To think that the singular of Weetabix is not 'Weetabic'

doradaisy · 19/03/2012 13:31

My DtwinSs are in a creche and they love their Weetabix at break time.

Creche worker always give me an account of what they've eaten and tell me they had 'one weetabic each'. I always think to myself 'don't you mean one weetabix' but never say it.

Do I need to get a life?

hackmum · 19/03/2012 14:00

One Weetabix, two Weetabices is how it should go, I reckon.

Sparklingbrook · 19/03/2012 14:01

No weetabixes for me ta. They are horrid. Sad Oh, i have just understood the sex thing

AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/03/2012 14:02

The sex one reminds me of that poster on here that responded loudly to her DS in crowded public place "no more secs, you've had enough secs!" when her DS said "one more sec" Grin

OTheHugeManatee · 19/03/2012 14:02

hackmum - so multiple orgasms is seces? Shock

Thankgodforcaffeine · 19/03/2012 14:04

:o at "weetabic" and "twic"

CaoNiMa · 19/03/2012 14:04

The best thing about "Weetabix" is that it means "shit your pants" in Swedish.

Pascha · 19/03/2012 14:05

Isn't it like sheep though? 1 sheep 2 sheep = 1 weetabix 2 weetabix

crashdoll · 19/03/2012 14:05

Tom had one weetabix for breakfast but Dan had two weetabi for breakfast. Crashdoll had a banana because there wasn't enough milk for 2 weetabi let alone one. Sad

BareBums · 19/03/2012 14:06

That's brilliant Caonima Grin

Bonsoir · 19/03/2012 14:06

This is on of the main reasons why I find nursery care so distressing. How are children supposed to learn to talk properly if their carers are so vague about language?

CakeMixture · 19/03/2012 14:06

one/a weetabix
two weetabix

Not all words change when they become singular/plural.

I love the idea of 'one twic' though - :o

crashdoll · 19/03/2012 14:12

Perhaps the creche uses a cheapo brand called Weetabics and thus one of them really is simply a Weetabic.

Bonsoir · 19/03/2012 14:15

Weetabix is a brand name.

aftereight · 19/03/2012 14:16

Singular = Weetabix
Plural = Weetabi Grin

Mrskbpw · 19/03/2012 14:19

OtheHugeManatee - I HATE when people don't use 'text' like a verb. If you're going to use a noun as a verb, then use it properly. I don't understand why people have a problem with "text" when they don't with "phone". Presumably that was only a noun once upon a time. And what about google? Apparently that's easy enough to put in the past tense.

LemonEmmaP · 19/03/2012 14:21

I still twitch slightly at references to one dice, two dice etc - it's one die, two dice. I know what's right but I just can't bring myself to use it!

CoffeeBucks · 19/03/2012 14:36

From now on I am going to refer to multiple Weetabix as Weetabices Grin

crashdoll · 19/03/2012 14:40

I tell you what doesn't make sense in my sleep deprived brain.
I caught 1 fish and then I caught 2 fish. There are different types of fishes.

Renniehorta · 19/03/2012 14:42

This reminds me of the whole panini debate.
One panino
Two panini.
So 'I would like a panini' is wrong and 'I would like 2 paninis', is also wrong as it is a double plural. Akin to 'I would like 2 sandwicheses'.

As for Weetabix, a brand name and I think an uncountable. So
One Weetabix
Two Weetabix
defo!

handbagCrab · 19/03/2012 14:42

Shredded Wheat is the same isn't it? If you have more than one you don't say you're having Shredded Wheats. Or do you?

OTheHugeManatee · 19/03/2012 14:43

While we're on the subject of pedantry plurals used as singulars, can I just mention phenomena? One of them is a phenomenON FFS Hmm

bronze · 19/03/2012 14:49

May I just say, I love you MN

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 19/03/2012 15:12

The advert used to challenge people to eat 3 Shredded Wheat...not Wheats! (IIRC) I come from Shredded Wheat-ville.

shemademedoit · 19/03/2012 15:28

Wheetabix is a mass noun: one wheetabix, many wheetabix.
