To expect daughter to look a bit more 'relaxed and scruffy' now she's home from school

Eldest DD back from boarding school this morning for the holidays, and whilst of course I agree that wearing correct and smart uniform is required on the journeys to and from school, surely now she's home she ought to be changing into 'home clothes' or at least relaxing it a bit instead of looking horrendously smart still. We're about to go out shopping and surely she'd be more comfortable?!

I don't know, whatever she's comfortable in. What is she wearing?

localyokel · 31/03/2012 13:21

She's wearing a shirt and tie and skirt, even still got her blazer on! Just slobbing around and seemingly not bothered!

I think this is the first time I've ever heard a parent complain that their child is not looking scruffy enough.

redexpat · 31/03/2012 13:25

I used to slob around in my uniform after school. Never understood why it was considered less comfortable than other clothes.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/03/2012 13:25

Why don't you ask her about it, OP?

I thought all school children wore blazers anyway... just saying. Wink

Hmm your DD doesn't go to boarding school does she?

GrittersWifeAndProud · 31/03/2012 13:28

It's saturday and she's wearing school uniform? Has she just got in today then? If I were her I'd be straight into some jeans and t shirt! Just tell her you need her to get changed so you can wash her uniform :o

GrittersWifeAndProud · 31/03/2012 13:31

Lying not all of them wear blazers. I never did. Infact only 2 schools in our town have blazers, one is the posh grammar school and the other is the even posher prep school!

localyokel · 31/03/2012 13:31

Yep, they travel on a Saturday either to or from school.
I have asked her, she seemingly not bothered but I know she'll want to see some of her friends on the way back home and she can't very well go round to their houses still in her uniform can she? I know she's probably tired and I'm hassling her, I just don't understand why she doesn't even want to relax it a bit!

GrittersWife... I didn't realise that. They were the most hated garment in school and I still see lots of kids with them on.

I was having a gentle dig at OP for trying to stealth boast - and doing it very unsubtly too. Grin

tethersend · 31/03/2012 13:34

Another example of Broken Britain.

MrsKittyFane · 31/03/2012 13:35

I think she is relaxing, so much so she can't be bothered to get changed!

localyokel · 31/03/2012 13:37

Sorry no I'm not boasting, stealth or otherwise!! I couldn't really have explained why she was in her uniform unless I'd said that though, that would have sounded even wierder!

OP posts:
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/03/2012 13:40

Yes you could have, OP. You could have just said that she's still wearing her school uniform even though she's on holiday. I think most mums would understand that - we were always told to get out of our uniforms and no slide around on the floor with them, to avoid wear and tear.

You did make a big point of the boarding school and travelling and so on. Just saying.

localyokel · 31/03/2012 13:44

Sorry, that wasn't the intention. I only mentioned the travelling because GrittersWife asked if she'd just got in.

I'm not going to argue Smile

OP posts:
seeker · 31/03/2012 13:47

Maybe she's making some kind of point?

localyokel · 31/03/2012 13:50

I don't know, she won't say. I know it sounds stupid wanting her to look less smart, not sure what compromise I can try and come to if she won't change totally.

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 31/03/2012 13:54

How about - "Go and change so I can wash your uniform."

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 31/03/2012 13:54

My big sister went to the posh grammar school I mentioned, and they aren't allowed to remove their blazers without permission. So even if it's sweltering hot they still need to ask if they can take them off Shock

So yes Lying I can understand why they would be hated :o

seeker · 31/03/2012 13:55

Very odd. How old is she?

valiumredhead · 31/03/2012 13:56

How long has she been home? Just tell her to get changed, nothing more nothing less.

Without wanting to sound too judgy - your child has been away at school all term. Get off mumsnet and spend time with her!

In the nicest possible way :)

CupOfBrownJoy · 31/03/2012 17:43

What the hell?

Why does it matter?

Stop being overbearing and ridiculous.
