I've never given the pizza delivery people a tip

Am I supposed to? The one that just came kind of looked at me for a second expecting something, and it hit me...am I supposed to be giving them money? I pay online btw, so thought tips wouldn't be expected.

Have I been U? I feel quite embarrassed.

theprovonciallady "I wouldn't think of doing anything so patronising."

As long as you kid yourself someone on minimum wage would find someone tipping them patronising!

I do about a £1

NettoSuperstar · 24/03/2012 19:00

I don't.
I do give homemade cakes to the kebab delivery guy if I have baked though.

Sootie · 24/03/2012 19:01

Thanks hullygully (!)

Thats a good idea - tipping with confectionary and cakes!!

Babysitters and hairdressers - always over pay them. (rationale for that? children are your precious thing, and you risk looking like a dog if you dont Grin)

Taxi drivers, just round up to the nearest note
Delivery drivers - a quid.

helloclitty · 24/03/2012 19:04

I have been a delivery person and many people tip. I always used to think just £1 per house would make such a difference to my life. But sadly there were some stingy people out there.

Sootie · 24/03/2012 19:08

But some might have been unwittingly stingy, hello...

Scootie Grin

I hate tipping in general. I think it encourages employers to pay crappy wages. I used to be a waitress so I know that tips make a difference....but they shouldn't be necessary. Employers should include the full cost of their service in the price, including paying their employees properly just the same as virtually every business does. I hate feeling that someone is waiting for my charity and if they don't get it they will spit in my food or whatever.

gobbledegook1 · 24/03/2012 19:17

I never tip. My DP does if he awnser's the door but only if paying cash not if payed online.

StripyMagicDragon · 24/03/2012 19:22

I tip, but mainly because my dh does deliveries at weekends for extra money and I used to do some waitressing. So I like tips.
But I understand why some people don't, especially if youve paid online for it.

Last night, my dh got a £10 tip. This is because he is delivers pizza, but is Chinese. The guy kept telling him he didn't want a Chinese, he had the wrong door, it must have been a wind up etc, not letting dh get a word in and starting to shout, until he realised my dh was stood holding pizza boxes. So he got a guilt tip :)

Sootie · 24/03/2012 19:25

Stripy Shock that's appalling! But glad he got the £10 tip Wink

sometimes! I'm not sure what my criteria is though Confused - I suppose it has to be if I'm paying cash anyway and the total is close to the note? Like if it's £13 and I give £15 and say keep the change - more cause I'm greedy and wanna slam the door and stick my face in my food and not have to wait for change Blush

don't if I pay online

GerardWay · 24/03/2012 19:28

£2 from me as well. 10% at resturants and hairdressers.

TheNorthWitch · 24/03/2012 19:35

Always tip £1 - our favourite pizza place was a hour walk overall so when it's a cold night I don't mind paying a bit extra on top of del charge to have it brought to the door in a thermal bag. I don't pay online but would still tip even if I did.

MarquiseOfMelburnia · 24/03/2012 19:35

Yeah I tip about a quid. I only get a takeaway if I'm feeling flush anyway.

shreddedmum · 24/03/2012 19:37

oh yeah good point, I do if it's lashing rain too

jubilee10 · 24/03/2012 19:38

We only have Chinese if we have a takeaway and always use the same one so the delivery driver is like an old friend Grin. Winter 2011 we had deep snow getting worse by the minute and we wondered if they would be able to deliver. The driver couldn't get into our road so he parked and brought it on foot. I think he's worth a tip!

BrandyAlexander · 24/03/2012 19:41

Yes always. Either 10% of the bill (rounded up to nearest £1) or £2, whichever is more.

catgirl1976 · 24/03/2012 19:45

I do, except when I have already paid on-line, because I always forget to fish out a couple of quid and then feel embarrassed

Sorry to go off topic but have always wanted to know - are you meant to tip your beautician?

Sootie · 24/03/2012 19:54

catgirl - I have never tipped the woman who threads my eyebrows - and she still does them very nicely....Or maybe one day she'll get fed up and lob one off to get her own back at me...Confused

marriedinwhite · 24/03/2012 20:00

Always - a £ or two. Same goes for taxis, hairdressers, waiters, waitresses, buying a drink for a barman, present for teacher at Xmas, window cleaner, postie, bottle of wine for the porters at school (marvellous when ds used to forget stuff for getting into school at weekends Grin), present at Xmas for the cleaner, etc., etc..

Funny how my hairdresser can always fit me in at the last minute, how we can always be squeezed into our local restaurant without joining the queue, how the barman always is happy to bring over the drinks........

catgirl1976 · 24/03/2012 20:00

Thanks sootie I don't and then I think "Am I meant to? And do they hate me for not doing? Or would it be insulting to do it?" and then I feel all awkward and shuffle away

RuleBritannia · 24/03/2012 20:36

I don 't tip anyone. They all earn more than I have coming in.
