Ok, so this morning I put the oven racks in the sink to soak, had just started to scrub them and my darling dh had stuck a load of bleach in with them before he went to work without telling me. As I write this my hands are now turning white and stinging... grrr the mans obsessed with bleach if he got his way he would use it on everything, personally I don't really like the stuff and will only use it when I really need to.
Anyones else have an oh that has strange cleaning habits?
(Disclaimer- I know using bleach isn't weird, but he even wants to use it to clean plates Confused)

Has he ever worked in food service? We had to put a capful of bleach in every bowl of water for washing up/wiping down/general cleaning. It took me a long time to break the habit!

pepperrabbit · 03/04/2012 11:11

It's taken me a long time to train my DH that laundry does NOT NEED to be boiled to get it clean.
In fact i just do all the washing myself now as I was sick of barbie doll size clothes fluttering out of the washing machine!
Bleach is his first thought for any spillage Hmm.

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 03/04/2012 11:12

My mum, also in the food industry, is obsessed with bleach. She bleaches her kitchen surfaces several times a week and all her tops get holes in the front from leaning in the bleach when she's cleaning. But still she carries on doing it. Old habits die hard I guess. I agree with you and only use bleach occasionally.

technoduck · 03/04/2012 11:40

Thanks for the feed back, mmmcoffee he's never worked in the food trade Im the one that worked as a chef for a good few years!
pepperrabbit I have the problem with dh that he wants to wash everything on a cold wash Hmm so it never gets really clean.

YANBU. It was very inconsiderate of him to put bleach in the sink without telling you, and does he not think you are capable of cleaning properly? In that case I'd be minded to tell him to do it himself if he doesn't like the way you do it.

Chilenachica · 03/04/2012 12:16

I won't have bleach in the house for this very reason. The final straw for me was tasting bleach on the cutlery.

Mandy2003 · 03/04/2012 13:25

I got the sack from my first catering job - I was covering for the kitchen porter that day, doing the pot wash. Apparently I used too much bleach!! I'd diluted it and cleaned all the empty racks and washed down the tiles with it.

Mind you, this was about 30 years ago so I was probably ahead of my time Grin

I wonder what it is with men and bleach though? My dad spilled curry on a multicoloured checked shirt and wiped it down with neat Domestos. Sure the curry stain went, but so did every other colour in that bit of the shirt!

sasslejaney84 · 03/04/2012 13:43

I bleach clean my whole kitchen and bathroom once a week... I've never worked in the kitchen trade, however I will say YANBU!! If my OH was cleaning I wouldn't do that!!

Personally, its something I've done since I had my DD and her dad was so unclean I had no choice!! He used to come back from work at 7AM and cook himself some food and leave EVERYTHING out!! Used to do my head in!! I had a 6 week old baby in my arms when I slipped on some milk he had spilt on the floor and not cleaned up!!

My DD is now picking up my cleaning habbits though... She asked me if she could vac under her bed yesterday as she knows I can't do it due to the fact that I can't get under it any more thanks to baby number 2 on the way!! My OH just sat there with a Shock look on his face!!

technoduck · 03/04/2012 14:06

Glad i'm not bu, I know he was just trying to help but my hands still hurt. And I'm 21 weeks pregnant so I don't want to be around/using bleach ect.

Cleaning with bleach? Is this something we're meant to do? Has never occurred to me [slattern emoticon]

lynniep · 03/04/2012 16:03

My DH is obsessed with bleach also. The chrome fittings in the bath and sink and toilet seat are decaying because of it - doesnt matter how many times I tell him not to use bleach ALL OVER the toilet.

He also killed our old hob by drenching it with water, rather than just wiping it. I caught him doing it, but he'd probably done it many times previously.

I also caught him submerging the sandwich toaster in the washing up bowl to clean it. He has killed many of DS's toys in this way. (although probably an improvement that they no longer play tunes)

MrsMellowDrummer · 03/04/2012 16:04

I'm remembering an episode of Casualty from years and years and years ago, where a family bleached everything in sight (including the lettuce if I remember rightly!) with AWFUL repercussions to their health. Maybe sit him down in front of that one evening?

[can't believe my anal memory emoticon]

valiumredhead · 03/04/2012 16:05

I love a bit of bleach but not for washing up only on sinks and down loos!

NagooBunnytail · 03/04/2012 16:11

My Mum is like Ghoul's. I had orange dots on all my black socks, and stripes on my tops from the worktops.

Astr0naut · 03/04/2012 16:12

And my dh! Gonna show him this thread cos he drives me nuts. HE thinks it's a wonder clean.

WHen I was a saturday girl in the butcher's, we used washing up liquid on the floor to cut through the grease (bleurgh!), then disinfectant. Bleach might kill germs, but it's crap at getting shit off stuff!

AGree with VAlium about uses for bleach. Dh makes his own kitchen spray and squirts everything. I think they think that if it smells of bleach, it must be clean. Possibly too many years in men's urinals?

CuffingChunt · 03/04/2012 16:31

I recently did a food hygiene course and bleach is apparently a huge no no in the food industry!
It apparently doesn't get used properly and consequently doesn't kill germs. The instructor hated the stuff and said all it does is makes stuff smell clean. You are supposed to use detergent to get rid of grease and grime and anti bac sprays used with paper towels to kill germs.
That said I like to use it to do the sink once a week.
[cleaning geek emoticon]

technoduck · 03/04/2012 16:38

I never knew it decayed chrome, that explains alot in are old flat the floors and worktops all started turning a funny colour and the shower fittings looked like they where rotting- which meant more bleach!
So many clothes where ruined, ive tried to put my foot down abit more now but isn't working very well Blush
Ive always found that washing up liquid cuts through the greasy stuff too.

usualsuspect · 03/04/2012 16:40

I work in the food industry and bleach is not allowed in our kitchen.

Astr0naut · 03/04/2012 16:50

Just told DH about this thread and he dismissed it with a teenager face and a 'meh meh meh'.

Can you all come round to my house and beat him around the head with fairy liquid bottles, please?

Astr0naut · 03/04/2012 16:51

He knows best, you see, having never worked in a food environment.

PinkPepper · 03/04/2012 16:55

Another dp obsessed with bleach here. The smell makes me gag and I actually threw up (though that was morning sickness too) the once so he doesn't use it so much now Grin

oldmum42 · 03/04/2012 16:57

I detest the smell of bleach, it make my dry-heave. I have walked out of cafe a more than once when hit by the smell of it on the tables.

Vile. I's rather have the dirt, thank you!

oldmum42 · 03/04/2012 16:58

Makes ME dry-heave!

Agincourt · 03/04/2012 17:01

oh god I need to get my mind out of the gutter...I thought this would be about anal bleaching Blush

CremeEggThief · 03/04/2012 17:04

Bleach? Once a week down the loos is plenty.
