs

DD has Tomy Hide 'n' Squeak eggs
They have great reviews and were recommended by loads of our friends, but I just don't get it. Why are they so popular?
DD loves driving me nuts making me open the box for her so she can close it again & give it back to me to open but the chicks don't even really squeak. What's it all about?

I dunno but DS loves them and DH is adamant they're the best £5 we've ever spent on baby stuff!

KatyMac · 04/04/2012 14:02

As a childminder of 9 years I can say they are extremely popular & a pain in the neck (as you can never find them all)

ShowMethePony · 04/04/2012 14:02

You have to hold them with your thumb or whatever over the little hole at the bottom - its more of a whistle tbh.

They are one of those toys that last as they can play with them at different stages, I think that is why they are so popular.

If it wasn't opening and closing that box it would be another box. Ds is on opening and closing doors and gates atm, doesn't care where we are or how often he gets stuck.

AlanMoore · 04/04/2012 14:03

They're not for you, they're for babies and cats who think they are AMAAAAAZING. You trying to see the appeal is the equivalent of leaving a 9 month old on his own in a quiet room with a G&T and a copy of the Great Gatsby and expecting him to spend a lovely relaxing afternoon.

SundaeGirl · 04/04/2012 14:03

Based on those two posts alone I've ordered some for my godson!

AlanMoore · 04/04/2012 14:04

so YANBU to find them baffling!

nickelhasababy · 04/04/2012 14:04

oooh! those eggs are in my peekaboo book!

I didn't know they made a noise though!

My dc both loved them but yes finding all the 'shells' at the end of the day was a PITA - but strangely satisfying when the task was completed.

FashionEaster · 04/04/2012 14:16

Similarly mystified - a bit like the teething giraffe - but ds does keep going back to them.

DS never looked once at them DD quite likes them but not so much that I would recommend them over say, stacking cups.

bagelmonkey · 04/04/2012 14:17

FashionEaster - love the name :)
Would that be Sophie the dog chew giraffe?

DS got them at Christmas. He loves them so much I would say its one of the few toys he goes back to again and again. Latest incarnation is to give one to me and he plays guess which hand, then he snatches it back and slam-dunks it into the right hole with a massive grin on his face.

Red2011 · 04/04/2012 14:21

We have those! DD plays with the box more than the eggs though. And the shells bloody hurt when you don't see them and tread on them with bare feet!

FashionEaster · 04/04/2012 14:22

[swirls] in an immodest Samantha Brick way

Yes, very dog chew. Confused pooch and toddler alike.

Snakeonaplane · 04/04/2012 14:26

I feel like I've missed something the first and second time around dd2 now needs, the eggs, Sophie le giraffe and that Emily Lamaze doll apparently, no wonder my first 2 are the way they are, I'd never heard of these things before but now they keep cropping up

OpenMindedSceptic · 04/04/2012 14:30

I bought them for DS when he was about 10 months. They then kept him busy for good 20 mins each time he played with them. He has recently rediscovered them (at 2.6y) and still loves them. We are currently missing one top egg shell, it is driving me crazy!

OriginalJamie · 04/04/2012 14:32

they were a real favourite in our house. I'm so glad they still sell them. Good honest toy, no batteries.

OriginalJamie · 04/04/2012 14:34

And what is not to like? You've got sorting, shape recognition, fine motor skills, putting things in and taking them out, noises, cute little faces, colour recognition. There's very little they can't do.

Great toy

IKilledIgglePiggle · 04/04/2012 14:37

yy to losing them, we are also missing one egg top, I know the little bugger is hiding somewhere.

OriginalJamie · 04/04/2012 14:38

Oh yes, really portable, too.

Pascha · 04/04/2012 15:04

There's always a bit missing. Usually different every day though Confused

Kayano · 04/04/2012 15:07

Can someone link this miraculous baby toy?

BertieBotts · 04/04/2012 15:08

Are they suitable for a 16 month old or is it a bit late by then?
