I've never given the pizza delivery people a tip

Am I supposed to? The one that just came kind of looked at me for a second expecting something, and it hit me...am I supposed to be giving them money? I pay online btw, so thought tips wouldn't be expected.

Have I been U? I feel quite embarrassed.

No, I don't.

I always wonder this myself.

I usually round up when paying for takeaway or taxi - so if it comes to say £18 I would pay with a £20 note.

However I have started to get very stingy when I get my hair done. If it was as straightfoward as rounding up to the nearest round figure I probably would tip. But I have stopped because it was confusing - if I pay say £100 for a cut and colour do I tip 10 or 15%, so £10 or £15?

However this does seem extortionate to me when you are already paying out so much money for a service.... Then is it £1 or £2 for the girl who washes your hair, a further £1 for the one who brings you a cup of tea? Confused

I used to tip £5 or £10 in total but always wondered if I was under tipping and considered stingy, even though I actually felt a bit resentful that it was expected of me at all [should be considered a nice gesture and a bit of a surprise to the recipient, not an obligation iyswim]

So now I just pay what I owe for the service on my credit card and slink away, ignoring any expectant looks or hanging around at the till from the person who did my hair...

So far I have not had retribution delivered in a hideous hairstyle or an inability to book an appointment prior to sometime in 2015 Grin

If I earn less than the pizza guy or the hairdresser, should they tip me? :o

CaptainKirk · 25/03/2012 06:52

I do tip a pound or so but mainly because of what I know they got paid in the US. I actually have no idea if they get a decent wage here in the UK, I just tip from habit. I do know that we seem to get very good, quick service from our delivery drivers after we tip them!

Icelollycraving · 25/03/2012 07:04

I pay online for any takeaway which is about twice a year,so don't tip. Always tip hairdresser/beauty therapist & the junior. I can always get an appointment, they know I'm v picky & will always correct anything I'm not 100% happy with & last time let me take my baby. That's a whole other thread though!
I tip in restaurants but dh rarely does which makes me v uncomfortable & we used to row about it. Now I just stick the tip down in cash as we leave,he usually pays by card & I know lots of places don't pass on tips that have been paid that way robbing bastards

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 25/03/2012 07:05

I tip £1 if it's good weather, £2 if it's raining.

Chubfuddler · 25/03/2012 07:11

We live in the sticks so nowhere delivers to us. We tipped the pizza delivery guy at center parcs and he looked really surprised and embarrassingly grateful.

DizzyKipper · 25/03/2012 09:43

We normally tip, but we also have no doubts whatsoever that we're under no obligation to. I don't really think the amount of effort it takes to deliver a pizza really requires an extra financial reward - there are a lot worse jobs out there with no expectation of tipping at all.

squeakytoy · 25/03/2012 09:48

I tip our regular chinese food delivery man, and we always leave a tip in a restaurant. I would tip the hairdresser too, and cab drivers.

I dont tend to tip in bars, although if we are going in for a while and it is busy, it helps to offer to buy the serving staff member a drink or give them a tip, as you are likely to get served quicker next time you are at the bar.

CaptainKirk · 25/03/2012 14:00

Tipping in bars in the UK is useless since everything is measured properly. In the States tipping your bar staff is essential if you want quick service and you tend to get much stronger drinks as a bonus!

sparkle12mar08 · 25/03/2012 14:06

I never tip unless it's truly exceptional service. Just doing your job doesn't necessitate a tip imo.
