to agree that fat coppers need to slim down

... or have their pay docked. Or something.

Rarely in agreement with government plans for anything, but now that over 50% of male policemen are apparently officially overweight, I think plans to encourage force them to lose weight are a very good thing.

How can they possibly chase and catch criminals (who are mostly young and fit and scared) if they're carrying extra poundage?

Want to add, interesting that smaller percentage of women coppers are fat, given that a higher percentage of females than males are overweight in the general population.

The thing with policing is everyone knows all about it from tv. It's really not like that, there is no canteen, there is no time sat drinking tea chatting, we've been cut to the b

Mrbojangles1 · 17/03/2012 18:56

Tiredtrout sorry but it shouldn't be if yu would like help it should be get fit or get out

Police
Army
Fire fighters
Ambulance crew

That fact yur saving lives, carrying very hear kit and also have collages lives in your hands in my view means you should all be fighting fit

I would hate to be trapped some were and the emergancey team could not reach me because they were to fat or to unfit

Tiredtrout · 17/03/2012 18:59

Fecking Phone, I meant bone! We don't have gym facilities at stations anymore, we don't have time to do our job in our working day, everyone o. My shift comes in early to do admin. we will not get time to do fitness training. Everyone I know is carrying pretty bad injuries. These fitness tests are being brought in to get rid of officers with alot Of time in to reduce payouts on pensions that we pay alot into

Mrbojangles1 · 17/03/2012 19:01

Ilove fluffy that fact remains I have seen with my own eyes a fatty policeman get overcome by some bloke and in my view it did look to me solely because he was to fat .

And wether they show the good bits or not the fact remains while the unfit coppers huff and puff trying to boot the door in the 19 year old was over the fence and over 9 gardens they then had to get the chopper out at what cost because the police man is to fat and unfit

If he was army fit hell if he was fireman fit he would of had that door off in no time at all

Tiredtrout · 17/03/2012 19:04

Mr bojangles I think you are missing the point I made, that is how they got the statistics! A bit underhand but that's how mr Winsor and dc has been throughout.

Also your point about it should only take one person to deal with a scrote, have you ever tried to deal with someone pissed, on drugs who has no pain threshold and is literally fighting for their life?

Mrbojangles1 · 17/03/2012 19:05

Exuses sorry fire men seem to get on just fine why do you need a gym to get fit

Their are bikes
You can jog
And swimming is pretty cheap (don't the force own some pools)
I am more than sure you have inter force foot ball teams and such

Don't need a gym in work to get fit
Also seeing less police eating mc ribs and my local drive trough might help Grin

Tiredtrout · 17/03/2012 19:07

Fire service has gyms in their stations. We do not have pools. You eat what you can get.

KateSpade · 17/03/2012 19:07

I agree, OP.

However, if this does ever get implemented, police will get free gym subscriptions, which i don't really agree with, but then you can't have one without the other..

I also agree about nurses, i was once told by a REALLY huge nurse, and i mean huge that i was over weight, which i was about a stone, but being told by someone with a good 6/7 stone to loose?

PleaseDeleteMeLetMeGo · 17/03/2012 19:08

the fire brigade has mandatory fitness testing

No, they don't. They are re-introducing if like in the police force but they don't currently have regular fitness tests. They have BA and 'hot wear' testing that simulate fireground conditions.

Mrbojangles1 · 17/03/2012 19:08

Tiredtrout agreed if their just to wild but not if the officer is just to fat

And in my view often it's the latter some policeman with a red face and his gut hanging out cannot not in view take on a 19 year scrot

You need to be fit and fat and trim carry 4 stone more than people who are well motivated to get away from you is not on

Your job is to keep law and order how can one do that if one can barley bend down to tie their own shoes

Some police are very very overweight and if I were a crook I would take my chance because I would no tha fatty would not be able to catch me

Mrbojangles1 · 17/03/2012 19:14

I also think medical staff who are hugely overweight is a bit :(
Espically when their job is to get others to live a healthy life style

MelodyPondering · 17/03/2012 19:15

Fat Fuckers?

Nice...

ivykaty44 · 17/03/2012 19:24

all of you that are saying fitness has nothing to do with weight.

Can I ask the difference between a person with 25% body fat and a person with 40 % body fat running a half marathon?

The one with 40% body will put more strain on their internal organs than the person with 25% body fat and although they may both complete the run and the slimmer person maybe slower - the one with more fat will put more stress on their bodies organs and there is a higher chance of something going wrong.

Just because a fat person can run and dance doesn't mean they are healthy - yes they can be fit, but it is not the same thing and if they lost the fat they would put less stress on their body.

Mrbojangles1 · 17/03/2012 19:25

Sorry but 1% of police are morbidly obese I mean I don't want to be worried my rescuer might have a heart attack on me

Police get paid very well their starting slarey is higher than other emergancey services the least they can do is keep fit

The bottom line is if they want to keep hold of their jobs they will get fit

Is also about keeping them displined part of the fitness in the army is about displine and I think the police could do with some fitness helps with more than just the body

PleaseDeleteMeLetMeGo · 17/03/2012 19:26

But not all extra weight is fat ivykaty. A person with good muscle mass can weigh heavy but be fit - as in the rubgy player analogy.

Chirpychick2010 · 17/03/2012 19:29

I whole heartedly agree!!! How on earth is a fat lump going to catch a youth legging it down the street??? Most stations have there own gym for them to use. I think they should have their fitness tested once a year and keep to the standard of entry fitness level, after all what justification can they give to make people have to have entry level fitness then allow to fall once joined cant see how that makes sense??

Mrbojangles1 · 17/03/2012 19:32

I think we can tell the difference between somone with a big muscle build and somone who just eats too much

I seen police with big bellys, shirt almost poping and the kit almost floating it's so faraway way from their body and arms sort of resting on their sides and thinking god hope no one try's to run form him today that poor bugger will end up in a&e with hear issues

I have also seen police who a big and tall and you can see they are built like a shit brick house and no fucker will get the best of them

MelodyPondering · 17/03/2012 19:35

Ha! Most stations have their own gyms?

Not where my dh works. This is just another way of trying to get rid of police officers. What they will do is get rid of the older ones that have the most experience.

I also agree with when are they supposed to do it?

My dh is hardly ever here as it is. He Is about 3 stone overweight and is a bloody fantastic police officer.

I really object to "fat Fuckers" too, have you got any idea how hard they work? Fucking cheek.

PleaseDeleteMeLetMeGo · 17/03/2012 19:38

I agree but lets hope they treat those two examples accordingly mrbojangles and not just an arbitary - 'your BMI is too high, you're fired'.

I don't disagree with the principal. I'm concerned about the methods they'll use and the underlying aims conveniently hidden behind H&S and duty of care.

Tiredtrout · 17/03/2012 19:38

Mr bojangles you have such a lovely turn of phrase! I think with your made up statistics you may well have been reading too much of the daily mail.

This government are trying desperately and appear to be succeeding in turning people against the public sector while encouraging us to fight amongst ourselves.

Hopandaskip · 17/03/2012 19:43

"Just because a fat person can run and dance doesn't mean they are healthy"

Just because a slim person is slim doesn't mean they are able to run and dance.

Maybe we should fire people if they smoke, develop a chronic disease, get older etc etc.

Can they do the job, are they fit enough to do whatever their particular job entails (not the whole category of job, their particular one)? If someone is a police dispatcher do they need to be able to do a 100m sprint?

Mrbojangles1 · 17/03/2012 19:44

Sorry but it's not the govermnet I have always thought police were to fat, also the firmen near me look a bit chubby

Somthing I have have wondered about for years

Grag · 17/03/2012 19:46

I used to work in a fish and chip shop and policemen and women always used to come in, every day it seemed like. They need to change their ways.

Mrbojangles1 · 17/03/2012 19:47

Hopandaskip oh Is a nurse and the staff ( oh is a non smoker btw) are banned from smoking on hospital grounds constant moaning from the staff when it came in but I totally agree

And FYI I work for ss and would not have been took on if I smoked or was overweight.

If I became overweight or started smoking I would be de registered

Chirpychick2010 · 17/03/2012 19:52

If their on the street they are there to catch ie chase run whatever the scum bags! If they are not fit enough to do that then they beed to be put in a position that best suits there experience I'm not suggesting they should be sacked or they lack experience! But they need to be fit for purpose not just to protect us but also them self. Plus no one is saying that skinny people are fitter or healthier cuz if you think the above you must be blinkered! Most stations have gyms but i didn't say all!!!! I know what a hard job and may i say good job most do!
