My three daughters 9, 12, 15 yr old are (still) wearing aprons during meals at home. They are used to it and don't mind.
Not that they really need them, but accident do happens, and I really don't like them to ruin a cloth due to an accidental stain.

AIBU ?

Oh do be quiet Grin

I know it's Friday...but really!

headfairy · 30/03/2012 13:01

I'm amazed you can actually manage to persuade them to wear them. My 2 yo dd absolutely refuses and 4 yo ds likewise (he's far too "growd up" apparently then you should stop dropping food down your sodding front then

Flisspaps · 30/03/2012 13:03

Depends.

What do the aprons look like?

I'd think they look rather fetching if they are naice 1950s style pinnies, not so much if they're polyester tabards...

LineRunner · 30/03/2012 13:04

Are they like big bibs, then?

WorraLiberty · 30/03/2012 13:05

Anyway OP, what happens with your '5.5 yr old DD'?

Or did you forget about that one? Wink

My 5.5 DD ? Are you talking about my little one who is now (almost) 9 ?

Doesn't time fly?

Pandemoniaa · 30/03/2012 13:11

Surely you expect them to wear plastic rainhats too don't you? Or at least waders. Only spillages can be so tiresome.

I still make my husband wear one when he eats spaghetti bolognaise! (he is happy with this as he can't be bothered to change out of his work shirts which he pays a fortune for) I would be amazed if teenagers agreed to it though!

headfairy · 30/03/2012 13:16

ah, has the op been caught out?

tessie1 · 30/03/2012 13:17

They've got standard funny cooking aprons, like this www.spottygreenfrog.co.uk/Childrens-Cooking/Childrens-Aprons/Pink-Junior-Apron/p-92-66-1270/

I wear one of those when I go speed dating.

Scholes34 · 30/03/2012 13:18

I make my DH wear one if he's straight in from work in a white office shirt and about to eat spag bol!

Scholes34 · 30/03/2012 13:19

Double jinx padlock, Florin

I make my family wear a painting apron or take their clothes off and eat in their pants if they are eating spaghetti and red sauce. They are the messiest eaters you have ever seen. I make them mop up afterwards too. They think it is funny. 6, 10 and 40 since you ask. I do not appreciate extra laundry and tomato stains.

Starwisher · 30/03/2012 13:22

We all have matching aprons monogrammed with the family crest

EndoplasmicReticulum · 30/03/2012 13:22

My mum always wears an apron when she eats a meal, and she's 63....

imnotmymum · 30/03/2012 13:22

Are you being serious... no obviously not as no-one on planet earth surely would do this to a teen !! And that is why we have washing machines !!! although a friend of mine used to put a bib over her babies "good" bib to keep that clean !! It is not you is it OP the ages would add up !!????

Firawla · 30/03/2012 13:23

My mum used to tell us to do this, yes even up to these ages that the op is mentioning - we never used to get food on our clothes any way so don't know why?! She also wears it herself..
it makes me cringe, i just don't like it. used to feel quite belittling to be asked to wear this as inside i would be thinking fgs we dont drop our food anyway!!
tbh my kids would probably benefit from it as they do sometimes drop food - well mainly the 2 yr old, but i would rather let them ruin clothes than put them in aprons i think Confused but i rather just train them to eat properly and stay clean, why do your kids need it at that age

SamMag · 30/03/2012 13:25

I suppose if you are all happy it's no one else's business but seeing as you asked...

I am Confused that you haven't been able to teach a 9yo not to spill qhen eating let alone a 12 and 15 yo. I'm assuming you would have mention SN if that was relevant. My two 4 yo have been anle to eat nicely withput spilling for well over a year.

How do your children's guests react - I'm surprised this tale hasn't been carried back to school and led to bullying.

How do your children manage when eating outside the home?

I do feel that this is pretty undignified for a 15 yo. I would feel this is infantilising them.

Pandemoniaa · 30/03/2012 13:25

I'd be thoroughly put off my spagbol if I had to witness the rest of the family eating theirs whilst wearing little more than their pants! Admittedly, the youngest two are 29, but even so...

sallymonella · 30/03/2012 13:32

Thank goodness this never occurred to my mum when I was little - she'd have loved it!

tessie1 · 30/03/2012 13:41

Of course the girls are not spilling all over themselves at all meals. It is just a precaution.
When eating outside ? They usually take care. At home they are more careless.
