Um, are you sure it's 'all' religious people?

LaurieFairyCake · 23/03/2012 15:57

It's because pigs are perceived to be dirty animals because they roll in the mud.

They aren't 'dirty', they roll in the mud to keep cool.

Labootin · 23/03/2012 15:58

I have to buy pork from a special non Muslim counter

For Jewish people it is written in Torah along with many other restrictions. For Muslims it is because pigs are seen as unclean animals (traditionally used to eat faecel matter from public toilets).

Simple enough to Google.

DeepThought · 23/03/2012 15:59

oh hai
here you go

Spuddybean · 23/03/2012 15:59

Not All religions ban pork. As far as i am aware it is just Islam and Judaism.

Islam
The origin of this belief is derived from the chapter of the Cow (Al Baqara) speaks of this: Quran 2.173[4] which states:"He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of Allah. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, then is he guiltless. For Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful." Gelatin made from porcine skin or bones, which makes up roughly 50% of the supply of gelatin on the market, is forbidden. Gelatin made from other halal animals, fish for example, is acceptable.

Judaism
According to Jewish law, pork is one of a number of foods forbidden from consumption by Jews. These foods are known as "non-kosher" foods. In order for a meat to be kosher, it must first come from a kosher animal. A kosher animal must be a ruminant and have split hooves - therefore cows, sheep, goats and deer are all kosher, whereas camels and pigs (having each only one sign of kashrut) are not kosher.[5]

The answer is fairly obvious - perhaps try googling it.

Someone who must not be named (no, not her) told them not to.

It is argued that pork is more likely to carry parasites and give you food poisoning, hence it's a sensible prohibition if you're in the Middle East without a fridge - who knows?

Hullygully · 23/03/2012 16:00

Because

oh neve rmind

nickelhasababy · 23/03/2012 16:00

because in the bible, qu'ran and Torah, God spells out what animals you're allowed to eat. Cloven hooves that don't eat the cud aren't allowed.
that's a pig.

leviticus 11:7-8

Winkly · 23/03/2012 16:00

Well it's considered unclean in Judaism. Islam as well I think.

I was told that this was because, way back when in the heat in the Middle East pork went off much quicker than other meats and people eating it got ill regularly, hence unclean meat. Over the centuries it's become part of religious tradition.

I'm willing to find out that I'm wrong.

Labootin · 23/03/2012 16:01

Op you have been told why
Don't be so disingenuous

eurochick · 23/03/2012 16:01

Spuddybean has it.

The practical reason probably has something to do with pork not surviving terribly well in desert countries before the days of refrigeration.

housedilemma · 23/03/2012 16:01

I have a good muslim friend (not very strict though) who I studied with at Uni. She was quite relaxed about most of the rules, but would not eat pork.

I asked why it was wrong to eat pork and she said that basically the pig was considered to be a dirty animal, full of parasites etc.

I am not sure if that is the real reason, but that is the reason that she told me years ago.

cantspel · 23/03/2012 16:01

No dont google you might read islamic voice which will tell you

  1. Pig is the most shameless animal

The pig is the most shameless animal on the face of the earth. It is the only animal that invites its friends to have sex with its mate. It feels no jealousy. And among people who consume pork, the practice of wife swapping and other forms of promiscuous behaviour is common.

islamicvoice.com/february.99/zakir.htm

The simple answer is that for muslims, jews and some others God has forbidden it and so they dont do it.

cantspel · 23/03/2012 16:01

Hullygully · 23/03/2012 16:02

like most things it started out as a sensible healthful precaution at the time and hardened over time into dogma

candytuft63 · 23/03/2012 16:02

We were told that Pork/shellfish etc are not kosher (ie unclean) and therefore are not to be eaten is because in the Bible Lands it is hot and they are foods that are very dangerous to eat if they cannot be kept properly.

CreamolaFoamless · 23/03/2012 16:03

yes I have googled it CakeMixture on several occasions .

If your Christian I hope you're having fish for tea/dinner.

I'm simply questioning why?

X-Post. Sorry.

housedilemma · 23/03/2012 16:06

I think the fish on a friday is something to do with a tradition that fishermen would come in with fresh fish on a Friday. Therefore it's in the freshest condition.
