to worry about getting the tube across London late at night with my twelve year old?

am taking her to a concert at the Royal Albert Hall and our return trip will be a 30 min tube journey back to a mainline station late at night. (and I believe it's quite a long walk back to the tube station from the RAH).
AIBU to be a bit nervous about us being on our own, late at night, on the tube etc? Am half tempted to send her with her Dad, or am I being a wuss?

You will be fine. It will be v busy.
Enjoy!

BlingLoving · 22/03/2012 13:47

Well, you are being a little bit of a wuss. Grin

Which mainline station are you heading back to?

Firstly, most RAH stuff doesn't finish too late so you won't be wandering around trying to catch the last train or whatever. That should make it easier. Also, you'll be walking along in a crowd of other arty types who've also just come out of the theatre.

having said that, I'd rather wait with all those arty types and catch the bus back to the station if you're not that keen on the walk! The busses come along, evreyone piles on, it's fun actually!

It will be fine. I promise.

Impatientwino · 22/03/2012 13:48

If it's a concert there will be a gazillion other people walking back to the tube station from the RAH so you won't be on your own.

It's not unreasonable to be concerned about something you don't do regularly or be apprehensive but don't miss out on something if you will regret it later...

verytellytubby · 22/03/2012 13:48

Tube will be packed.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 22/03/2012 13:49

big wuss. It will be fine and busy.

kandinskysgirl · 22/03/2012 13:49

What time is late? I generally finish work at about 11pm and regularly get the tube then walk home and it is still quite busy and I never feel worried at all. In fact I forget its that time of the night and just read my kindle.

Also surely after the concert there will be lots of people heading that way.

What are you worrying about exactly?

ObiWan · 22/03/2012 13:50

It will be fine. I think South Ken. Station is very close to the Royal Albert Hall.

You will be surrounded by people taking the same route, and that area of London is really safe. The undergoround is pretty safe to travel on all the time, so are night buses in London.
At night, you're more likely to encounter loud drunken people on mainline trains in my experience.

Kitchentiles · 22/03/2012 13:56

You'll be in Central London, surrounded by people. Safe as houses.

Tell us what you are worried about and we'll try to help, I lived in London fir five years.

dinkystinkyandveryverybored · 22/03/2012 13:57

There will be hundreds of people coming out of the RAH at the end and all heading for buses/tubes - so they'll be busy. You'll be fine.

If you're going on Sunday I'm going to be one of the people coming out of the RAH so will loo out for you and your dd to make sure you're ok Wink

SparklyGothKat · 22/03/2012 14:00

It's always busy in london, loads of people will be about. I feel safer in london at night than I would walking in my own town.

ZZZenAgain · 22/03/2012 14:05

well there may be a lot of people about when you get on the tube but if you have a 30 minute tube journey, there may not be many people about as your journey progresses.

Hoebag · 22/03/2012 14:10

What are you worried about?

Firawla · 22/03/2012 14:11

I really wouldn't worry about that, it will be busy still as others have said. I don't understand any course for concern also thats a nice area very safe

SardineQueen · 22/03/2012 14:12

It will be fine. No problem at all, easy peasy.

What are your concerns?

SpringHeeledJack · 22/03/2012 14:12

what main line station are you going back to, lottie?

we always get the bus- to Victoria or Charing X. There's a bus stop right outside the RAH

emsyj · 22/03/2012 14:17

YABU. As SparklyGothCat says, I felt safer at night in London than I do anywhere else! It will be just as busy as it is in early afternoon. When we lived in London I regularly got public transport late at night and it was fine. There was a bus that ran 24 hours from Westminster to the end of my road that I got at various times of the night without any scary moments - and we're talking 3am after karaoke and drinks here. It was always very busy.

Mumsyblouse · 22/03/2012 14:20

It's a really busy area, plus really posh, so you should be fine, as everyone else will also be getting on buses/trains/walking to the tube. Plan your route, you may find as someone else has said that getting a bus to right outside a station is easier and most of the buses tell you when to get off these days (always my worry!)

QuintessentialShadows · 22/03/2012 14:24

You are in walking distance of either High st Ken or South Ken tubes. What station are you going to?

eurochick · 22/03/2012 14:32

You are being a big wuss. It will be busy, RAH is in a naice area. You will be absolutely fine.

Incidentally, when I was 12, I was taking myself around London on the tube (during the day) without any adult supervision.

Proudnscary · 22/03/2012 14:33

YABU, it'll be fine and I agree I feel perfectly safe in London at night. Just don't wave an iPad, Mulberry purse or £50 notes about and you'll be grand.

If it is something you are not used to I can understand that you might be nervous, but it will be absolutely fine. As others have said, there will be zillions of people walking in the same direction. The tube is used by all sorts of lovely people to get home.

I cannot however speak for the mainline station or your train journey home.

CarrieAnnRegardless · 22/03/2012 14:36

No need to worry about this at all. London is built on millions of residents and visitors doing just this.

Just make sure you have an Oyster card or return tube ticket, the queues for the ticket machines will be long. With many mainline train tickets you can get a tube ticket as part of the deal if you give the tube station as your final destination.

roguepixie · 22/03/2012 14:38

I used to work in an office just outside the RAH and would get the train to South Ken every day. It is a 10 minute walk at most - there is an underground tunnel for most of that way as well, if you prefer that.

If you are going to a concert it will be busy. No problem as far as I can see.

Enjoy the concert.

FootprintsInTheSnow · 22/03/2012 14:40

It's fine.
