I've just had a very bizarre conversation and I'm sure I'm right and she's wrong but need a third party judge!

If you are at a friend's house and they offer tea/coffee etc, would you've offended if they asked for a cold drink instead?

She said she gets highly offended when anyone (me) does this to her as it means you don't want to stay long as cold drinks can be drunk quicker!!

I was a bit Shock and laughed which made things worse she didn't appreciate.

I don't like hot drinks do always ask for cold, am I accident offending everyone by subliminally saying 'I don't want to stay long?' Confused

I have read some weird things on here but that takes the Biscuit

I don't do hot drinks either, well I do like mulled wine Grin, but really don't expect people to have that in. And I actually like water, it is my non-alcoholic drink of choice.

Thank you all ... I feel much better about this now as I started the day thinking I was in the wrong :)

Strictly speaking I think it's polite to choose from the options given. Ask for something else instead and it implies the wrong choices were offered by the host. Nothing wrong with asking for water at any time if you don't like tea or coffee though. Less good to ask for a soft drink or squash as not everyone will have these or there may be much scrabbling around trying to find it. But if you know the person well, none of the above applies as much - you can be more open about your preferences.

I'd never thought about cold drink equalling "don't want to stay long" though!

Ask for a G&T next time Grin

Lepreporn · 24/03/2012 21:01

I don't drink tea or coffee at all. So guess that would really throw her.

Tiddlyompompom · 24/03/2012 22:47

She sounds like she could find an insult in "Good morning"! Of course you're right, she's being weird and a bit paranoid!

Does it make me rude to only offer tea or a cold drink, as coffee makes me feel vomitous? Grin

I'm really really fussy with hot drinks (any milk other than skimmed turns my stomach, and not may people have skimmed), plus caffeine doesn't agree with me, so I find it easier to ask for " a glass of water please, no tap water is fine, yes I'm sure, no I don't want sparkling, honestly I'm sure, just a glass of tap water", but after a couple of times people accept it thankfully. They'd find it much worse if I started on "what milk do you have, sorry I'm a bit fussy, do you have decaff coffee, what about fruit tea, no, I'd rather not camomile, could I have a glass of water please, no tap water is fine........"

yanbu
I always prefer a cold drink as I am very fussy about my coffee.

DizzyKipper · 25/03/2012 09:52

Well I don't actually drink tea or coffee, so I suppose I would be considered the devil in that house...

treadwarily · 25/03/2012 10:22

No wonder all her guests want to leave quickly...

DeepPurple · 26/03/2012 23:35

ROFL at tomato juice. I think i'll try that next time someone asks me what I want, just for laughs! Grin I hate tomato juice so I'll have to be sure they don't have any first Wink

Shes nuts.

Have a glass of wine on me!

BerryCheesecake · 26/03/2012 23:38

Deep purple - you could go one step further and go for freshly squeezed Wink

Grin
DeepPurple · 26/03/2012 23:47

Oh I'll just have some freshly squeezed carrot with a hint of ginger and a twist of lime. If it's not too much trouble, could I get some ice and a bright pink straw with that please?
