Well, am I?

OP posts:

It is a good wage. Take home of 32k is a good wage.

I can't see how minimum wage plus credits would get near it to be honest.

Starwisher · 22/03/2012 15:49

Molly

42.5 k is £28956 to live off

Take off in our case, 3.5k ticket to work ( before dh lost job)

Minimum wage gets you £11300 to live off

Add on benefits, tax credits, free school meals and that's easily brings up to around £25k

What's so funny?

molly3478 · 22/03/2012 15:54

Me and dh both work for near minimum wage and betwepen us we dont get that we get no other benefits but tcs and even those are very small. i just dont see how it is possible as we both work but dont make that amount.

MariaFormosa · 22/03/2012 15:54

Maybe they don't ... but then do people earning £3125 per week need a tax CUT? Cos that's what they've just got ... poor loves, they were only just getting by on a measly £12,500 per month, children or no children - thank goodness nice Mr.Osborne has helped them out, what with the cost of petrol ... and yachts etc.

Starwisher · 22/03/2012 15:57

Ok apparently if we could get £23243 in benefits if we didn't have a mortgage

Imaging we also earned £11000 that's £34k to live off

We would actually be better off if we never had a house and just got minimum wage job

Starwisher · 22/03/2012 15:58

I have got the figure for entitled to by the way.

It's quite depressing

WorriedBetty · 22/03/2012 15:59

I have a friend who is on more than £150K a year, and he drives a 10 year old car, shops in charity shops, makes a loss on letting out his holiday home and rarely eats out for more than £20 a head. His shirts are frayed and his suits are more than 15 years old. HOW DARE YOU SAY HE HAS AN INCOME!

Hecubasdaughter · 22/03/2012 16:00

I have just done calculations. If we have no luck with job hunting in the next tax year we should have a total of 8054 to live on. That's earnings plus benefits inc CB. Can someone please explain how that makes us so much better off than someone earning 42K before tax. I don't understand how we could even be considered as being in the same ball park.

Before anyone says anything we do and always have worked hard.

molly3478 · 22/03/2012 16:00

I have no idea how that works then but as a dual income low wage household we definitely arent making those figures and getting no other benefits other than a small amount of tcs.

Hecubasdaughter · 22/03/2012 16:04

Dd isn't entitled to free school meals btw as we were turned down for CTC. Luckily we live in Scotland because we don't receive the 'correct' benefits so would have to pay for prescriptions. I would get them free atm as dd2 is still under 1.

molly3478 · 22/03/2012 16:04

I will also add we do 65 to 70 hours between us and still dont get that figure

Starwisher · 22/03/2012 16:05

Is that housing benefit included hecubas?

Starwisher · 22/03/2012 16:07

I calculated it on one income, 2 children and rent of £300 per week ( which is what we would pay if we rented this house )

molly3478 · 22/03/2012 16:09

I worked it out (you have made me curious now!) we get 24448 take home a year including tcs,cb and dhs 2000 pounds bonus.

Hecubasdaughter · 22/03/2012 16:10

Yes that is including HB.. It is my wages + HB+CtB+CB+ CBJSA which DH will only get until June.

Starwisher · 22/03/2012 16:13

So it molly not that much less than we had on 42.5 k

28k, but then the whopping train fare took it down to 25k to cover everything else

molly3478 · 22/03/2012 16:15

Thats with us both working though! And not including dhs massive petrol costs.

molly3478 · 22/03/2012 16:18

There is no way 1 person on minimum wage with benrfits can get more than me and dh both doing nearly full time each and him on 15k and if there is i am quitting my job Grin

Starwisher · 22/03/2012 16:18

Yes, I see your point but I'm trying to demonstrate that whilst it's not a pittance, it isn't that far off in reality what people on 12k might get overall once everything is factored in

Starwisher · 22/03/2012 16:19

You could always check on entitled to

The system is a mystery to me

Hecubasdaughter · 22/03/2012 16:21

Remember those on low wages have to pay to get to work too.

KalSkirata · 22/03/2012 16:24

'Again, it's only same amount income as those with minimum wage topped up with benefits' really starwisher? We are not far off min wage and the CTC and CB do not add up to even 20K. Wihch even with my bad maths is half 42K. And no, we dont get housing benefit cos we have a mortgage which we have to pay ourselves.
So quit claiming all the 'benefits' are like getting 42K. Thy are not.

KalSkirata · 22/03/2012 16:27

and we dont get free school meals either cos they dont cater for specialised diets. sheesh. What a bunch of nonsense.

BellaLugosiGhost · 22/03/2012 16:28

Molly I didn't say we had no money, like I said, we are not poor. But there is somewhere between poor and wealthy. We have enough that we can add to our savings each month but to be able to save we have to be careful with our spending. We don't go without anything but, as I said, we aren't wealthy.

Starwisher · 22/03/2012 16:28

Erm, there are several posts explaining why

I'm sure you just missed them Confused
