To think it is sexist when men say "the wife"

I think it is but my OH says not because "my wife" implies ownership. I'm not sure now.

I don't know. It annoy me if DH called me 'the wife', I'd consider it disrespectful but I can't explain why.

OP, if you don't like it then ask him not to call you that.

Smellslikecatspee · 18/03/2012 17:35

I insist in being called THE BOSS. .

Even though we both know we're here to serve the cats

crashdoll · 18/03/2012 17:37

I prefer the wife to my wife as if you are the only wife in the world. Perhaps you are like the only wife in the world to him.

CheerfulYank · 18/03/2012 17:37

I kind of like "my wife." I am DH's wife. I say "my husband."

crashdoll · 18/03/2012 17:38

Well, I mean, I hope he doesn't have any other wives!!

threeleftfeet · 18/03/2012 17:41

Yes I can imagine it being sexist in certain contexts.

For example it could be less than respectful if there's an implication that your role as wife is more important than your actual identity.

Or that your identity outside of being a wife is unimportant, so unimportant as to be completely irrelevant - why would you need a name even? "the wife" will do as that's "all" you are!

Of course in reality it depends on the context. "The wife" could be a term used with fondness in a different situation, or simply descriptive as many other ways as other posters have described here.

But yes I can imagine how it could be sexist coming from an arsehole a certain type of person!

mayorquimby · 18/03/2012 17:41

eh.......Bruce is "The Boss" and only Bruce

ObviouslyOblivious · 18/03/2012 17:42

I see your 'wife', and I raise you 'the missus' grrrrrrrrr

threeleftfeet · 18/03/2012 17:44

You should try posting this in the feminism section too IMO.

sportsfanatic · 18/03/2012 17:44

It's just blokist, not sexist. And a million times better than when a woman refers to her DH by that ghastly term 'hubby', making him sound like a pet she keeps tucked up in a basket somewhere.

mayorquimby · 18/03/2012 17:44

I use "her indoors" or the "the moth" cause I'm such a bloody bloke.

mrsshears · 18/03/2012 17:45

oh with you on that one obviouslyoblivious i hate the missus with a passion!!

threeleftfeet · 18/03/2012 17:47

"It's just blokist, not sexist"

can you explain the difference please?

sportsfanatic · 18/03/2012 17:53

"It's just blokist, not sexist"

Big big difference.

Like a said....the male equivalent of women saying "hubby" i.e. like she keeps her DH in a basket under the table somewhere and lets him out for a pat occasionally.

I'm female, a life-long feminist BTW, in case you think I am a one of those pesky males Grin

ShellyBoobs · 18/03/2012 17:55

You should try posting this in the feminism section too IMO.

Yes because it's that important. Grin

sportsfanatic · 18/03/2012 17:57

I'll see you "the missus" and raise you "'er indoors" and "she who must be obeyed". Grin

troisgarcons · 18/03/2012 18:03

DH says he says "my wife" because he proud he's married to me. Grin

InPraiseOfBacchus · 18/03/2012 18:12

As a proud feminist... nope. In the cause of equality, there are far bigger fish to fry.

NowThenWreck · 18/03/2012 18:15

How about the Ball and Chain?

EllenParsons · 18/03/2012 18:24

I do find it a bit sexist and the phrase grates on me... you always hear men saying it along the lines of "the kids are the wife's department" or about cooking, cleaning etc "the wife" does that, the wife is letting me out with the lads tonight etc. Wouldn't be too impressed at being referred to like that myself!

DucketyDuckDuck · 18/03/2012 18:28

Our Lass is worse.

ChaoticAngel · 18/03/2012 18:30

I'm not married but I wouldn't like to be referred to as 'the wife' if I was, my wife is fine but not the former. To me it implies ownership. When talking about my dog I say 'the dog', unless I refer to her by her name, because I own her so I wouldn't want someone to call me 'the wife' iyswim.

Hopandaskip · 18/03/2012 18:31

eh, would have to work really hard to get my panties in a bunch over this one.

AngryBeaver · 18/03/2012 18:32

My dh and I were taking it in shifts to attend our nextdoor neighbours party. (no sitter)
My turn was up when I heard him shouting over the fence "Oi,wife!" ...quite made me giggle Smile

MatureUniStudent · 18/03/2012 18:41

The ex used to call me the "little woman" when talking about me to his equally dismissive father. I don't like the "My Gypsy Wedding" programme where Paddy calls her "woman" -
(when I worked part time - I was earning "pin money")
