AIBU to think if the cut off point for child benefits was £100k then there would still be people here complaining and figuring out ways to still claim it??

cos I'm fed up reading of people saying they can't cope and should their dh get pain 49999.99 instead if 50k? or should they just lie on the forms?

I know its unfair in the aspect that its not based on household income, but 50k limit seems ok, people moaning just sound greedy

I called them again bamboo they just said that entitled to didn't always apply and they had to follow the rules. Think MP will have to be contacted again.

We get by by DH and I doing without and borrowing from my mum when it gets really bad but as an elderly pensioner she doesn't have much either.

We are in Scotland.

Northernlurker · 23/03/2012 20:48

I think I've pointed this out on this thread already but frankly I've lost track - so will repeat possibly - CB has been frozen by this government and is still frozen. When that freeze ends what do you think they'll be looking to do?
I agree with Starwisher. The degree to which some posters are attcking others over this issue is horrible - the 'enemy' is not other parents. It's the government who put child benefit on the political table having avoiding doing so during the election campaign.

McFluffster · 23/03/2012 20:48

We are one of the families who avoided losing it with the new guidelines so I should be pleased but I'm just not.

I don't think something so flawed and unfair being passed so easily is a good sign of things to come. It sets a standard and baked ideas being waved through on a whim are going to get us all into trouble.

McFluffster · 23/03/2012 20:49

*half baked. A bit like my post really!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 23/03/2012 20:50

Bamboo as I think I said upthread, I will be losing mine, so there is no 'what are they moaning about' from me. Will I miss it - yes. Do we need it, no.

Beth I'm sorry if I was harsh. I really don't see though, that it is up to the state to legislate where there is lack of communication within a marriage. Don't people talk about these things before they have children and before they give up paid employment?

mercibucket · 23/03/2012 20:53

Hecubasdaughter - how many children do you have? How much are your earnings if you are paying tax yet that amount also includes cb, ctc, hb?? Am horrified. Are you sure you are not entitled to more?

DamnBamboo · 23/03/2012 20:56

Never said you were moaning Ali I just found your response to Beth a little Hmm

plus3 · 23/03/2012 21:02

Anybody watching Sportrelief? Might put a few things in perspective.

Hecubasdaughter · 23/03/2012 21:04

I have 2. I earn £60 per week. We were turned down for CTC, then twice our appeal was turned down. They refuse to take our change of circumstance into account just reassure us we will have entitlement by the 2013 tax year if nothing changes.

McFluffster · 23/03/2012 21:07

Sport Relief... There is a Food Bank on my high street now.

mercibucket · 23/03/2012 21:08

Ah so is this a change of circumstance thing? Sorry to hear that - it is my nightmare - v v hard til you fall back 'into the system' - earned too much previously to qualify now etc but you still need to live 'now'
Hope you soon get all the ctc and other benefits

Hecubasdaughter · 23/03/2012 21:12

I think we will be bankrupt by April 2013 unless the job hunting works. Dh has had 2 replies and I have had 1 all rejections.

Dadof22 · 23/03/2012 21:27

The value of a salary varies greatly depending on where you are in the country, which is also part of the problem.

As is the relative difficulty and cost of public transport. For me it was much cheaper to drive to work, I only got a car because of this.
Realisticly how much choice do people have in where they live and work, particularly if you have children but also if you do not have many qualifications or experience etc. Lots of business relocate these days as well.

Some of the most recent anaylsis of average graduate vs non-graduate pay over a working lifetime has shown very little difference, ie. less the 10K over a 35-40 year period.

MrsHeffley · 23/03/2012 21:32

I agree somebody paying a stonking mortgage, high commuting bills for a shoe box in the SE is going to have the same in their pocket as somebody on far,far less in terms of salary.

This oh you earn £50K so you're not deserving of any sympathy is just nasty particularly when some may actually have little difference in disposable income after bills.

McFluffster · 23/03/2012 21:43

Agreed. We need to stick together, stop the benefit-bashing and bitching about the "squeezed middle" in the press. Divide and conquer and all that!

Hecubasdaughter · 23/03/2012 21:49

It is letting the government win. Let us all destroy each other (metaphorically speaking) and we don't have the energy to moan about what they do.

shewhowines · 23/03/2012 22:19

If you know what your income is, you choose your financial commitments based on that. Had people realised that CB would not be guaranteed then people would have bought smaller houses/cheaper area etc and as posters have said "cut their cloth" accordingly. To have the rug pulled out from under them AFTER their commitments is a shock and it is therefore NU to moan, especially if it is inherently unfair in the first place.

If the cuts affected household income equally then there would not be as much moaning. It would be deemed fairer and, I for one, would be happier to make hard cutbacks (the government need to do something) but why should I when the next door neighbours in a similar situation/household income don't have to?

happybubblebrain · 23/03/2012 22:27

I think the cut off should be much lower. Hmmm, let's say £26,000.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 24/03/2012 06:10

I think it shoud be restricted to maximum 2 or 3 children and ony those children who attend school in UK (or registered to be home ed).

ilikecandyandrunning · 24/03/2012 06:16

It's the sheer bloody stupid way they have assessed it that fucks me off!

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 24/03/2012 06:22

I agree..... It is gig to go tits up and be a benefit than can be abused ... Probably will cost as much to manage as it will save money.

BrandyAlexander · 24/03/2012 07:47

I think once the principle is accepted that not everyone is going to get CB future governments will progressively lower the limits.

MotherPanda · 24/03/2012 09:04

I wasn't trying to 'get at' people, just asking them to look at where there money goes and cut back -if you really needed that £2k a year of CB then you need to cut back your spending by 2k now it's gone.

Morloth · 24/03/2012 23:33

I think that if you want to dismantle the welfare state this is a very clever first move.

Start at the top and work down.

Very clever indeed.

sozzledchops · 24/03/2012 23:54

Not complaining about losing it, just complaining about another thread to kick the fucking higher tax payers and I haven't seen any who fall into that category claiming they can't afford to lose it.
